Bienvenidos a la Semilla edición 2013!
¡Venga a nuestros foros comunitarios el 7 de diciembre
en Greenfield o el 14 de diciembre en Salinas, para aprender
acerca de los resultados de éste año! También vamos a dar a las
madres la opción de enterarse de los niveles de químicos que
medimos en sus cuerpos y de sus hijos. Muchos participantes de
CHAMACOS que han estado con el estudio desde que nacieron
ya han tenido la oportunidad de aprender acerca de sus niveles
de pesticidas en las visitas anteriores. Ahora, usted puede escoger
por aprender sobre los 4 niveles de productos químicos que
medidos cuando los niños tenían 9 años de edad. Estos químicos
no son pesticidas usados actualmente en el Valle de Salinas. Son
viejos pesticidas que se usaron en México (DDT) y químicos que se
encuentran en muebles y plásticos en nuestros hogares. Hay tres
maneras que usted puede aprender de sus niveles y los niveles de
su hijo:
1. Venga a los foros comunitarios de CHAMACOS, el 7 de
diciembre en Greenfield o el 14 de diciembre en Salinas y reciba

Welcome to the 2013 edition of La Semilla!
Come to our community forums on
December 7th in Greenfield or December 14th
in Salinas to learn about this year’s study results!
We will also be giving mothers the option to find
out the levels of chemicals that we measured in
you and your children’s bodies. Many CHAMACOS
participants who have been with the study since
they were born have already had the chance to learn
about their pesticide levels from earlier visits. Now,
you can choose to learn the levels of four chemicals
measured when the children were 9 years old. These
chemicals are not pesticides currently used in the
Salinas Valley. They are old pesticides that were used
in Mexico (DDT) and chemicals found in furniture
and plastics in our homes. There are three ways you
can learn you and your child’s levels:
1. Come to the CHAMACOS Community
Forums, December 7th in Greenfield or
December 14th in Salinas and receive your
results.
2. Get your results at your next CHAMACOS
visit (please let us know before the visit that you
would like them), or schedule a visit just to learn
your results.
3. Call the CHAMACOS office at (831) 759-6548
and ask to have the information mailed to you. We
can then talk over the phone.

¿El consumo de alimentos orgánicos baja los
niveles de pesticidas en los niños?
Does eating organic food lower pesticide
levels in children?
Hemos encontrado que algunos niveles de pesticidas
en la orina de los niños de 3 a 6 años de edad bajaron
cuando se les dio alimentos orgánicos (productos
agrícolas, lácteos, granos,
panes, cereales, huevos, jugos, y
botanas) para comer durante una
semana.
Los niveles de pesticidas que
no se usan en los cultivos de
alimentos, como los pesticidas
que se usan en los hogares para
hormigas y cucarachas, no se
vieron afectados por la dieta.

We found that some pesticide levels in the urine of 3
to 6 year old children decreased when they were given
organic foods (produce, dairy, grains, breads, cereals,
eggs, juices, and
snack foods) to eat
for one week. Levels
of pesticides that
are not used on
food crops, such as
pesticides used in
homes for ants and
cockroaches, were
not affected by diet.

important way that
young children
are exposed to
pesticides. But
pesticides used in the home also contribute.

Is there a link between organophosphate
pesticides and asthma symptoms?
CHAMACOS children who were exposed to more
organophosphate pesticides before age
5 were more likely to have signs
of asthma by age 5 or 7. Children
whose mothers were exposed to
higher levels of pesticides during
pregnancy were also more likely to
have asthma-like symptoms during
childhood than children whose
mothers were exposed to lower levels
of pesticides.
Why it matters
Asthma is the most common chronic
disease in children and is the
leading cause of hospitalization. By
2025, it is estimated that more than
350 million people around the world,
mostly children, will have asthma.

Algunos pesticidas contienen el metal manganeso.
Medimos niveles de manganeso en los dientes de los

Some pesticides contain the metal, manganese. We
measured manganese levels in children’s teeth and dust
from their homes. We found higher levels of manganese
in house dust of homes where farmworkers’ shoes and
work clothes were stored inside the home, in homes in
the southern part of the Salinas Valley, and in homes
that were closer to fields treated
with manganese pesticides. These
things were also linked to higher
manganese in children’s teeth.
Homes with doormats to wipe shoes
had lower levels of manganese.
We compared how children
with high levels and low levels of
manganese in their teeth did on
learning tests. Overall, it does not
seem that manganese is linked
to lasting learning problems in
CHAMACOS children.
Why this matters
El manganeso es un nutriente importante y es bueno

Manganese is an important nutrient and is good for
you in small amounts. However, some studies find that
exposure to high levels of manganese is related to
poorer brain development in children.

All three studies we presented this year were about pesticides used in the Salinas Valley. People can be exposed to
pesticides through skin contact, breathing, and eating food with pesticide residues. Young children can get more in their
bodies because they often put their hands in their mouths. Below are three steps you can to take to avoid pesticides.

Wash your and your
children’s hands often and
well with soap and water.
If you work in agriculture, help keep pesticides away
from your family. Changing your work clothes and shoes
before going into your home and bathing right away if
possible. Leave your work shoes outside the door.

CHAMACOS Chemical Level Reports Guide
It is your decision to see your Chemical Level Report
Some people are interested in knowing their chemical levels, and some may not want to know. For
some of these chemicals, it is very difficult to lower your levels. It is important to know that nearly all Americans
are exposed to these chemicals, and they are unlikely to make you or your child sick. However, scientists like
the CHAMACOS researchers are still trying to learn if these chemicals may have subtle effects on health and
development. If you think it will make you worried to know your chemical levels, you may prefer not to see
them, and that’s fine.
Which chemicals are measured
DDT, a pesticide that is no longer used in
the US or Mexico.
PCBs, chemicals once used in electronics.
PBDEs, chemicals once used in furniture as
flame retardants.
BPA, a chemical used in canned food
linings and in some plastics.
