Child Learns
In The
Middle
A child learns about being in the middle at an early age. Experiences finding the
middle and looking for patterns support your child’s understanding of dividing
quantities, odd and even numbers and problem solving.
What your child will do
Problem solve to find the middle.
What you need
• Dice (use more than one die for 2nd – 5th grade)
• Chair cards or small chairs
• Doll
What you do
1. Mary Middles always wants to be able to sit exactly in the middle at the movies.
2. Roll the dice to find out how many chairs are in the row.
3. Count the dots on the dice and place that many chairs in a row.
4. Check to see if there is a middle seat for Mary.
Questions to ask
How can you find out if the rows have a seat exactly in the middle? Which rows will
work? What do you notice about the number of seats in the row that will work? What
do you notice about the number of seats that will not work? How many chairs are on
either side of Mary? When is it good to be in the middle? When would you rather not
be in the middle?
For parents
Some children struggle with math and math concepts. This game will teach a math
concept like even and odd numbers in a fun non-threatening way. As you play the
game he will realize that the rows with the even numbers like 2, 4, and 6 do not have a
middle and the rows with 3, 5, and 7 do.
