PAST TENSE
En el Inglés, para indicar que una acción se hizo en el pasado ( ayer, hace un año, etc.), en
la mayoría de los casos basta con agregarle a los verbos la terminación “ED” . A este tipos
de verbos se les conoce como “REGULARES”. Existen miles de verbos regulares.
Ejemplo: Yo trabajo
Tú contestas
Ellos quieren
= I WORK
; Yo trabajé
= I WORKED
=YOU ANSWER ; Tú contestaste = YOU ASNWERED
=THEY WANT ; Ellos quisieron= THEY WANTED.
A los verbos que no siguen esta regla se les llama “IRREGULARES” y son alrededor de
300. Para formar el pasado de estos verbos no existe regla; pueden cambiar una sola letra ,
pueden no cambiar nada o pueden cambiar por completo.
Ejemplo: Yo voy
Tú ves
Ellos ponen
= I GO
= YOU SEE
= THEY PUT
; Yo fui
= I WENT
; Tú viste
= YOU SAW
; Ellos pusieron = THEY PUT
Nota importante : Hablar en tiempo pasado es mucho más fácil en Inglés que en Español.
En Español , si queremos conjugar un verbo en pasado , para cada persona hay una
diferente terminación del verbo: Yo tuve, tú tuviste , él tuvo, etc. Pero en el idioma Inglés se
utiliza la misma palabra para todas las personas: I had , you had, he had, she had, etc., ya
sean verbos regulares o irregulares el verbo no cambia.
Otra ventaja de los verbos en inglés:
En el caso de los verbos regulares la terminación “ed” no solamente sirve para formar el
pasado, sino tambien para formar el pasado participio ( que equivale a las terminaciones en
Español: “ado”, “ido”, “to”, “so”, “cho” . Por ejemplo, la palabra WORKED no solamente
puede significar “trabajé” “trabajó”, “trabajamos”, “trabajaste”, “trabajaron”, sino
también puede significar “trabajado”
EJEMPLOS DE CONJUGACIONES EN PASADO:

COMO HACER PREGUNTAS EN PASADO
Para hacer preguntas en pasado simple se utiliza el auxiliar “DID” antes del sujeto. El verbo
permanece en su forma natural. No se utiliza el verbo en pasado para hacer preguntas.
Se sabe que se trata de una pregunta en pasado por el auxiliar “DID”.
EJEMPLO: Si uno quiere preguntar en Inglés “¿Tuvieron ellos vacaciones?” se construye
de la siguiente manera :

No olvides que en las preguntas en pasado el verbo se usa en presente ( en su forma
natural).
Si uno quiere preguntas como “¿Dónde estudiaste Inglés?”, antes del “did” se debe usar
las expresiones “dónde”, “´cuándo”, “cómo, “qué, etc. (Where, when, how, what, etc.).
Esta pregunta quedaría : “Where
did
you
study
English?”

Nota que aunque en Español no se mencione a veces el sujeto en Inglés siempre se
debe mencionar. Cuando uno dice VIVIERON FELICES?, aunque no se menciona el
sujeto, uno sabe que se trata de ellos, pero en el Inglés es indispensable que se mencione el
sujeto: DID THEY LIVE HAPPY?
COMO HACER NEGACIONES EN PASADO
Hacer negaciones en pasado es sumamente sencillo. basta con utilizar las palabras “Did
not” o “Didn´t” después del sujeto y antes del verbo. El verbo, sea regular o irregular,
permanece en su forma natural. Se sabrá que se trata de una acción en pasado por el uso de
“did”.
EJEMPLOS:

vio el espectáculo. *Nota que “didn´t” = no
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Nota importantísima: Hay algunas preguntas y negaciones en pasado que no requieren del uso de
“did”.Cuando se hagan preguntas o negaciones con WAS ( pasado de is ,am) ,WERE (pasado de “are”) y
COULD ( pasado de “can” que significa “poder”) no se utiliza “did”.

Para decir :“¿estuviste en casa? = were you at home?
no estuviste en casa = you were not at home.
Para decir: “¿pudieron ellos estudiar? = could they study ?
“Ellos no pudieron estudiar = They could not study
