Discovering Genuine Relationships
A Preview Of Our Conference Keynoters
On Being Different: Who We Are, What We Need and What We Teach
A psychologist from Philadelphia, Daniel Gottlieb, Ph.D.’s interest lies in creating compassionate
communities. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees at Temple University. Shortly
thereafter he was the director of several substance abuse programs in Philadelphia and
maintained a private practice. Since 1985 he has been hosting “Voices in the Family” a psychology
call-in show on Philadelphia’s NPR affiliate. In 1995, he began writing a weekly column for the
Philadelphia Inquirer titled “On Healing.” He continued that until last year. Now he is a contributor
to the Huffington Post. He is the author of four books including: “Voices in the Family,” “Letters to
Sam,” “The Wisdom of Sam” and “Learning from the Heart.” In his books Daniel shares lessons
on love, loss and the gifts of life. As an adult living with disability, he and his grandson, Sam,
diagnosed with autism, share what they have learned from one another about what it means to
be part of a family and a community.
Labels Are For Cans
A comedian and self advocate, Michael Beers’ comedy is insightful and good-natured, leaving
his audience with a new perspective on life. He started off performing small gigs at open micnights in Missoula, Montana, and then graduated to more “glamorous” gigs (as he calls them)
playing at family reunions and retirement homes. A large portion of Michael’s act is based on his
own life growing up in Montana with his mother, three sisters, their dogs and his disability. He
also ventures into some social and political commentary. A delegate and staff member of the
Montana Youth Leadership Forum, Michael also works part-time as a peer advocate for Summit
Independent Living Center in Missoula, Montana.
Safe And Supportive Schools: Creating Environments Where Everyone Can Learn
Kevin Jennings is an educator, author and administrator. He serves as assistant deputy
secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools at the U.S. Department of Education.
Jennings holds degrees from Harvard University, Columbia University’s Teachers College and
the Stern School of Business at New York University. He founded the Gay, Lesbian and Straight
Education Network (GLSEN), which seeks to end discrimination, harassment and bullying.
Jennings has authored six books, including one that won the “Lambda Literary Award.” His
interest reaches beyond typical safety measures by aiming to provide school environments that
are also safe emotionally. He advocates for not only removing guns and drugs from schools but
also for actively eliminating bullying. Kevin will share his personal story about the importance of
his mother’s support in surviving and thriving during his own school experiences.

4, 5, 7 and 10 of the Credential of Competency for
Special Education Instructional Paraprofessionals in
PA.
The Institute is part of the two-day PEAL conference,

About Mary Beth Doyle, Ph.D., Saint Michael’s
College, Vermont
Mary Beth’s primary work is in teacher preparation. She supports
undergraduate and graduate students to teach in inclusive
classroom communities where all students are valued and
respected. Mary Beth has a particular interest in supporting preservice and inservice teachers in designing rich and interesting
curriculum for students with severe disabilities. Mary Beth has
spent the last 15 years learning and teaching about effective
ways to support paraprofessionals as part of educational teams.

Un sicólogo de Filadelfia, el interés de Daniel Gottlieb, Ph.D. se encuentra en la creación de
comunidades compasivas. Él recibió títulos de grado y posgrado de la Universidad de Temple.
Poco después fue director de varios programas de abuso de sustancias en Filadelfia y mantiene

School districts are responsible for providing parent training.
§ 300.34 Related services.
(a) General. Related services means transportation and such
developmental, corrective, and other supportive services as
are required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from
special education... Related services also include school health
services and school nurse services, social work services in
schools, and parent counseling and training.
2. Ask your Local Task Force
If you are a member of your LTF, you could ask the IU or IU
representative for reimbursement for your expenses so you
can bring back valuable information to your LTF membership
that may benefit other parent members.
3. Ask your Independent Support Coordinator from the County
Office of Intellectual Disabilities/Mental Retardation.
4. Ask DPW-Bureau of Autism Services
DPW Bureau of Autism Services recently announced minigrants, and they will begin to accept applications on February
18, 2011. Consider using mini-grant for the PEAL Conference
(or for other purposes you may have been saving for.)
5. Take a Tax Deduction for PEAL Conference expenses
Parents of children with disabilities may be able to use PEAL
Conference expenses as a medical deduction on your 2011
tax return. Refer to Exceptional Parent Magazine’s annual tax
preparation issue or consult a tax specialist.

PEAL PARTICIPATES IN THE
TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE
The PEAL Center is one of eight parent centers chosen to participate in
the Technology Leadership Initiative (TLI) funded by the Office of Special
Education Programs. The model will teach parent centers to use technology
to better serve parents and families.
The PEAL team began its work on the pilot project with a one-day January
workshop. The workshop provided an overview of strategic technology
planning, giving PEAL encouragement in starting this project.
The TLI training was part of the Technical Assistance for Parent Centers
ALLIANCE conference, held January 25-27, in Crystal City, Virginia. PEAL
Center staff members Liz Healey, Ceil Belasco, Stephanie Tecza and Rose
Huber attended training sessions on leadership, behavior and technology.
Ceil gave the keynote for the Technology Institute on making a training video
and presented two workshops on webinars.

El equipo de PEAL empezó en el proyecto piloto con un taller en Enero de un
día. El taller proporcionó un panorama general de la planificación estratégica
tecnológica, dando aliento a PEAL en el inicio de este proyecto.
El entrenamiento TLI fue parte de la Asistencia Técnica para la conferencia de
ALIANZA de Centros de Padres, que se llevó a cabo el 25 al 27 de Enero en
Crystal City, Virginia. Miembros del personal del Centro de PEAL, Liz Healey, Ceil
Belasco, Stephanie Tecza y Rose Huber, asistieron sesiones de entrenamientos

e-newsletter, “The BLAST Zone.”
This space will provide readers
with up-to-date information about
news, events and featured stories
regarding the PEAL Center and
other organizations throughout
Pennsylvania. Special features
of the new site include: a searchby-county option, a calendar of
events and commenting options.
Agencies and groups can also
submit information on the site,
and that information will be
published statewide.
