Mexico’s capital city, where street food is widespread and emblematic, provides an appropriate setting in which to gather specialists from all over the world involved in the study of this phenomenon. DESCRIPTION Street food is a topic of interest among scholars, planners and policy makers throughout the world, both because of its growing importance as a global social phenomenon, as well as the diversity of forms that it takes in different localities. The proliferation of street food and its implications for social, economic, health, juridical and urban phenomena require thorough analysis and discussion. The practice of eating in the streets brings together interest in a complex array of topics, from health and food safety, to tourism and food heritage. Street food can be observed as a major urban issue, but also as an emergent space that promotes human conviviality. Contemporary street foods include new global gastronomic trends at the same time that they can be observed as a mean to preserve traditional cuisines. With these considerations in mind, the purpose of this conference is to create an open space of dialogue and exchange on the subject of street food, as an important contemporary social, economic and political phenomenon. The organizers invite papers which describe, analyze, contextualize, and explain issues related to street food in contemporary society, under the following topics: Cultural Practices of Street Food Social and cultural aspects of street food Consumption practices and events.
