Revenues grew 2% to reach 56.400 million Euros, while exports increased by 3,6% to stand at 32.000 million Euros. The number of employees working in the chemical industry grew by more than 6% in 2014 and currently creates 540,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs Madrid, 31 March, 2015 –According to national accounting system data, the gross value added of the Spanish Chemical Industry (CNAE 20 and 21) reached 15.691 million Euros in 2013, representing 12.4% of the total added value from manufacturing industry. This data places Chemical Industry as the second largest industrial sector for its contribution to GDP, above the metallurgical sector (11,5%) and transport and automobiles (11,1%), and only behind food industry. Press Release Revenues grew 2% to reach 56.400 million Euros, supported by exports Sales by the Spanish chemical sector totalled €56,386 million in 2014, a rise of 2% over 2013 and 13.4% since 2007 – the year that the crisis began– compared to a 24% contraction in sales recorded by Spain’s combined industrial sectors. By subsector, sales have not changed significantly, with Pharmaceutical specialities still the most important segment, contributing 21.7% of the total, closely followed by Plastic and rubber raw materials, which contributes 20.5% of sales, Organic chemistry (12.6%), Other consumer products (8.3%), Paints and dies (7%), Perfumes and cosmetics (6.9%), Detergents and cleaning products (6.5%), Pharmaceutical raw materials (4.8%), Gases (2.7%), Inorganic (2.7%), Agrochemicals (1.6%), Colorants (1.3%) and Fibres (0.5%). Although exports continued to be the main vector for growth in 2014, as in previous years they were not the only contributing factor thanks to the start of a recovery in domestic consumption and demand, which helped to boost production of consumer chemicals at the end of the year. Meanwhile, imports grew by 1.1% to €35,110 million in 2014, meaning that the trade balance coverage rose to 91%, nearly 20 points higher than in 2007. Social contribution: Generating wealth and quality employment The chemical sector, which has proven to be one of the Spanish economy’s most consolidated industrial sectors, helps to create wealth by contributing more than €12,000 million in taxes and wages every year. It has also been one of the leading sectors for employment creation during the last year. According to the most recent figures in the Active Population Survey published by the National Statistics Institute, the chemical sector created 10,100 new jobs during the last 12 months, directly employing 174,400 people in 2014 (annual average) compared to 164,300 in 2013. This is equivalent to growth of 6.1%, compared to a 2.53% increase in the national employment rate during the last 12 months (annual variation) according to the latest published data. It is also quality employment, with permanent contracts accounting for 95% of the sector, compared to an average of 85% for the industrial sector as a whole and a national average of 77%. Key figures for the Spanish Chemical Industry The Spanish chemical sector, which consists of more than 3,100 companies –of which 96% are SMEs– currently generates 540,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs. In addition to strong export capabilities, its competitiveness also lies in its capacity for innovation and technology, accounting for 24% of all R&D+i investments made by Spanish industry as a whole and employing 21% of all research personnel in industrial companies. These characteristics make it a strategic, competitive and international sector.
