Relevant sentences and important information
Plants are living things. They have the following characteristics:
• They need water, air, sunlight and minerals.
• They make their own food.
• They form seeds to reproduce.
• They can’t move by themselves, but they react to the environment.
They have these main parts: roots, stem, leaves and flowers.
Las plantas son seres vivos. Tienen las siguientes características.
• Necesitan agua, aire, luz solar y minerales
• Necesitan hacer su propio alimento.
• Ellas crean semillas para reproducirse.
• No se pueden mover por si mismas, pero pueden reaccionar ante el medio amiente.
• Tienen todas estas partes principales: raíces, tallo, hojas y flores.
The roots, stems and leaves of plants vary depending on the type of plant and its
environment.
Las raíces, tallos y hojas de las plantas varían dependiendo del tipo de planta y de su medio
ambiente.
• Woody stems are hard and rigid, for example, the stem of an oak tree.
• Green stems are soft and flexible, for example, the stem of wheat.

Some plants have flowers. The flowers contain the male and female reproductive
organs, corolla and calyx. Seeds form inside the flower. The fruit forms around the
seeds.
Algunas plantas tienen flores. Las flores contienen los órganos reproductores masculinos y
femeninos, la corola y el cáliz. Las semillas se forman dentro de la flor. Las frutas nacen
alrededor de las semillas.
There are many different types of plants. According to its type of stem, a plant can
be: a tree, a bush or a grass.
Hay muchos tipos diferentes de plantas. De acuerdo a su tipo de tallos las plantas pueden
ser: árboles, arbustos o hierbas.
Since ancient times, we have used plants as food. We have also used wood from trees
as fuel, for building and to make paper.
Desde tiempos antiguos, hemos usado las plantas para la alimentación. También hemos usado
la madera para combustible, para la construcción y para hacer papel.
