En enero ya os comentaba: “algo extraordinario está ocurriendo

This March starts strongly, since the ADD is being
celebrated in Miami, between days 5 and 9, we will
see what is going on there.
In January and I said: “Something extraordinary is happening
in the new year 2010” would be something to see the new MPX
Cynosure Elite. I say that your friend MPX has been presented

Cynosure presenta su primera plataforma láser Elite
MPX, un sistema concebido para una puesta a punto
integral, gracias a las dos longitudes de onda de su
tecnología MultiplexTM que, tanto individualmente
como combinadas, permite realizar multitud de
tratamientos médicos.
Elite MPX combina las mejores longitudes de
onda (Alejandrita de 755 nm y Nd: YAG de 1064
nm), dando lugar a la tecnología más potente del
mercado para realizar tratamientos vasculares, de
depilación láser, de eliminación de manchas y de
rejuvenecimiento.
Elite MPX incorpora un software muy innovador
desarrollado por Microsoft, operativo mediante un
Windows intuitivo y completamente táctil, que lo
convierte en un equipo muy sencillo de utilizar.
Elite MPX cuenta también con el nuevo y más
potente equipo de frío SmartCool, de forma integrada, en
lugar de tener otro aparato. De este modo, se requiere menor
espacio y también menor tiempo para cada

Elite MPX combines the best wavelength (755 nm

market’s most powerful technology for vascular
treatments, laser hair removal, pigmentations
removal and rejuvenation.
Elite MPX incorporates a highly innovative

operating through a completely intuitive and

Elite MPX also has the new, more powerful
cooling equipment SmartCool, in an integrated,

The variety of parameters one can adjust to tailor treatment to
the patient’s unique skin profile is fairly extensive, Dr. Bernstein
further explained. “With Elite MPX you can titrate the maximum
fluences you wish
to use, adjust the

and choose
continuous pulse
or single pulse
repetition rates.
You can also
decide which
wavelength to
deliver first, or
you can use either
wavelength by

the most popular and lucrative indications to treat with Elite

laser converts oxy-hemoglobin to methemoglobin in the
targeted blood vessel to increase the absorption of the 1064 nm
Nd:YAG wavelength by 300% to 500%, for optimized results. The

wavelength blending system which fires one wavelength then
the other, in sequence. It offers a substantial range of settings
to manage delivery of energy from the 755 nm and 1064 nm
wavelengths and control over which wavelength fires first.
This technology has already proven useful for veins where the
shorter wavelength changes the chromophore to optimize
treatment by the longer wavelength, with cooling between
multiplexed pulses.

Dr. Tanghetti – Ultimately, it is very practical. Elite MPX gives us
two important wavelengths in a single platform; that alone is a
value.Moreover, the 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG
wavelengths represent the extremes; you have alexandrite
for lighter skinned patients and Nd:YAG for darker skin. These
wavelengths aren’t ideally suited for too many people. However,
most patients could use a combination of the two, depending

in the range of III to V. We can observe hair stimulation not just
at the treatment site but peripherally and outside the treatment
site. In attempting to eliminate hair stimulation we’ve tried a
variety of options including utilizing different wavelengths,
pulse durations and other treatment parameters, but we haven’t
come up with a consistent solution yet. The MPX mode of
coupling alexandrite with Nd:YAG might be the “holy grail” we
are looking for in treating this difficult condition.
What skin types do you see / treat on a regular basis in your
practice?
Dr. Battle – In Washington D.C. we see all skin types, a full range
of ethnicities and skin colors, people of various backgrounds
from all over the world. In my practice about 75% of my patient
base is skin of color.We perform a wide variety of cosmetic and
laser treatments for various indications in these patients with
great success. The more ammunition I have, the more options I
have to choose from. I feel I have a distinct advantage with this
technology at my disposal.
Dr. Kulkin – In my Georgia-based practice we see a lot of ethnic
skin types, but I treat patients from all over the world, so I see
a very broad spectrum of skin colors and ethnicity blends. It’s
interesting to see how differently various people respond to
treatment based on their lineage. With Elite MPX we have the
advantage of MultiPlex mode.
Dr. Bernstein – Being in a suburb of Philadelphia, I have a very
mixed demographic so I treat all skin types. It’s fairly evenly
distributed.
Dr. Tanghetti – I’m in California so I see all skin types in my
practice. I treat a wide spectrum of black, Hispanic, East Indian
and many mixed-race individuals.
What, if any, are the special challenges involved when treating
skin types IV to VI for hair removal, skin rejuvenation, vascular
or pigmented lesions, or any other indication Elite MPX might
treat? How might MPX address these issues?
Dr. Battle – We’ve come a long way with being able to safely
and effectively treat skin of color. Color is just one factor
to consider. Ethnicity and genetic factors play a big role as
well. Some patients with darker skin seem to tolerate shorter
wavelengths better than others, for example. For hair removal,
the tools we currently have are effective at treating coarse, dark
hair in patients with skin of color. We still need better tools to
effectively treat thinner and lighter hair, but by the fourth or
fifth treatment all hair, regardless of how coarse it was originally,
has become thinner and lighter. The Nd:YAG laser needs a
pigmented, coarse target to be most effective; when hair is
lighter or thinner we lose efficacy.

By blending in a little alexandrite we may be able to attack that
target more effectively and improve efficacy over an individual’s

Also, recent studies have shown that by safely preheating the
skin we may be able to treat more effectively, so adding the
alexandrite laser before might also
promote these results and allow use
of less energy. We must be protective
and conservative as we investigate this
device and perform research in treating
skin of color with the alexandrite. The
alexandrite wavelength loves pigment,
and if we use too high of fluence we
can create unwanted side effects. There
is a fluence level at which skin of color
can safely tolerate the alexandrite
wavelength. If we can find the proper
dosages, Elite MPX will make it possible
to add low fluence alexandrite to the
gold standard Nd:YAG wavelength.
Jump starting with the alexandrite and
following up with traditional Nd:YAG
ANTES
might create some very effective results.

For skin rejuvenation the microsecond
Nd:YAG mode is a very safe and effective
way to perform skin treatment on darker
skin. The Elite MPX allows us to treat with
these parameters. I don’t treat vascular
lesions with lasers in skin of color. For
pigmented lesions I use microsecond
Nd:YAG, fractional and KTP lasers with
spot sizes smaller than the actual lesion
to minimize the chance of affecting the
surrounding skin.
In the microsecond Nd:YAG mode I
can gradually lighten dark spots, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation,
melasma and dark patches.

begs the question: if you turn to the 1064 nm wavelength to
treat darker skin and avoid melanin, how is the melanin in
the hair going to be targeted while at the same time avoiding
melanin in the epidermis? This seems like a paradox on the
surface, but in hair, melanin is packaged differently than it is in
skin; it’s arranged differently and more densely packed in the
hair shaft than in the
epidermis. The 1064 nm wavelength targets melanin in hair
while melanin in skin is less affected. Seemingly there’s a
paradoxical benefit of using 1064 for hair in darker skin types
because the laser energy will still be absorbed sufficiently by the
hair shaft.
Dr. Kulkin – I’ve done more than 30,000 procedures on ethnic
skin types without problems. We see mixed ethnicities every
day, and we might be able to tell a lot about a person’s ethnic
background by watching how their hair on a particular body
part responds to the Nd:YAG laser, for example. Skin is different
between individuals and body parts at different times of the
year. The YAG is safer for darker skin. In lighter skin the Nd:YAG
doesn’t get the job done, despite being FDA approved for lighter
skin. Since the alexandrite is so good at destroying hair, it’s
advantageous to harness that power for everyone in some way.
What does the ability to treat darker skin types bring to the table
in the current landscape of aesthetic medicine, especially in the
face of the recent economic downturn?
Dr. Bernstein – There’s no denying that expanding your patient
base is a great way to survive bad times. You want the ability to

populations in the U.S., maybe 30% to 35% are Caucasian and
the rest other ethnicities. Darker skinned people have hair
issues, too, and it can only benefit us to be able to treat them
successfully. Economic downturn or not, hair removal remains a
popular indication.
Unwanted hair is important to a lot of people, especially women.
For many it’s a convenience issue as well as an aesthetic issue.
Now, we have one device that allows us to treat darker skin, as
well as lighter skin, which was not easily achievable before.

Dr. Battle – I recently came across a survey that showed
that during the recession, the only segment of the patient
population in aesthetic medicine that actually grew was patients
with skin of color. Focusing primarily on this segment in ways
some other practices may not have been able to, has made my
practice recession-proof.
This population sees the same commercials, reads the same
magazines, and wants the same treatment opportunities.
Patients of color who seek out these services are either turned
away because the practice cannot treat them, or they receive
substandard or even unsafe treatment. In almost every major
city in the U.S., the skin of color population is the majority and
will only become more so.
Dr. Kulkin –We definitely have to realize that the landscape has
certainly changed in the country over the past fifteen to twenty
years. We are clearly a global population and the demand for
laser procedures for people with ethnic or darker skin continues
to escalate. Having a laser that allows us to meet the needs
of this varied population and developing expertise with the
wavelengths to meet the unique demands of this diverse patient
base is critical and serves us well every day.
What other advantages do you feel the Elite MPX brings to a
practice? How might the other features of the device make Elite
MPX more attractive to physicians?
Dr. Bernstein – I am impressed by the science and engineering
that went into this device. They had to answer some difficult
questions to make this work. Cynosure did a great job of
integrating the air cooling and making a fairly complex device
easy-to-use. It’s the kind of thing one might not appreciate
if they haven’t had experience with older generation laser
technology.
Dr. Kulkin – Overall I think you can treat more rapidly with Elite
MPX, which is a huge advantage. By combining a variety of spot
sizes, integrated air cooling, and a variety of pulse widths at
great speed, especially with single-wavelength use, I can do a
back in 30 minutes or legs in 30 to 45 minutes. The device is very
efficient.
From a design point of view, it’s critical to have the cooling unit
built in. Air cooling is consistent and persistent throughout
treatment, not just before the pulse as with contact cooling.
I also like the Windows XP interface which will allow for even
better service from remote locations.
Dr. Tanghetti – The graphical user interface is very sophisticated
and allows us to control a wide variety of parameters, but is in
fact very easy-to-use. Also, it’s Windows-based, so there’s a lot of
room for expansion as Cynosure continues to develop new and
interesting add-ons for the platform. It would be premature of
me to speculate about that further, of course, but it’s definitely a
plus. Cooling is essential to many laser treatments, so having the
integrated air cooling is helpful as well.
What do you see in the future for Elite MPX?
Dr. Bernstein – I think that in the future we’ll see just how many
ways MultiPlex technology can be used. This technology is
obviously very useful but it really hasn’t been around long, so as
we move forward more of its capabilities will become apparent.

to deliver 10 Hz, which is very fast. Some physicians use that for
skin rejuvenation, but in my experience and based on patient
feedback, it’s a top treatment for rosacea when compared
to anything else out there. The sky’s the limit.
Dr. Battle – We must learn how to tailor each treatment to the
uniqueness of the patient. Variety among skin types is extensive;
this is true amongst patients of color as well as Caucasians. We
are finding that ethnic and genetic background plays a much
larger role in the way skin reacts to
treatment than just the skin color we see.
In the future, we as a community will be
taking into account skin type, ethnicity,
scar and tanning history, as well as a
variety of other genetic and physical
factors.We’re going to have to learn how
to customize treatment based on these
factors at some point, and having a
device like Elite MPX at our disposal will
help us do that.

Pregunta: ¿Desde cuándo viene utilizando el láser?
Mi experiencia con el láser data del último curso de mi carrera
de medicina,1982, cuando trabajábamos conjuntamente con el
Prof. Zaragoza Rubira en la cátedra de Medicina Física de Sevilla.
Ahí fue dónde realicé mi tesis de licenciatura sobre la utilización
del láser de Argon para el tratamiento de lesiones vasculares.
En este trabajo colaboraron también los doctores Antonio
Brualla y Montserrat Serra, pioneros en España en la utilización
de éste y otros tipos de láser en la Clínica Tres Torres de
Barcelona. De ahí en 1983, comencé en mi propia clínica con la
utilización del láser médico
P: ¿qué tratamientos realizaba con él al comienzo?
El primer láser quirúrgico que tuvimos a disposición en
nuestra clínica fue el láser de CO2 de 25w de potencia, con
él fundamentalmente lo que hacíamos era eliminar lesiones
benignas en la piel y mejora de cicatrices, etc
P: ¿Qué tipos de láser ha venido utilizando? ¿cuáles? ¿para qué
tratamientos?
A partir de ahí realicé un master universitario intereuropeo
en láser, en colaboración con las universidades de Lille, Nancy
y Barcelona entre otras, asistiendo a numerosos cursos con
el Dr. Mario Trelles y a diversos congresos en USA y Europa,
completando así una amplia formación en láser médicoquirúrgico. De ahí comenzamos con la utilización del láser
de CO2 para la realización de blefaroplastia, frecuentemente
transconguntival e incorporamos también Diodo Light-Sheer,
para depilación.

Question: How long have you been using the laser?
My experience with the laser data of the final year of my
career in medicine, 1982, when we worked together with
Prof. Zaragoza Rubira in the chair of Physical Medicine of
Seville.
That’s where I did my thesis on the use of the Argon laser
for treatment of vascular lesions.
The doctors Montserrat Serra and Antonio Brualla Antonio,
pioneer in Spain in the use of this and other types of lasers
in the Clinica Tres Torres in Barcelona.
Hence in 1983, I started my own clinic with the use of
medical lasers
Q: What kind of treatments did you perform with it?
The first surgical laser we had available in our clinic was the
CO2 laser power of 25W, with it basically what we did was to
remove benign skin lesions and improvement of scars, etc.
Q: What types of lasers have been used and for what kind of
treatments?
From there I did a intereuropean master degree in
collaboration with the University of Lille, Nancy and
Barcelona among others, attending numerous courses
with Dr. Mario Trelles and various conferences in USA and
Europe, completing a comprehensive training medicalsurgical laser. Hence we begin with the use of CO2 laser
to perform blepharoplasty, and often also incorporate
transconguntival and we included Light Sheer Diode for
hair removal.

P: ¿Cuáles utiliza en la actualidad?¿para qué tratamientos?
Actualmente y desde hace ya 10 años, desde la inauguración del
Centro Láser Quirúrgico Europeo y las nuevas instalaciones de
Clínica Serres, utilizamos además de los ya mencionados láser
de colorante pulsado para lesiones vasculares, láser Cynosure
de alejandrita para depilación, Affirm para rejuvenecimiento
facial, Neodimio-Yag para el tratamiento de varices, NeodimioYag de diferente pulso para rejuvenecimiento facial, Alejandrita
Q-Switch para lesiones pigmentarias y tatuajes.
Desde hace un año y medio, y a raíz de nuestro viaje a USA,
con el Dr. Barry di Bernardo, pionero mundial en lásder lipólisis,
estamos utilizando el Smart-Lipo MPX para la realización de láser
lipólisis, siendo ésto una verdadera revolución en el tratamiento
de zonas que, antes del láser y por
sus características, eran de difícil
tratamiento, sirva de ejemplo la cara
interna de los muslos, de los brazos, la
papada, donde ademá de eliminar la
grasa y con este método, se consigue
una mejora importante en la flacidez
de los tejidos y la retracción de la piel.
P: ¿Que ventajas encuentra en el
láser en comparación con otras
técnicas terapéuticas como depilación
convencional, esclerosis, peelings…?
El láser es actualmente un arma
insustituible en el arsenal médico,
mejorando cualquier tipo de
tratamiento que pueda ser realizado
por otros métodos, a la vez que trata
patologías que únicamente pueden ser
tratadas por láser, como un ejemplo, la
utilización de los láseres de colorante
pulsado, para lesiones vasculares
faciales, depilación láser o tratamiento
de eliminación de tatuajes sin cicatriz

Q: What do you use today? What treatments for?
Today and 10 years since the inauguration of the European
Surgical Laser Center and new installations of Serres Clinic,
we use besides those already mentioned pulsed dye laser
for vascular lesions, alexandrite laser for hair removal
Cynosure, Affirm for facial rejuvenation Neodymium-YAG
laser to treat varicose veins, Neodymium-Yag pulse for
different facial rejuvenation, Alexandrite Q-Switch for
pigmented lesions and tattoos.
For a year and a half, and following our trip to the USA,
with Dr. Barry di Bernardo, world pioneer in lásd lipolysis,
we are using the Smart-Lipo MPX to perform laserlipolysis,
this remains a veritable revolution to treat areas that
before laser were difficult to treat,
serve as an example the inside of
the thighs, arms, jowls, where in
addition to eliminating fat and with
this method, you get a significant
improvement in sagging of the
tissues and skin retraction.
Q: What advantages are in
the laser in comparison with
other conventional therapeutic
techniques including hair removal,
sclerosis, peelings ...?
The laser is now an irreplaceable
weapon in the medical arsenal,
improving any type of treatment
that can be done through other
methods, while only about diseases
that can be treated by laser, as
an example, the use of dye lasers

Por supuesto, en rejuvenecimiento facial es bueno combinar

Sí, en el caso de tratamiento de microvarices y varices en las
piernas, creemos que es mejor combinar conjuntamente con la

El láser a diferencia de otras técnicas, obtiene siempre unos
resultados fácilmente reproductibles.
P: ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de los láser?

Aporta fiabilidad de resultados, precisión en el tratamiento,

ha evolucionado la tecnología
láser hasta la actualidad?
La evolución ha sido progresiva,
antiguamente los primeros
aparatos eran muy costosos,
con un mantenimiento casi
insostenible económicamente, de
dimensiones desorbitadas, averias
frecuentes, etc. Progresivamente
han ido evolucionando y
corrigiendo todos estos defectos
que presentaban en su origen.
Q: Do you combine laser treatments? What improvements does
it bring?
Of course, in facial rejuvenation is a good mix of different

how laser technology has
evolved to date?
The evolution has been
gradual, once the first devices
were very expensive, with an
almost unbearable economic
maintenance of exorbitant
size, frequent breakdowns,
and so on. Gradually they have
evolved and correcting these
defects.

P: ¿Qué le gustaría poder tratar con láser que a día de hoy que
todavía no es posible?
Me gustaría poder complacer a los pacientes que vienen a
mejorar sus cicatrices o a realizarse nuevas intervenciones
quirúrgicas que piensan que el láser es un haz de luz mágico,
que puede cortar, cose, borrar, sin dejar ningún tipo de señal.
Q: What would you like to be treated with laser today that is
still not possible?
I wish I could please the patients who come to improve
their scars or surgeries performed further believe that the
laser is a magic beam that can cut, sew, delete, without
leaving any kind of signal.
P: ¿Como le gustaría que fueran los laseres en el futuro?
Me gustaría que permitiesen tratar todo tipo de patologías
a ser posible utilizando un menor número de sesiones y
prácticamente sin mantenimiento.
Q: How would you like lasers in the future?
I would like to afford to treat a range of conditions to be
possible using a smaller number of sessions and virtually
maintenance free.
P: Comente, por favor, qué le sugeriría a los médicos que se
inician en esta tecnología
Yo le sugeriría que se introduzcan en la tecnología láser que
no es sólo el tratamiento con unos pocos aparatos, sino todo
un mundo tecnológico que actualmente tenemos a nuestra
disposición y del cual podemos obtener unos resultados
insospechados. Eso sí es muy importante que para ello reciban
una formación adecuada que les permita utilizar éstos equipos
con la mayor seguridad y los mejores resultados para el
paciente.
Q: Could you comment please, which you suggest that
doctors who are new to this technology
I would suggest entering the laser technology is not
only treatment with a few devices, but a whole world of
technology we currently have at our disposal and we can
get some unexpected results. Now that’s very important
that it receive adequate training to enable them to use
these computers in the safest and best outcome for the
patient.

Everything you need to know about…laser tattoo removal
How does laser tattoo removal work?
¿Cómo trabaja el láser para la eliminación del
tatuaje?
Most people know about laser hair removal is a
very different procedure. In laser hair removal we
burn the hair in the follicle whereas in laser tattoo
removal you’re actually shattering the ink molecule
so your immune system can attack it and then the
body disposes of it naturally.
La mayoría de la gente sabe acerca de la depilación
láser es un procedimiento muy diferente. En la
depilación láser que quema el pelo en el folículo,
mientras que en la eliminación de tatuajes con láser
en realidad estás rompiendo la molécula de tinta
para que el sistema inmunológico pueda atacar y
luego el cuerpo lo elimina de forma natural.
Cuando tienes un tatuaje no tiene una reacción
alérgica porque las moléculas de tinta son
demasiado grandes - el sistema inmunológico no
sabe qué hacer con ellos lo ignora. Sin embargo, si
rompes las moléculas con el láser que se reducen a
un tamaño en que el sistema inmune puede actuar
sobre ellos.

When you have a tattoo you don’t have an allergic
reaction because the ink molecules are too big the immune system doesn’t know what to do with
them so ignores them. However if we smash the
molecules with the laser they are broken down to a
size where the immune system can deal with them.
There are two different types of lasers used in
tattoo removal.

El láser YAG-1064 se utiliza para eliminar las tintas azul y negra,
a continuación, el láser YAG-532 se utiliza para eliminar las tintas

de tratamiento?
El tratamiento láser se traducirá en una ampolla y se tiene que
dejarla sanar. También depende de la agresividad con que están
tratando el tatuaje. Clínicas diferentes tienen diferentes reglas
sobre la diferencia entre las citas. Nuestra política es que si usted
no está tratando con demasiada agresividad, entonces debería
dejar un período de seis semanas entre los tratamientos que dan
a la piel un montón de tiempo para sanar.

The Yag- 1064 is used to remove blue
and black inks then the Yag- 532 is used
to remove coloured inks. We remove the
coloured inks first because the skin swells up
and we use the other laser on it and then we
use the other laser as it doesn’t cause the skin
How many treatments are required?
It depends on what the patient wants, from just a cover up or
to have a tattoo completely faded out, but it would usually take
from two to twelve treatments. Also it depends on the ink used,
the depth of tattoo, how old it is and the amount of layers of ink
which has been tattooed.
Is there any recovery time needed between treatment sessions?
The laser treatment will result in a blister and you have to leave
the blister to heal. It also depends on how aggressively you
are treating the tattoo. Different clinics have different rules on
the gap between appointments. Our policy is that if you aren’t
treating too aggressively then you should leave a six week
window between treatments which give the skin plenty of time
to heal.

Personas de piel oscura no son adecuados
para la eliminación de tatuajes. Evaluamos
la piel de las personas en la escala de
Fitzpatrick. El tipo de piel se clasifican de uno
a seis sobre la base de la piel, los ojos y el
color de pelo.
Uno a cuatro se clasifican como de piel
blanca y cuatro a seis oscuro / pieles étnicas.
Cualquier persona que tenga más de cuatro

¿Existen efectos adversos al tratamiento?

Líneas eléctricas para uso de láseres
Algo tan cotidiano como un enchufe para alimentar
aparatos eléctricos es a la vez algo más complicado
que a veces no se le da la consideración que
requiere. Tanto o más importante que el voltaje que
nos entrega el enchufe es la potencia que consume
el aparato que vamos a conectar a él. Asímismo,
es importante el tamaño de la línea eléctrica que
conduce la electricidad desde nuestro cuadro
general de interruptores hasta nuestro aparato una
vez conectado. Veamos como se relacionan todos
estos coonceptos.
Voltaje, corriente y potencia

son dos parámetros que están muy relacionados.
Podemos definir el voltaje como la capacidad que tiene la línea
eléctrica de entregar potencia a una carga y la corriente es la
cantidad de carga eléctrica que circula por un camino eléctrico
cerrado. Pongamos un ejemplo más cotidiano; supongamos una
bomba de agua a la que le conectamos su entrada y su salida
por medio de un tubo. Al ponerla en marcha, el agua que haya
en su interior circula a una determinada velocidad. Ese valor
sería el equivalente a la corriente, es decir, los litros por minuto
que es capaz de hacer circular la bomba. Por otra parte, la
presión que es capaz de generar la bomba en el interior del tubo
sería el equivalente al voltaje eléctrico.
Para simplificar, diremos la potencia eléctrica consumida es el
producto del voltaje de la línea multiplicado por la corriente
que circula por un circuito determinado. Dado que el voltaje
de nuestras líneas eléctricas es aproximadamente constante,
que un equipo consuma más o menos potencia implica
necesariamente que circula más o menos corriente por su
interior.

o aumentamos el diámetro del tubo que
lleva el agua. En nuestro caso, el voltaje de
la línea es algo que no podemos modificar
a nuestro antojo, por lo tanto, en el caso
de que necesitemos alimentar un equipo
con un alto consumo de potencia, se nos
hace necesario el uso de líneas eléctricas
de mayor capacidad, es decir, líneas eléctricas de
un diámetro elevado. Si observamos la instalación
eléctrica de nuestra casa, veremos que, en caso
de disponer de un horno eléctrico, el cable que
lo alimenta es de un diámetro mayor que el del
resto de cables. Esto se debe a que un horno
eléctrico es un dispositivo de elevado consumo
eléctrico en comparación con lo que suele ser
normal en una casa, es decir, hace circular por
él una alta corriente. Asímismo, si observamos
el cable general de la casa, veremos que tiene
un diámetro mayor que todos los demás. Esto
se debe a que ese cable es el que conduce toda
la corriente que circula por la casa. La corriente soportada por
un conductor eléctrico es mayor cuanto mayor es su diámetro.
Existe, según normativa eléctrica, una tabla donde se detalla
esta relación.
Consecuencias de un exceso de corriente
James Prescot Joule (1818-1889) postuló el conocido como
efecto Joule. Una corriente eléctrica circulando por un
conductor disipa parte de la energía que transporta en forma
de calor. Este efecto se aprovecha en multitud de equipo de
calentamiento eléctrico: estufas, calentadores de agua, etc.
Esta clase de equipos está diseñada para hacer circular por su
interior una corriente conocida y soportada por el parato, de
forma que no resulta perjudicial. El problema surge cuando
hacemmos circular por un conductor una corriente que genera
un calor superior al que el conductor puede disipar. En este
caso, una línea eléctrica puede llegar a arder literalmente como
una mecha. Este sería lo que podría ocurrir si, por ejemplo,
intentásemos hacer funcionar una estufa de 2000W usando un
cable de menos de 1,5mm2 de sección. Por favor, no lo intenten.
Dispositivos de protección
Muchas veces, hemos oído en noticias que la causa del incendio
en un hogar ha sido un cortocircuito. Un cortocircuito es el paso
de una altísima corriente por un conductor. Si la instalación
eléctrica no está provista de dispositivos de protección contra
cortocircuitos, llamados interruptores magnetotérmicos, es
muy facil que se produzca este efecto. Estos interruptores se
encargan de cerrar el paso de corriente eléctrica en el caso
de que el valor de dicha corriente exceda del valor para el
que están preparados. De esta forma, teniendo en cuenta el

Por otra parte, para proteger a las personas de descargas
accidentales, se usan unos dispositivos llamados interruptores
diferenciales. Estos dispositivos cortan el paso de corriente
eléctrica si la carcasa exterior de un aparato entra en contacto
con alguna parte interna que tenga un voltaje superior a unos
pocos voltios, que sería suficiente para producir daños a las
personas. Existen dispositivos de varias sensibilidades, siendo la
más usual la de 30 miliamperios.
En resumen…
De cara a usar un equipo de laser de alto consumo eléctrico, lo
usual es utilizar magnetotérmicos de 25A o 32A curva D, con
conductores de 6 mm2 de sección y interruptores diferenciales
de 40A y 30mA de sensibilidad. También es importante la
toma de corriente, que debe ser adecuada a estos valores. Los
enchufes domésticos no deben ser utilizados con corrientes
superiores a los 16ª. Existen en el mercado tomas específicas
para corrientes superiores: CTAC, SOLERA, etc
