Welcome to Chemistry Please sign in by your child’s name at the tables in the back of the room Survey for Second Period • Please complete the survey to help us get feedback on how we are doing as a school. • Surveys are completed electronically • Computers are available this evening in the library Who is Mr. Nguyen? • I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry • I hold two credentials to teach in California, which includes: – Chemistry – Biology • My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 2 Why Chemistry? • Chemistry is a perfect class for students who have successfully completed Biology and Algebra 1. • Chemistry requires students to use their algebra skills to explain the behavior of atoms & molecules. The Common Core (CCSS) Implications in the Science Classroom: • Integration of Literacy – Student practice using academic vocabulary through listening, speaking, reading, and writing • Focus on Application – Can students apply concepts to solve a novel problem? – Inquiry Driven Instruction Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Implications: • Focus on Depth of Knowledge • Application of Content knowledge • Inquiry Driven Instruction (students learn through discovery) • Student-centered learning Chemistry Curriculum • The entire year, we are going to be looking at how changes in the structure of an atom or molecule causes everything to happen in the world around us. First, we learn how an atom of an element is arranged. We use the periodic table to help us. • Then we discus how atoms combine to form different types of molecules • Luego discusión cómo los átomos se combinan para formar diferentes tipos de moléculas. Chemistry Curriculum • Finally, we look at how different molecules will behave in different situations. • By May, we will have studied bonding, solutions, gases, reaction types & rates, organic & biochemistry, equilibrium, and the movement of heat. Grades Tests (los examenes) Labs & Projects (Laboratorios y proyectos) Assignments (las tarea) Final (el examen final) Quizzes Participation (Participación) 40% 20% 10% 10% 15% 5% A: 88 – 100% B: 76 – 87% C: 65 – 75% D: 55-64% F: 54% • All Chemistry teachers at La Serna have the same grading policy. Our Chemistry Book •All students have a Chemistry book at home. Suggested Materials: • Bring Scientific Calculator Every Day! • Highlighter • Different Colored Pens • Textbook can stay at home Assignments • There are assignments given almost daily. I stamp completed work. • I will collect all homework on the day we take our test. • Because I allow students 2-3 weeks to make up work, I will not accept late homework packets. Homework Policy • Homework is due at the beginning of the class period on the date due to be considered “on time”. • No late work will be accepted after chapter or unit tests have been given or after a prolonged amount of time. Make-up Work: • It is the student’s responsibility to obtain any assignments missed during an absence. – Make-up Homework – Make-up Exams/Quizzes – Make-up Labs Consequences Negative Consequences 1. Verbal Warning 2. Student-teacher conference. A teleparent may be sent home. 3. Student will be sent to viewpoint. Letter will be sent home to be signed by parent/guardian. Failure to bring back signed letter will learn a referral to Dean of Students. 4. The student will be sent to viewpoint. Student-teacherparent conference with counselor. 5. Possible removal from the class. Tardy Policy 1st and 2nd Tardy – Student will receive a warning. 3rd Tardy –Parent will be informed via a phone call home and student receives “N” 4th Tardy –Parent will be informed via a phone call home, student receives “U”, and assigned a detention 5th Tardy –Will result in a referral and possible drop * Any tardy after the conference may result in the student being dropped from the class. What is Tutorial? • During 1st half of lunch • A quiet place for students to work • One-on-one Teacher assistance • Opportunity to get work done How is 1 hour Lunch Earned? • GPA 2.6 with 1 D—NO F’s • GPA 2.0 NO D’s or F’s • Grading Periods every 5 weeks Thank you for attending back to school night. I look forward to working with you and your student this year! Suggestions for Parents… • Check to see if work (hw/cw) was done • Check your child’s stamp sheet. • Ask them what they learned about in each class. • Listen to the entire Teleparent message. • DO NOT accept excuses for failure. • E-mail Teachers for feedback • Acknowledge their successes! Quick Reminders • Teleparent – Quick automated recording – Child’s Home Language • Parent Portal – Handout can be picked up in Guidance Office – M-F (7:30am – 4PM) or Saturday (8-12PM) What if I have questions? • The best way to reach me is by email: johnl.nguyen@wuhsd.org • Or you may call me at 562-698-8121 extension 6260 • Many questions can be answered by information on my website: http://www.wuhsd.org//Domain/881
