Land Com., nos. 138, 166. "The Potrero, also called La Familia Sagrada was sold by Torre to apt. Cooper in Oct. 1829, at which time the adjoining ranchos Moro Cojo and Bolsa Nueva were owned by simeon Castro and Francisco Soto respectively. Vallejo, Doc. Hist. Cal., MS xxix 428: ... "Ranchos granted before 1830 "Monterey District...Potrero (or Familia Sagradda) to Torre in 1822. . . Moro Cojo, to Castro (regrant 1844), 1825." ... [Apparently from a study of various references regarding theses grants, there must have been a tract of land Memo (long note) lying on both sides of the "Tembladera" which was known as Moro Cojo. The fact that part of this land went to Torre and part to Castro and the name ha attached itself to the names of both Torre's and Castro's ranchos [the latter was grantee of Bolsa Nueva y Moro Cojo, #245] has caused some confusion especially with Bancroft, who does not refer to Torre as receving a grant of Moro Cojo, although he does state that the Legislative Record of 1830 combined Potrero with Moro Cojo, and that with Moro Cojo, and that Torre sold a rancho of that name to Cooper. However, the fact that the Legislative records combined the names of Potrero and Moro Cojo should not have been taken to mean that the rancho had not always been known by that name. Hoover points out that in his petition to Gov. Solá, dated June 20, 1822, Torre asked for a tract of land on which he had been keeping his livestock and which was known as the Bolsa del Potrero y Moro Cojo. So it is apparent that Torre's grant included at least part of the tract known as Moro Cojo and reference in Bancroft to Castro's grant of the same name refers to other land, probably land south of the Tembladera slough.
