Sergei Kashin “Just One Of Those Days” Self Production 2004. Este es un
disco concebido, grabado y producido en Rusia por un cantante y guitarrista
enamorado del blues, aunque provenga de un país tan lejano en distancia y
mentalidad. Sergei sabe bien lo que se lleva entre manos y completa una
exposición del lenguaje del blues con una buena aproximación y criterio, a
pesar de algunas limitaciones. Arropado por un grupo de músicos de su
entorno, Kashin se desenvuelve con soltura en dieciséis canciones donde el
factor primordial es el blues (Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Big Maceo,
Elmore James), pero también incluye algunos temas propios en los que brilla
su vertiente más creativa que impregna a su música de una visión más
personal y profunda. CORRECTO. This cd has been conceived, produced and
recorded in Russia by Sergei Kashin. Although he comes from such a distant
out of blues country, Sergei is a singer and guitar player who deeply loves
blues. He really knows what he is doing and he cleverly plays blues with
conviction and criteria, although in some punctual aspects he is a little bit
limited. He is backed by good local musicians who give him the support to do
an easy performing along the sixteen songs included on the cd, the majority
blues covers (Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Big Maceo, Elmore James).
Besides he has also included some own songs that give a more creative
personal deep vision to the music he plays. GOOD.
Jack Reymond “Angels Cry”. PICAP 2004. Joven cantante y guitarrista nacido
en 1978 en España, concretamente en Cataluña. Influenciado por la música
rock y blues gracias a su padre, quien le regala su primera guitarra al cumplir
los 14 años, Jack empieza muy pronto a componer sus propias canciones. En
este trabajo nuestro hombre toca guitarra acústica, eléctrica, slide y armónica
y se acompaña de batería, bajo y piano en los quince temas que componen
este ‘Angels Cry’. Reymond cuenta también con algunos invitados en la
percusión y las voces. Música americana, influencias de Mark Knopfler, algo
de pop, Stones, Bob Dylan y algún que otro blues, son la base de este disco
realizado por un músico joven y honesto que ha puesto el alma, el corazón y
se ha volcado por completo y con enorme ilusión en esta obra. BUENO. Young
singer and guitar player born in 1978 in Catalonia (Spain). He has become
deeply influenced by rock and blues music, thanks to his father who gave him
his first guitar when he was only fourteen years old and Jack began soon to
write his own songs. In this cd he plays electric and acoustic guitar, slide and
harmonica and he is also backed by drums, bass and piano along the fifteen
songs included on “Angels Cry” cd, together with some guest musicians on
percussion and vocals. Americana music with Mark Knopfler, Stones and Bob
Dylan influences, together with a little bit of pop music and some blues, are the
basis of this cd performed with a young honest musician who has done it with
an amazing enthusiasm, putting his whole heart and soul on it. VERY GOOD.
Empty Can Band “Still Alive!”. Self Production 2004. Los Empty Can están
liderados por Dave Glynn, excelente compositor, cantante y guitarra rítmica.
Después de casi cuatro años sin entrar en un estudio, en este nuevo trabajo
nos ofrecen catorce canciones llenas de buenos momentos y con un gran
número de variadas influencias que van del folk a la música americana con
raíces, pasando por el rock and roll y naturalmente por el blues. Además de
Dave Glynn, el grupo se completa con Johnny Mack a la guitarra solista y
órgano, JD Klatt al bajo, Rich Van Ham a la armónica y percusión y finalmente
Paul Wegman a la batería. Música eminentemente dirigida a quien quiera
pasarlo bien y mover el cuerpo, pero sin estridencias ni pretensiones que
pretendan ir mas allá de la propia diversión. CORRECTO. Dave Glynn, excellent
songwriter, singer and rhythm guitar player, firmly leads The Empty Can Band.
After four years without any recording they have come back to the recording
studios to produce a fourteen songs cd full of delicious moments and different
musical influences, from folk to roots, Americana music, rock and roll and, of
course blues. Besides Dave Glynn himself, you will find Johnny Mack on lead
guitar and keyboards, JD Klatt on bass, Rich Van Ham on harmonica and
percussion and Paul Wegman on drums. Music specially devoted to those of
you who want to enjoy a good time or dancing with an unpretentious cool
music that only looks to please listeners. GOOD.
Raoul And The Big Time “Cold Outside”. Big Time 2004. Fantástico el nuevo
álbum de este estupendo cantante y armonicista que nos trae un soplo de aire
fresco con su particular, personal e intima visión del blues más clásico pero
con un toque de actualidad y grandes dosis de pasión y entrega. Raoul nos
ofrece blues de Chicago, jump blues y mucho swing, a base de piano, guitarra,
contrabajo y armónica. El estilo de Raoul Bhaneja con la armónica amplificada
es solemne, musculoso y con la particular habilidad de poseer lo que los
armonicistas denominamos ‘a good fat tone’. El disco cuenta con excelentes
invitados como son Junior Watson a la guitarra, Big Joe Maher a la batería y
voz y Mark Hummel a la armónica. Gran disco de de blues años cincuenta con
el que todo buen aficionado al blues gozará enormemente, en especial los
amantes de la armónica. MUY BUENO. Splendid new album of this amazing
singer and harp player, who brings us a fresh air blast with his personal
particular intimist way of approaching to the most traditional blues but always
spiced with an actual touch, great passion and commitment. Raoul gives us a
selection of Chicago blues, jump blues and a lot of swing, performed with
piano, guitar, acoustic bass and harmonica. With the amplified harp Raoul
Bhaneja gives a grave strong playing and he is particularly gifted with that
sound harp players usually call ‘a good deep fat tone’. The cd gathers a bunch
of excellent guest musicians such as Junior Watson on guitar, Big Joe Maher
on drums and vocals and Mark Hummel on harmonica. An amazing original
fifties blues cd all blues lovers with certainly enjoy, especially those of you
who love harmonica blues. GREAT.
Les Dudek “Freestyle!”. EFlat 2002. El cantante y guitarrista Les Dudek nos
propone un disco fuerte, tremendamente compacto y lleno del más puro rock
and roll sin fisuras y con una energía desbordante. Desde el primer al último
tema el álbum transpira una densidad y una garra que traspasan todos los
umbrales de la producción musical más convencional. Si os gusta el hard rock
blues con piruetas y solos de guitarra con cascadas de notas que retumban
como un volcán en erupción, entonces este disco os entusiasmará. Les Dudek
tiene aplomo y buenas maneras y su técnica a la guitarra es más que
convincente. BUENO. Singer and guitar player Les Dudek has done a powerful
strong cd with straight energetic solid rock and roll. From the first to the last
cd song you will find a really hard electrifying atmosphere that exceeds the
most conventional musical production. If you like hard rock blues with
powerful technical guitar solos and a deluge of musical notes that explode like
a volcano eruption, you will surely love this cd. Les Dudek shows a convincing
guitar technique and a tasteful performing too. VERY GOOD.
Tee “Lights On”. Naked 2005. Tee es un músico que lleva veinte años en la
escena musical por lo que su conocimiento del lenguaje del blues es
excelente. Su forma de cantar y tocar la guitarra es intensa, dramática y
exuberante y en todo momento se entrega con pasión, alma y mucho
sentimiento. Influenciado por T-Bone Walker nuestro hombre ha sabido
desarrollar un estilo personal y tremendamente efectivo, siendo actualmente
una nueva y gran revelación dentro del panorama del blues europeo,
especialmente en Bélgica y Francia donde goza de un gran prestigio como
intérprete de blues. Durante los últimos tres años ha sido ‘sideman’ de
músicos como Mark Hummel, Lynwood Slim, Candye Kane, James Harman,
Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone, Johnny Dyer o Rusty Zinn. Un álbum lleno de
intensidad, pasión y entrega a cargo de uno de los mejores exponentes
europeos del blues más clásico con sonido años sesenta. MUY BUENO. For
more than twenty years Tee has been active on the musical scene. This is why
he has got an excellent knowledge of blues music language. He has an intense

that has made him become a high considered new emerging artist among
European blues circles, especially in Belgium and France where he has gained
a good prestige as a blues musician. During the last three years he has been

Buttnaked “The Big Splash”. Naked 2005. Este grupo belga construye su
personal lenguaje musical a partir de las estructuras del blues para, de este
modo, explorar los vericuetos y variados caminos de la música popular, tales
como rock, soul, funk, afro music, reggae, flamenco, etc. El grupo sabe dar
vistosidad y colorido a todas sus fantasías creativas que van mas allá de lo
que uno puede esperar de un grupo convencional de rock and roll.. La banda
está integrada por Marc Bodart que canta y toca la guitarra, Patrick Louis
también a la voz y la guitarra, Miguel Pumares Bizzotto al bajo y Georges
Triantafylou a la batería, amen de algunos invitados especiales que participan
en este “The Big Splash”. Si buscais algo diferente a los doce compases pero,
al mismo tiempo, con calidad suficiente, entonces probad con los Buttnaked
BUENO. This Belgian band build their personal music language from blues
structures so, with these solid basis, they explore other different ways of
popular music, such as rock, soul, funk, afro music, reggae or even flamenco.
They provide a brilliant colourful cover to all their creative fantasies that go
further up one could expect from a rock and roll band. You will find Marc
Bodart on vocals and guitar, Patrick Louis on vocals and guitar too, Miguel
Pumares Bizzotto on bass and Georges Triantafylou on drums, plus some
special guests who add some warm details to the cd. If you look for something
different from twelve bar blues with quality enough to satisfy you, then you

Big Dave “Tellin’ You”. Naked 2005. Otro espléndido disco de esta pequeña
compañía belga llamada Naked. En esta ocasión se trata de un brillante e
inspirado cantante y armonicista que posee la técnica y el estilo de los
grandes maestros de Chicago de los cincuenta. Little Walter, Shakey Horton,
James Cotton, Junior Wells, los dos Sonny Boy y George Smith figuran entre
sus más inmediatas influencias. La banda desarrolla un ‘rockin’-down-homestraight-ahead-blues’ conciso, directo y contundente que conecta con el
aficionado con la facilidad con que los grandes maestros del género saben
hacerlo. Big Dave y sus muchachos saben como llegar al oyente con su
música, interpretando el blues de una manera sencilla, elegante y sin fisuras.
Gran disco de esta banda liderada por este auténtico ‘soplador’ llamado Big
Dave. MUY BUENO. Another splendid new release of the small Belgium label
named Naked. This time they present an inspired bright singer and harmonica
player with the technique and musical style of fifties Chicago great masters.
Little Walter, Shakey Horton, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Sonny Boy I and II or
George Smith are his closer influences. The band develops a powerful ‘hardrockin’-down-home-straight-ahead-blues’ that immediately connects with
listeners with the easy gift only great blues artists have. Big Dave and his
musicians really know to catch the audience with their music, performing on a
cool simple but at the same time compact and elegant way. Excellent cd
presenting a band leaded by this real ‘blower’ called Big Dave. GREAT.
Various Artists “BluesCazorla”. Gaztelupeko Hotsak 2005. Imprescindible
disco para todos aquellos que quieran conocer cómo se realiza el blues en
España. El álbum presenta catorce bandas o grupos españoles interpretando
tanto temas propios como versiones, cantados en inglés y en lengua
vernácula. La selección que se incluye en este disco es realmente excelente y
da una espléndida visión de la gran calidad de las bandas que han sido
escogidas para formar parte del cd. El disco es una combinación de temas
grabados en estudio o bien recogidos en directo desde el escenario de uno de
los festivales de blues más importante en España, que no es otro que el de
Cazorla. Un disco variado que muestra sin trampa ni cartón cómo se cocina y
se cuece el blues en España. MUY BUENO. This cd becomes essential for
those of you who want to know how is blues performed in Spain. The album
gathers fourteen Spanish bands doing versions together with their own songs,
sung in English and in their own language. The selection included is excellent
and gives a good vision of the high quality displayed by the bands chosen for
this cd. The album combines studio tracks with other recorded live songs on
stage of one of the most important Spanish blues festival, Cazorla Blues. A
varied interesting cd that perfectly reflects how deliciously Spanish blues is
now cooked. GREAT.
Queen Esther “Talkin’ FishBowl Blues”. El Recordings 2004. La vocalista
Queen Esther nos deleita con su voz cálida y al mismo tiempo muy
refrescante, en un disco plagado de buenos y jugosos momentos de gran
calidad musical. Esther pone énfasis y buenas dosis de ritmo a las doce
canciones que integran este “Talkin’ FishBowl Blues”. Ella y su banda ponen
de manifiesto un sonido y un estilo diferente que les distingue de otras
muchas bandas de estilo similar. Su música es un compendio ecléctico de
blues, black-americana, neo-vaudeville, rock alternativo y trip hop. Como
podreis deducir se trata de una amalgama de curiosidades sonoras que
sorprenderán a mas de uno. BUENO. Singer Queen Esther delights us with her
warm but at the same time cool voice on a cd full of good delicious moments of
high musical quality. With a big dose of rhythm, she stresses everyone of the
twelve songs included on “Talkin’ FishBowl Blues”. Esther and her band give
us an original style and sound, which makes them become completely different
from other similar bands. Their music is an eclectic summary of blues. blackAmericana, neo-vaudeville, alternative rock and trip hop. As you can easily
imagine, the cd gathers a mixture of curious sounds that will really surprise
most of you. VERY GOOD.
Col Ray & The Scary Cats “Feather”. Self Production 2004. Aqui está el bueno
de Col Ray haciendo camino al andar y ofreciéndonos trece cortes de
interesante factura en el más puro estilo de la roots music, es decir, unas
pocas dosis de variado hillibily-country-punk-blues, todo ello servido por el
apetecible sonido que extrae de su Resonador guitar, del washboard, la
armónica, el kazoo, alguna que otra guitarra y un par de saxos, el tenor y el
soprano. Un disco curioso, acústico y lleno de colorido, que da una nueva
dimensión al blues tradicional, con una visión diferente y con nuevas y
refrescantes ideas que se plasman con acierto y elegancia. Estoy seguro que
disfrutareis con este nuevo trabajo de Col Ray y sus muchachos. BUENO. Here
comes good old fellow Col Ray, making his way along thirteen interesting cuts
that follow traditional roots music path, adding some drops of varied hillibilycountry-punk-blues, all served with the appealing sound of his Resonador
guitar, washboard, harmonica, kazoo, some other guitars and soprano and
tenor sax. An original different acoustic bright record, which gives a new
dimension to traditional blues with cool bright new ideas expressed on a clever
and tasteful way. I dare say you will certainly enjoy Cool Ray’s new piece of
work. VERY GOOD.
Robert Fairweather & The Luv Machine “Blizzard In Chicago”. Self Production
2004. En verano del 2004 el cantante y guitarrista Robert Fairweather finalizó
este disco que aquí comentamos y que contiene trece cortes variados y
agradables de oír, grabados con buenos solos de guitarra y mucho énfasis. El
disco es una selección de canciones de diferente factura, en su mayoría
compuestas por el mismo Robert, y que poseen una fuerte influencia de la
música rock de los setenta con algunos destellos del blues de Chicago más
contemporáneo. Como dice el propio Fairweather: “en este cd encontrareis
condensados en sesenta minutos de música, diez años de mi propia
existencia”. MUY BUENO. Singer and guitar player Robert Fairweather
recorded this cd during the summer 2004. He included thirteen varied relaxed
cuts, with good guitar solos played with a warm feeling. The cd gathers a
selection of songs of different music styles, mostly Robert own ones, with
deep influences of seventies rock music, spiced with some contemporary
Chicago blues details. In Robert Fairweather own words “you will find ten
years of my own life summarized in sixty minutes of music”. VERY GOOD.
Willie King “Jukin’ At Bettie’s”. Freedom Creek 2004. Magnifica exposición de
blues ‘down-home’ tocado e interpretado con verdadera fe y profundidad.
Blues que sale del corazón y del alma para convertirse en dogmático y
alternativo, sembrando en el corazón de quien lo escucha la auténtica semilla
de la verdad hecha música, convertida en deseo musical hipnótico y
consecuente con las frases que de principio a fin recita Willie King con un gran
poder de comunicación y persuasión. Música gratificante y auténtica que no
podemos desdeñar todos cuantos nos enorgullecemos de amar el blues mas
que nada en este mundo. Sesenta minutos de delirio y emoción grabados en
directo con Willie King a la voz y la guitarra, Aaron Hodge como segundo
guitarra, Travis Hodge al bajo, Willie James Williams a la batería y finalmente
Rick Asherson a los teclados, la armónica actuando también como productor.
Un gran disco. MUY BUENO. Splendid sample of pure ‘down-home’ blues
performed with deep real faith. Blues that comes out from the deepest part of
heart and soul to become a musical dogma, sowing the real seed of true music
on the mind of people who listen to the hypnotic wishing rhythm and the
communicative persuading lyrics Willie King recites and sings. Gratifying real
music to be taken into account for those of us who feel proud to love blues
more than anything else. Sixty minutes of wild emotion recorded live by Willie
King on vocals and guitar, Aaron Hodge on second guitar, Travis Hodge on
bass, Willie James Williams on drums and Rick Asherson on keyboards,
harmonica and doing recording production as well. An amazing cd. GREAT.
Vasti Jackson “No Borders To The Blues”. VJM Records 2003. Desde
Mississippi nos llega este auténtico y genuino exponente del blues actual y
contemporáneo, aunque salvaguardando fielmente el espíritu y las formas más
ortodoxas del blues de ayer, de hoy y de siempre, Vasti se entrega con alma y
corazón e impone un ritmo trepidante a los dieciséis cortes de los que se
compone el álbum. Dotado de una excelente técnica con la guitarra eléctrica e
influenciado por los tres Kings (Freddie, Albert y B.B.) y por Bobby Rush en lo
que concierne a la voz y al show escénico, nuestro hombre expone con
vehemencia su discurso a base de un blues sólido y potente. Jackson encara
este trabajo titulado “No Borders To The Blues” con un gusto mas que
exquisito, evidenciando en todo momento un enorme talento musical y
creativo. En un futuro no muy lejano podemos esperar de él un éxito más que
seguro dentro de este reducido mundo del negocio del blues. Al menos eso es
lo que personalmente le deseo. MUY BUENO. From Mississippi comes this true
genuine exponent of the most contemporary actual blues, but who faithfully
keeps the traditional forms and spirit of timeless blues. Vasti Jackson always
gives the best of himself, together with a great feeling and a rolling exciting
rhythm along the sixteen tracks included on the cd. Gifted with an excellent
electric guitar technique, he is deeply influenced by ‘The Three Kings’ (Freddie,
Albert and B.B.) but specially by Bobby Rush on his vocal and stage show
displaying, Jackson gives us a powerful solid passionate blues performing
along the whole cd. “No Borders To The Blues” is a very tasteful piece of work
where Vasti Jackson let us see his amazing creative and musical talent. On a
next future he will surely reach a great success on the blues business world. At
least this is what I wish him. GREAT.
Steve Conn “Steve Conn” Not Really 2003. Steve Conn aborda con gran lucidez
y de forma totalmente satisfactoria, doce temas elegantes y llenos de magia,
dando en todos ellos lo mejor de sí mismo. Dotado de una voz profunda y con
graves matices, Steve desgrana con pasión y entrega una serie de canciones
para todos los gustos y corrientes, pero naturalmente dando siempre su
máxima expresión y reconocimiento al espíritu del blues, aunque no exento de
otras influencias musicales. Conn viste su música con las mejores galas de
que dispone y los músicos que le acompañan muestran una íntima comunión
con todo lo que nuestro hombre desea de ellos. El disco contiene las letras de
sus canciones para que quien se sienta interesado por su poesía, pueda
disfrutar de ella. Un álbum de gran sensibilidad y muy bien construido. MUY
BUENO. Steve Conn cleverly performs twelve magic and tasteful songs with a
very satisfactory result, always giving the best of himself too. Gifted with a
deep fat voice full of nuances, Steve offers a series of complete different
passionate songs that keep on forward line the expression and spirit of blues
mixed with some other musical influences. Conn dresses his music with the
best clothes and all the musicians who back him, show a complete
understanding with Steve’s demands. You will find all song lirycs on cd inner
notes, so those of you who like poetry will certainly enjoy them. In short, a well
built cd with an extreme sensitivity. GREAT.
Ratso “Silent Witness”. Riff Rat 2000. // Ratso “Water Rising”. Riff Rat 2003.
John ‘Ratso’ Gerardi es un excelente cantante y guitarrista, un verdadero
veterano de la escena de New York que conoce el negocio de la música y
mezcla con acierto, elegancia e inteligencia, todas las vertientes de la música
negra, recogiendo hábilmente las influencias más variopintas que os podais
imaginar. A Ratso no le importa ni siente ningún recato en fusionar estilos que
van desde Muddy Waters a Michael Jackson e incluso Tom Jones, pero
siempre con una gracia sutil y un gusto personal exquisito. Los músicos que le
acompañan son tremendamente inteligentes y conocedores de su oficio,
brillando con una profesionalidad fuera de serie, tanto en “Silent Witness”
como en “Water Rising”. Dos discos vibrantes, frescos y llenos de energia
que no os dejarán indiferentes. La producción y los arreglos son efectivos y
bien cimentados, construidos sobre bases sólidas y eficaces que dan como
resultado dos estupendos álbumes. Pop, r&b, soul, rock, blues y ‘american
roots’ se coordinan con habilidad, a lo largo de estos dos grandes trabajos de
Ratso. MUY BUENOS. John ‘Ratso’ Gerardi is an excellent singer, guitar player
besides a real veteran of New York scene who really knows music business
and cleverly combines with very good taste all black music fields, gathering
the most varied musical influences. Ratso does not mind to mix Muddy Waters
with Michael Jackson or even Tom Jones music, and he does it with a subtle
gift and an extreme good taste. The musicians who back him cleverly know
their job and give a bright professional performing in both “Silent Witness” and
“Water Rising” cds. Two bright cool but at the same time powerful records that
will surely satisfy you. An effective final production and solid arrangements
built on efficient basis, give as a result these two excellent albums. Pop, r&b,
soul, rock, blues and american roots music are tastefully combined along
these two impressing Ratso’s pieces of work. GREAT.
Grez Brown “American Knight”. Riff Rat 2003. Buena producción y buenas
dosis de’ heavy-rockin’-blues’ es lo que nos propone este nuevo valor de la
guitarra eléctrica, muy en la línea de artistas como Satriani o Steve Vai. Su
‘marca’ personal, el ‘sello’ de su música es una simbiosis de estilos que van
desde los Queen hasta Bruce Springsteen y los virtuosos solos en la línea de
los guitarristas anteriormente mencionados. Un disco contundente con
incendiarios y espectaculares solos de guitarra y una banda que acompaña a
Grez y que exhibe todo su poder incendiario y salvaje, dando la réplica que
nuestro hombre necesita para poder expresar su mensaje duro, crudo y sobre
todo comunicativo que, a fin de cuentas, es lo que todo artista busca cuando
nos transmite su obra. BUENO. Good final production together with a good
dose of ‘heavy-rockin’-blues’ is the proposal of this new genius of electric
guitar, who follows the path of artists like Satriani or Steve Val. His personal
‘mark’, the ‘stamp’ of the music he plays is a mixture of different styles, from
Queen to Bruce Springsteen, and his virtuoso guitar solos always follow the
line of the previous mentioned guitar players. A powerful record with terrific
flaming Grez guitar fireworks always backed by a wild hot band which show
the best musical arguments to make Grez express his hard tough and
especially communicative message which, it the end, is what all musicians
look for when they give us their work. VERY GOOD.
