The conference will be held at the San Rafael Convention Center (http://www.congresos.mendoza.gov.ar/SanRafael/indexsanrafael.htm) 2. IMPORTANT DEADLINES - Deadline for session proposals: June 30, 2013. - Deadline for advanced registration (discount rate): March 31, 2014. - Call for abstracts of oral and poster presentations: deadline for thematic sessions: March 31, 2014; deadline for general session: April 30, 2014. There is no official language but there is also no simultaneous translation. For further information, please write to: info@icaz2014argentina.com Except under special circumstances, information will be sent by e-mail and will be available in the ICAZ Newsletter, ICAZ website and in the ICAZ 2014 website www.icaz2014argentina.com 3. MAIN SCIENTIFIC AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE The main objectives of the conference are to: - promote archaeozoology as an increasingly important contribution to both prehistoric and historical archaeology and to the history of biodiversity; - strengthen interactions between archaeozoologists from all continents, in particular those who find themselves in situations of partial isolation; the 2014 conference will in particular focus in giving voice and generating closer links with archaeozoologists based in Latin American countries; - present new methodologies in archaeozoology and discuss their benefits and limitations when applied to diverse faunal assemblages; - promote interactions between archaeozoologists and scientists from other disciplines to contribute to the development of new lines of research that help to improve our understanding of the complex relationship between humans and animals. 4. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SESSION ORGANIZERS Session organizers will be responsible for inviting session participants and for all communications with participants. 4.1. Rules Session organizers are invited to choose a specific topic within the diverse range of archaeozoology studies. 1st step, deadline June 30, 2013: proposed session organizers should contact the ICAZ- 2014 organizing committee as soon as possible, no later than the end of June 2013, with a written session proposal (10 to 20 lines) and a list of potential participants. 2nd step, deadline September 30, 2013: with help of the scientific committee of the conference, the organizing committee will examine the session proposals, and, if necessary and after discussion with the session organizer, will split or combine some of them in order to adapt the general program both to the main aims and to the timetable of the Conference. 3rd step, deadline March 31, 2014: it will be the responsibility of the session organizers to sort out speakers’ abstracts, scheduling, etc. and to provide the ICAZ-2014 organizing committee with a "session pack". It must include: 1) Name and full contact details of session organizer/s 2) Name and full contact details of proposed chair/s 3) The following details for each contribution/participant Name of first author Institutional address Telephone E-mail address The participants’ role (Organizer, Chair, Presenter, Discussant, etc.) Names and addresses of additional authors Five keywords Full title of submission Abstract (up to 250 words excluding title, authors; abstracts should be sent directly to the session organizer who will be in charge of collecting them) 5.) A session program which lists the order of presentations. Paper titles and abstracts will be in the language used to deliver the paper. Each speaker will have a 20-minute slot (15 minutes for the paper and 5 minutes for questions). The session organizers will encourage speakers to provide visual aids (PowerPoint) for their presentations that can be easily read and understood, even from some distance. It is essential that the session organizer keeps in regular contact with the participants in the session. To enable switching between sessions, concurrent sessions will start and finish at the same time. Therefore, papers must always occur as scheduled. If scheduled speakers do not attend, there will be a 20-minute break. All coffee/tea and lunch breaks will occur at the same time. The committee will assist with and monitor progress. 4.2. Recommendations In the ICAZ-2014 conference we want to emphasize the importance of the integration of Archaeozoology with the rest of archaeology and to encourage the exchange of information and ideas between researchers working in different regions and periods. It is for this reason that we strongly encourage sessions organized around a common theme, which can be tackled from a variety of viewpoints (geographical and chronological). We would also like all sessions to be truly international with a wide participation of speakers coming from different countries and possibly continents. The participation of speakers who are not archaeozoologists (archaeologists, historians, botanists, biologists, biogeography specialists, etc.) who can provide important scientific contributions is also encouraged. All sessions will be organized in two-hour blocks, with five speakers per block. Consequently, sessions could be formatted for: one-quarter day (two hours), halfday (four hours plus a coffee break), three quarters of a day (half-day + coffee break + two hours), a full day (two half days + two coffee break). Proposals for half-day sessions are encouraged, whereas session proposals with more than 20 presentations will be discouraged or split into several different sessions. The number of papers given by a single individual in the same session will be limited to one (this includes introductory or discussant papers). If at least one of the papers is co-authored, this limit can be increased to two. We will encourage and help session organizers to find funding for their own sessions. If you need any help or a letter of support, etc. from the organizing committee and/or the ICAZ executive committee, don't hesitate to ask. Regarding problems or questions, please get in touch preferably by email (info@icaz2014argentina.com). Many thanks for your support for ICAZ-2014!
