THE GREAT SWINDLE
Colombian contemporary artist, Santiago Montoya is internationally
recognized for his meticulous paintings and sculptures which utilize found
objects. Over the years Santiago Montoya has deepened and refined his
creative pursuits, producing thought provoking works that spark discussions
about the role of money, art, politics and power.
“In his series “The Great Swindle” Montoya utilizes paper money as his
canvas. Historically, the world has relied on money as a means of exchange,
expecting it to equate with value and to safely store wealth. He uses banknotes, stamps and coupons in scrupulously
arranged formats, often in pairs or series, underlining the symmetry of his layouts in contrast to the skewed asymmetry
of today’s fragile and very risky financial system. He frequently chooses notes originating in the USA and Peoples’
Republic of China, exploring the political and cultural polarities between the world’s two leading power blocks.” A
keen sense of humor is ever present, where image, words and ideas bring forth Montoya’s powerful and very
