Dear Family,
During the next few weeks, our math class will be learning about integers.
Integers are positive and negative numbers and 0. You can expect to
see work with adding and subtracting integers, comparing integers, and
ordering integers from least to greatest and greatest to least.
Here are some examples you may use to give some help if needed.
Adding and Subtracting Integers
You can use a number line to show addition and subtraction with
integers. The first number in the equation shows where to begin
on the line.
• To add a positive number, move right. The number line below
shows that ⫺2 ⫹ (⫹5) ⫽ ⫹3.

• To add a negative number, move left.
Subtraction is the inverse of addition. Move in the opposite
direction to subtract.
• To subtract a positive number, move left. The number line below
shows that ⫺2 ⫺ (⫹3) ⫽ ⫺5.

y el 0. Su hijo(a) llevará al hogar ejercicios para sumar y restar enteros,
comparar enteros y ordenar enteros de menor a mayor y de mayor a
menor.
Use los siguientes ejemplos para ayudar a su hijo(a), si es necesario.
Suma y resta de enteros
Para mostrar la suma y la resta con enteros, puede usar una recta
numérica. El primer número de la ecuación indica en qué lugar de
la recta se debe comenzar.
• Para sumar un número positivo, hay que ir hacia la derecha. La
recta numérica siguiente muestra que ⫺2 ⫹ (⫹5) ⫽ ⫹3.

• Para sumar un número negativo, hay que avanzar hacia la
izquierda.
La resta es la operación inversa de la suma. Para restar hay que
