Reopening of Lucy Read School
We are pleased to announce that, following guidance from the Centers for Disease
Control, and in collaboration with local health authorities, the Austin School District will be
reopening the Lucy Read Pre-Kindergarten School on Thursday, May 7. The District will also
be lifting the prohibition on out-of-district field trips, effective the same date.
To date, there are two confirmed cases in Travis County. The one AISD student who
is a “probable case” of the H1N1 virus has improved and a full recovery is expected. During
the time the school was closed, it was thoroughly sanitized. We are fortunate that the
reported cases have been mild thus far. We will, however, have additional nursing staff on
duty at Read to answer any questions and in case there are any concerns.
AISD Student Health Services has been consulting closely with the local, regional and
state health departments to monitor this evolving situation, and we are all in accord on this
decision.
Please remain vigilant regarding any new information regarding the H1N1 virus. In the
meantime, we continue to stress the following on all of our campuses:
Contact your healthcare provider if you or your children become ill. Treat children’s
fever, with an appropriate dose based upon their age and weight, with Acetaminophen
(e.g. Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (e.g. Motrin). Ibuprofen is safe for children older than six
months. DO NOT TREAT CHILDREN WITH ASPIRIN – unless specifically
instructed to do so by your physician.
o Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the
tissue in the trash after you use it.
o Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
o Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay home for seven days after your symptoms
begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to
keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
o Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other
social distancing measures.

We very much appreciate your patience and cooperation during this unique time as we
work together to monitor the situation and provide a graded, prudent response based upon all
available information. We place the health of our students and staff first, while also striving to
limit the disruption to the AISD mission to educate our students.

Reapertura de la Escuela Lucy Read
Nos complace anunciar que, siguiendo la dirección de los Centros de Control de
Enfermedades, y en colaboración con autoridades locales de salud, el Distrito Escolar de
Austin volverá a abrir la Escuela de Prekindergarten Lucy Read el jueves, 7 de mayo. En la
misma fecha, el Distrito también quitará la prohibición de hacer viajes de excursión fuera del
distrito.
Hasta el momento, hay dos casos confirmados en el Condado de Travis. El
estudiante de AISD que es “caso probable” del virus H1N1 se ha mejorado y se espera su
completa recuperación. Durante el tiempo de cierre, se limpió cuidadosamente la escuela
para desinfectarla. Tenemos la fortuna de que los casos reportados hasta ahora han sido
leves. No obstante, en la escuela Read habrá personal de salud adicional en guardia en
caso de que haya preguntas o preocupaciones.
El Departamento de Servicios de Salud Estudiantil de AISD ha estado consultando
con los departamentos de salud regionales y estatales para monitorear el desarrollo de esta

Cúbranse la nariz y la boca con un pañuelo desechable al toser o estornudar. Tiren el
pañuelo a la basura después de usarlo.
Lávense las manos con frecuencia con jabón y agua, especialmente después de
toser o estornudar. Los desinfectantes para manos, con base de alcohol, también son
eficaces.
Eviten tocarse los ojos, nariz y boca. Los gérmenes se propagan de esta manera.
Eviten el contacto cercano con personas enfermas.
Si ustedes presentan síntomas de una enfermedad como la gripe, quédense en casa
durante 7 días después de que empiezan sus síntomas, o 24 horas después de que
éstos desaparecen, sea cual sea el mayor tiempo posible. Esto es para evitar infectar
a otros y propagar más el virus.
Sigan las instrucciones de salud pública tocante a los cierres de escuelas, evitando
las multitudes de gente y cumpliendo con otras medidas de distanciamiento social.
Apreciamos mucho su paciencia y colaboración durante este tiempo sin igual mientras
trabajamos juntos para monitorear la situación y proporcionarles una respuesta estudiada y
prudente basada en toda la información disponible. Colocamos la salud de nuestros
estudiantes y personal como algo primordial, mientras que luchamos por limitar la
interrupción de la misión de AISD de educar a nuestros estudiantes.
