Sights to See in Panama Naturally, no trip to Panama would be complete without a visit to its famous canal, but there’s much more to see and do in this small nation than that. The capital city has a number of interesting sites and attractions (see separate entry). Isla Taboga, just twelve miles south of Panama City, is home to a lovely beach, verdant protected rain forest, and one of the largest brown pelican colonies in Latin America. Settled even before the capital city, Isla Taboga has a small church that is said to be the secondoldest in the Western Hemisphere. Also, the famous conquistador Francisco Pizarro set sail from Isla Taboga, bound for Peru, in 1524. Those wanting an alpine retreat instead would do well to investigate Boquete, a small town located in a craggy mountain valley not far from Volcán Barú. Known for its refreshing climate and pristine environment, Boquete is the place to go for outdoor activities such as walking, horseback riding, and birdwatching.
