FAIR HOUSING CENTER OF CENTRAL INDIANA CELEBRATES FAIR HOUSING
MONTH WITH SECOND ANNUAL FAIR HOUSING CONFERENCE
INDIANAPOLIS – The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) is hosting its second
annual Fair Housing Conference on April 17, 2014 in Indianapolis with a keynote address to be
delivered by Carlotta Walls LaNier, the youngest member of the Little Rock Nine.
“Each April we celebrate the anniversary of the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act, and it
is an honor to have the opportunity to welcome a civil rights pioneer to Indianapolis as part of
this year’s Fair Housing Month events,” said Amy Nelson, Executive Director of the FHCCI. “As
we look forward to the work we hope to accomplish in furthering equal housing opportunities for
all, it’s important to acknowledge the history of the civil rights movement and those ‘foot soldiers
for freedom’ like Mrs. LaNier, whom we owe a great debt.”
The conference, entitled Building Inclusive Communities Through Fair Housing, was featured by
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard in a recent City proclamation honoring April 2014 as Fair
Housing Month. The conference is supported by 28 community partners. It features 8 morning
workshop options on various fair housing topics followed by Ms. LaNier’s luncheon keynote
address. The conference has been approved for 5.5 Continuing Legal Education hours, 5.5
NASW Social Work Continuing Education hours and broker/salesperson continuing real estate
credits. A book signing with Mrs. LaNier will also follow her keynote.
“Our community partners have been vital supporters of the FHCCI’s work to educate individuals
on their rights and responsibilities under fair housing laws and encourage residential
integration,” continued Nelson. “We are thrilled to have so many sponsors and participants
joining with us to support equal housing.”
Originally signed into law in April 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson, the federal Fair Housing
Act provided protection for persons from housing discrimination based on race, color, national
origin and religion. In 1974, the Act was amended to include gender (sex). President Ronald
Reagan signed the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988, which expanded protections to
families with children and people with disabilities. Today, it is unlawful under federal or state fair
housing laws to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender,
disability, ancestry, or familial status in rental housing, real estate sales, lending, insurance, and
any financial or other housing-related service. Every April is celebrated as Fair Housing Month
to honor the passage of the original law. This year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development has designated the theme of Fair Housing Month as Fair Housing is Your Right.

VIVIENDA JUSTA CON SU SEGUNDA CONFERENCIA ANUAL
INDIANAPOLIS –El Centro de Vivienda Justa de Indiana Central (FHCCI) está organizando su
segunda conferencia anual el 17 de abril del 2014 en Indianápolis con un discurso que será
pronunciado por Carlotta Walls LaNier, uno de los miembro más jóvenes del grupo de los
Nueve de Little Rock.
"Cada abril se celebra el aniversario de la aprobación de la a Ley Federal de Vivienda Justa, y
es un honor tener la oportunidad de darle la bienvenida a una pionera de los derechos civiles a
Indianápolis como parte de los eventos del Mes de la Vivienda Justa este año", dijo Amy
Nelson, Directora Ejecutiva del FHCCI. "Al mirar hacia adelante con el trabajo que esperamos
lograr de fomentar la igualdad de oportunidades de vivienda para todos, es importante
reconocer la historia del movimiento de los derechos civiles y a ‘los lideres que luchan por la
libertad’ como la Sra. LaNier, con quien tenemos una gran deuda."
La conferencia, titulada Construyendo Comunidades Incluyentes a través de la Igualdad de
Vivienda, fue presentada por el Alcalde Greg Ballard en una reciente proclamación de la
Ciudad honrando a Abril del 2014 como El Mes de Vivienda Justa. La conferencia es apoyada
por 28 organizaciones asociadas de la comunidad. Proveerá 8 talleres en la mañana sobre
diversos temas de igualdad de vivienda, seguidos por el discurso principal de la Sra. LaNier en
el almuerzo. La conferencia ha sido aprobada para proporcionar 5,5 horas de Educación
Jurídica Continua; 5,5 horas de Educación Continua certificadas por NASW para los
Trabajadores Sociales y Educación Continua para los agentes / vendedores de bienes raíces.
La Sra. LaNier también firmara sus libros después de su presentación.
"Nuestros socios de la comunidad han sido un apoyo vital en la labor del FHCCI para educar a
las personas sobre sus derechos y responsabilidades bajo las leyes de igualdad de vivienda y
fomentar la integración residencial ", continuó Nelson. "Estamos emocionados de tener a tantos

La Ley Federal de Vivienda Justa, originalmente promulgada en abril de 1968 por el presidente
Lyndon Johnson, proveía la protección a las personas contra la discriminación de vivienda con

Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano de EE.UU. ha designado el tema: La Vivienda Justa es su
