Dear Family,
Your child is learning to use integers and other rational numbers to solve
problems. A part of this is learning the meanings of integers and how to
compare and order these numbers. You can help your child understand the
concept of negative integers by playing the following game.
What Integer Am I?
Draw a number line on a large sheet of paper.

Step 1 Player 1 places a token on a negative number on the number line.
Step 2 Player 2 says, “What is my name?” “What is my opposite?” and
“How many units am I away from 0?”
Step 3 Player 1 then gives the name of the integer, its opposite, and
tells its distance from 0.
Step 4 Trade roles and play again.
Observe Your Child
Focus on Math Practice 5:
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Help your child become proficient with Math Practice 5. After drawing
the number line, ask your child where he or she might have seen or used
a number line before. Suggest a thermometer or football field if your
child has trouble coming up with an idea.

Trace una recta numérica en una hoja grande de papel.

Paso 1 El Jugador 1 coloca una ficha en un número negativo en la
recta numérica.
Paso 2 El Jugador 2 dice: “¿Cómo me llamo?”, “¿Cuál es mi
opuesto?” y “¿A cuántas unidades me encuentro del 0?”
Paso 3 El Jugador 1 da el nombre del entero y de su opuesto, y dice a
qué distancia se encuentra del 0.
Paso 4 Intercambien papeles y jueguen otra vez.
Aquí hay un ejemplo:
Jugador 1: Coloca una ficha en 23.
Jugador 2: “¿Cómo me llamo? ¿Cuál es mi opuesto? ¿A cuántas
unidades me encuentro del 0?”
Jugador 1: “3 negativo, 3 positivo, 3 unidades del 0”
