UPDATE July 29, 2014
This is an update July 29, 2014 on the Central American families being served by Catholic Social
Services and by other partners, who have formed the Laredo Human Relief Team.
Catholic Social Services has moved onto the property of the Holding Institute Community Center, 1102
Santa Maria (entrance on Davis Street). After analyzing how families can be best served and due to St.
Peter’s Catholic School needing to prepare their classrooms for the new school year, it was determined
that housing our operation there would be beneficial to the families and our agency, thus creating a one
stop center
The following information is the latest update of what is occurring at our border.
The Central American families continue to cross the US border. In the past 9 days the Laredo area has
experienced an extreme drop of numbers from the earlier weeks. Currently approximately 7-10 families
are being released from the local processing centers. This indicates that no more families are being
transferred from McAllen to Laredo. It also indicates that families are crossing from Nuevo Laredo now
and being detained for up to three days and released if they have a family or sponsor in the United States.
These families are crossing directly from Nuevo Laredo which is different from before, when families
were crossing at McAllen, Texas.
The challenge we continue to have is the lack of communication between Border Patrol/ICE, however it
is something we continue to work toward. This means that we do not receive any notification when
families are released and dropped off at Greyhound.
The community local and afar have answered the call for donations. All agencies involved have received
adequate supply of clothing, toiletries, snacks, etc.
Catholic Social Services in the past 40 days has provided services to over 1300 individuals of which
include 640 children.
WHAT’S NEXT
This humanitarian mission appears to be a long term mission as families continue to cross into the U.S.
The Team will continue to keep the welcome and respite center open until further analyzes of the
situation is completed. Catholic Social Services continues to provide the transportation MondaySaturday from 10am to 8pm from bus station to Holding Institute where families received full services of
showers and change of clothing. Catholic Social Services also provides access to phone center, respite
care, medical care, and meals. Families leave the center with confirmed bus tickets, change of clothes,
travel snack bag and rested.
The community local and afar have made this humanitarian mission possible with all the donated items
received. Items continue to be needed such as travel size toiletries, snacks (no sugary items) cups of
soup (Ramen Soup Cups), international telephone cards, etc. (At this time clothes is not needed)
The most pressing form of donation needed is monetary to support the cost of operating the welcome and
respite center. These cost include water, electricity, fuel, insurance, garbage pickup, staff, etc.

Este es una actualización sobre las familias Centro Americanas que han sido atendidas por Servicios
Sociales Católicos y otras organizaciones afiliadas, los que han formado el Equipo de Ayuda
Humanitaria de Laredo.
Servicios Sociales Católicos se ha establecido dentro de la propiedad del Instituto y Centro Comunitario
Holding ubicado en 1102 Santa María (Entrada por calle Davis). Después de analizar lo que sería mejor
para las familias y debido a que la escuela Católica de St. Peter’s tiene que preparar sus salones de clase
para el nuevo año escolar, se determinó que teniendo nuestra operación en Holding sería más beneficioso
para las familias y nuestra organización.
Esta Misión Humanitaria parece que será a largo plazo ya que familias continúan cruzando hacia Estados
Unidos.
Las familias Centro Americanas continúan cruzando la frontera Estadunidense. En los últimos 9 días el
área de Laredo ha tenido una caída extremadamente baja comparada con las primeras semanas.
Actualmente de 7 a 10 familias son liberadas de los centros locales de detención. Esto indica que las
familias que están cruzando son detenidas hasta tres días y son liberadas si tienen un familiar o conocido
(Aval) en Estados Unidos. Estas familias están cruzando directamente de Nuevo Laredo lo que hace
diferente a lo de antes, cuando las familias cruzaban por McAllen, Texas.
El reto que seguimos teniendo es la falta de comunicación entre Border Patrol/ICE, aunque es algo en lo
que seguimos trabajando. Significa que no hay comunicación dentro de sus equipos sobre las familias
que van hacer liberadas.
La comunidad local y de fuera han apoyado con sus donativos. Todas las organizaciones involucradas han
recibido una cantidad adecuada de ropa, artículos de aseo personal, snacks, etc.
Servicios Sociales Católicos ha asistido aproximadamente 1300 personas de las cuales 640 son niños en
edades que fluctúan de 0 a 17 años de edad.
Que Es Lo Que Sigue:
Continuaremos abriendo y dando la bienvenida a estas familias hasta que se haga un análisis determinado
de la situación. Servicios Sociales Católicos continúa transportando de lunes a sábado de la estación de
autobuses al Instituto Holding para que las familias tomen una ducha y cambien de ropa. Servicios
Sociales Católicos también asiste en forma gratuita el acceso a llamadas telefónicas, área de descanso,
ayuda médica y alimentos.
La comunidad local y de fuera a través de sus donativos han hecho posible esta Misión Humanitaria. Se
sigue necesitando artículos de limpieza personal, sopas ramen, tarjetas para llamadas internacionales, etc.
(Por el momento no se necesita más ropa)
El donativo más preciado es económico (dinero) para poder seguir manteniendo el costo de operación de
este centro de ayuda y descanso. El costo incluye servicios de agua, luz, gasolina, seguros, colección de
basura, personal, etc.
