The Revista de Estudios Sociales of the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) invites the academic community to
submit articles for issue 61 (July-September 2017), the theme of which is “Between the Local and the Global: Spaces
and Interaction in New Approaches in the Social Sciences.”

Texts will be accepted in English, Spanish and Portuguese. For the different types of collaboration, authors must

Objetive of this Call for Papers
There has been an ever-increasing sensitivity in different areas of the social sciences with respect to problems that
transcend the nation as the “natural” unit of analysis. It is as though a series of topics have begun to be approached
from a transnational or even a global perspective, dealing with phenomena that extend beyond the borders of the
national and entail interconnections or interdependence between spaces that are influenced mutually, albeit not
symmetrically. Examples of this are phenomena associated with mass culture, cross-border relations, migrations, and
the circulation of ideas, knowledge, persons and objects. At the same time, discussions about spatiality have been
enriched by studies of realities that could be denominated sub-national. Thus, the study of communities and regions
immersed in national realities have also complicated the use of the national as a category of analysis. In fact, a series of
recent political changes in Latin America has tended to raise serious questions regarding homogeneous visions of the
nation, and to recognize diversity as a positive value. Furthermore, the growing sensitivity to local problems has
contributed to increasing levels of conflict with national governments and transnational initiatives.
This call for articles has arisen as a result of the developments described above, and its aim is to enliven the reflection
on different Latin American spaces and social realities that are shaped through the interactions among actors present in
different spatialities. Ultimately, the objective of the dossier is to discuss the limits and possibilities that the nationstate, as a preponderant spatial unit of analysis, offers to the social sciences today.
