ACTIONS TO PREVENT CONTRACTING
WEST NILE VIRUS
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a serious health threat for
people. WNV is a mosquito-borne virus that was first
documented on the East Coast of the US in 1999. The
virus has now spread to the Pacific Coast. WNV can
affect people of all ages; however, persons over the age
of 50 are more likely to suffer from the disease.
The virus is back again this season. It has been
detected in Los Angeles County circulating in the bird
populations and mosquitoes. We have the ability to
reduce the risk of disease transmission by following
some of the simple tips below.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT WNV?
The easiest and best way to avoid WNV is to prevent mosquito bites.
• Many mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. Be sure to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves
and pants at these times or consider staying indoors during these hours.
• Make sure you have good screens on your windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
• Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flowerpots, buckets and barrels. Drill
holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when not
in use.
HOW DOES WEST NILE VIRUS SPREAD?
Most often, WNV is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes are WNV carriers that become
infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread WNV to humans and other
animals when they bite. WNV is not spread through touching.
HOW SOON DO INFECTED PEOPLE GET SICK?
People typically develop symptoms between three and 14 days after the infected mosquito bites them.
Infection with WNV can be asymptomatic (no symptoms), or can be characterized by a high fever, body aches,
headaches and sometimes swollen lymph glands and rash.
WHAT IS THE RISK OF GETTING SICK FROM WNV?
People over the age of 50 are more likely to develop serious symptoms of WNV.

PASOS A TOMAR PARA NO CONTRAER EL VIRUS
DEL NILO OCCIDENTAL
El Virus del Nilo Occidental (WNV por sus siglas en
inglés) es una amenaza seria para la salud de las
personas. El WNV es un virus transmitido por los
mosquitos infectados lo cual fue documentado por
primera vez en la Costa Este de los Estados Unidos en
1999. Ahora el virus se ha propagado a la Costa del
Pacífico. El WNV puede afectar a las personas de todas
las edades; sin embargo, las personas mayores de 50 años
están más propensas a ser afectadas por esta enfermedad.
El virus está de nuevo aquí esta temporada. Este ha
sido detectado en el Condado de Los Angeles circulando entre la población de aves y de mosquitos. Nosotros
tenemos la habilidad de reducir el riesgo de transmitir la enfermedad siguiendo algunos de los consejos a
continuación:
¿QUE PUEDO HACER PARA NO CONTRAER EL WNV?
La mejor y más fácil manera de evitar el WNV es prevenir las picaduras de los mosquitos.

macetas, baldes o barriles. Perfore los columpios de goma para extraer el agua. Mantenga las piscinas inflables
de niños vacías y dobladas cuando no estén en uso.
¿COMO SE PROPAGA EL VIRUS DEL NILO OCCIDENTAL?
Casi siempre, el WNV se propaga a través de una picadura de un mosquito infectado. Los mosquitos son
portadores de WNV que se infectan cuando se alimentan de aves infectadas. Los mosquitos infectados pueden
propagar el WNV a los humanos y a otros animales cuando los pican. El WNV no se propaga al tocar a alguien.
¿CUANTO TIEMPO DURA EN QUE UNA PERSONA INFECTADA SE ENFERME?
Típicamente las personas desarrollan síntomas entre tres a 14 días después de que el mosquito infectado las haya
picado.
¿CUAL ES EL RIESGO DE ENFERMARSE POR EL WNV?
Las personas mayores de 50 años están más propensas a desarrollar síntomas graves por el WNV si llegasen a
enfermarse y deben tomar precauciones especiales para prevenir picaduras de mosquitos.
