Join Our New Prayer Shawl Ministry!

For decades, care for others and the love of knitting or crocheting have
been combined into a prayerful ministry reaching those in need of
comfort and solace. We happily begin the blessings of a Prayer Shawl
Ministry at St. Monica on Tuesdays at 10:00am starting in May and
Tuesday evenings starting in June.
Many blessings are crocheted or knitted into each shawl. The crafter
begins each shawl with prayer for the recipient, and intentions are
continued throughout its creation. A prayer is offered by the entire
ministry for those who receive each knitted or crocheted item before they
are delivered.
Shawls and blankets are given to those experiencing loss or illness or
simply in need of comfort. Participation in the ministry offers healing and
solace for the creators, too. Knitting and crocheting are proven to offer
healing benefits!
Beginners are welcome—this is a ministry of prayer, not perfection!
Whether you have little or no experience, we are happy to assist or to
teach you how to knit or crochet.
Bring your own yarn, needles and pattern. Or, if you’re new to knitting and
crocheting, you can borrow ours until you choose a pattern and are ready
to begin on your own.

The Church Renovation Update from Father Todd
In the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church a parish is defined in two ways, first as a community and then as a church:
“A parish is a certain community of the Christian faithful stably constituted in a particular church, whose pastoral care is entrusted to a pastor under the
authority of the diocesan bishop (CIC 515)”.
St. Monica parish has been a vibrant part of the Washington and Pike township communities since 1956. We are a very diverse group of people who in
some form or another are here every day to worship, study, pray, learn, serve, and be served. I am very grateful to the lay leaders and former pastors who
have gone before me and laid the ground work for the parish we are today. We are a different parish today than in 1956 or even in 2006. We are perhaps
a little more diverse, a little more varied in our language, culture, and race, yet we continue to be molded into the ever changing, ever growing body of
Christ. Our community continues to be more universal and more catholic in the truest sense of the word.
That is why it is important for us to move back into the church as soon as possible. As we know, our Church suffered a fire a few months ago and we have
been in much discussion about how we want the Church to look when we return. Like our community we want the Church to reflect some of our changes,
some of the ways we have grown. We are proposing a few changes that honor our past, recognize our present community, and prepare us for the future.
We believe that we can enhance our space and make it even more prayerful and beautiful when we return. I would like to share four basic areas we hope
to enhance and ask for your prayerful and financial support.
The Blessed Sacrament Chapel: St. Monica is a Church designed to emphasize the community gathered around the Eucharist, and for this reason it is
exceptionally simple in its design. We want to keep this as it reflects the life of the parish: alive and filled with people who strive to love each other and
the Lord. However, I feel we need a few improvements. The Blessed Sacrament chapel is not really prominent enough for a Catholic Church. Both the
celebration of the Eucharist and the Eucharist species are central to the Catholic Christian life. The Eucharist is the true presence of Christ, Body, Blood,
Soul, and Divinity. There is a desire to make some changes so that the Chapel where the Tabernacle resides maintains its prayerful space but is more
prominent and visible. After long discussions with our committee and the Archdiocese, it was decided to create a chapel for the Eucharist behind the
sanctuary. This will be the most significant and noticeable change in our church. Additional changes are increasing the size of the sanctuary space and
adding a ramp so it is more accessible to the handicapped.
The Lighting: It has long been commented that our lighting is adequate but perhaps not the ideal look for our Church. Since we are already out of the
Church, we feel this is an opportune time to remove the current lighting grid and replace it with chandelier lighting more appropriate in a place of worship, eliminating any obstructions to the view of the beautiful stained glassed window designed to represent St. Monica. Additionally we want to make
the lighting style consistent in the Church, Narthex, and Daily Mass Chapel.
The Baptismal Font: Our project actually began with discussion of the font. Over time the copper and the wood of the font had begun to wear and it was
beginning to come apart in places. Additionally, over time wood and water are not a great combination. We have designed a new one that will have a
small and a large font, be made of a nice stone, and be in the shape of an Octagon to represent the eighth day in which Jesus rose from the dead. It will
be a little larger and still be able to be used for both infant and adult immersion baptisms.
Sacred Art: There are a few places where we wish to replace or add to the sacred art. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas and so,
while she is important particularly to the Mexican people she is actually the patroness of North and South America and a symbol of devotion for all of us.
We will create a chapel of devotion for her in the former Blessed Sacrament chapel complete with place for candles (to be used carefully) and flowers for
devotion. We are working with the corpus of our old crucifix to create a new larger one that will hang above the altar. Additionally, we are looking for
Stations of the Cross that will be located in the same area but be larger and have stronger images for devotion. Finally, in our devotional niches (the two
back corners of the Church) we would like an image of the Holy family in one corner and an image of our patroness St. Monica and St. Augustine in the
other. We believe that family life is important, and these images honor family as well as Christ and our patroness.
What I am are asking:
First I ask for your prayers. It is important that we stay close to what God wants for our Church community. Ask God to guide me as your pastor, to guide
our staff, and those involved in the project. Secondly, in this spirit of prayer, I am asking for your financial support for this project. Please prayerfully consider what God might be asking you to offer to help us complete this project. The sooner we are able to raise the money the sooner we can begin construction and return to our Church. We currently have over $500,000 pledged toward our overall goal of $1.4 million. So we still need around $900,000
pledged in order to meet our goal. We will formally launch a parish-wide capital campaign to raise the balance needed in May. Please watch for communications about events that will be held at which I will share in more detail about the renovation plans.

La Parroquia Sta. Mónica ha sido una parte vibrante de las comunidades de los municipios de Washington y Pike desde 1956. Somos un grupo

servidos. Estoy muy agradecido con los líderes laicos y pastores anteriores que han estado aquí antes que yo y han puesto el trabajo de tierra para la

vida Cristiana Católica. La Eucaristía es la verdadera presencia de Cristo, Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad. Hay un deseo de hacer algunos cambios para

La Pila Bautismal: Nuestro proyecto comenzó realmente con la discusión de la fuente. Con el tiempo el cobre y la madera de la fuente habían comenzado
a desgastarse y estaba comenzando a desarmarse en algunos lugares. Además, con el tiempo la madera y el agua no son una buena combinación. Hemos
diseñado una nueva que tendrá una fuente pequeña y una grande, hecha de una piedra y en la forma de un octágono que representa el octavo día en
que Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos. Será un poco más grande y todavía pueda ser utilizada para ambos bautismos para niños y de inmersión para
adultos.
Arte Sagrado: Hay pocos lugares donde queremos cambiar o añadir arte sagrado. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe es la patrona de las Américas y aunque
ella es importante especialmente para los mexicanos es realmente la patrona de las Américas tanto del norte y como del sur y es un símbolo de devoción
para todos nosotros. Vamos a crear una capilla de devoción para ella en la antigua Capilla del Santísimo Sacramento con un lugar para velas (para ser
utilizado con cuidado) y flores para devoción. Estamos trabajando con el corpus de nuestro antiguo crucifijo para crear otro más grande que será colgado
sobre el altar. Además, estamos buscando estaciones del Viacrucis que se ubicarán en las mismas zonas pero que sean imágenes de devoción más
grandes y fuertes . Finalmente, en nuestros nichos devocionales (las dos esquinas traseras de la iglesia) queremos una imagen de la Sagrada Familia en
una esquina y una imagen de nuestra patrona Sta. Mónica y San Agustín en el otro. Creemos que la vida familiar es importante, y estas imágenes honran

en ese espíritu de oración, le pido su apoyo financiero para este proyecto. Por favor considere en oración lo que Dios podría pedirle que ofrezca para
ayudarnos a terminar este proyecto. Lo más pronto que podamos recaudar el dinero lo más pronto que podremos empezar a reconstruir y regresar a
nuestra iglesia. Actualmente tenemos más de $500.000 comprometidos para nuestra meta de $ 1,4 millones. Así que todavía tenemos $900.000 por
recaudar para cumplir nuestro objetivo. Se lanzará formalmente una campaña capital en la parroquia para recaudar el dinero necesario en mayo. Por

What is a capital campaign?
In the life of a parish, school or service organization, it is

campaign is basically a concentrated effort to raise
significant funding over a relatively short period of time.
Capital campaigns are usually conducted for one or
more of the following reasons.

For capital improvements or renovations

For new building projects

For debt reduction

For an endowment fund
All capital campaigns in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis
must by approved by the Office of Stewardship, which
offers guidance and advice on best practices for running
a successful campaign.

RCIA CATECHIST
ABOUT THE MINISTRY
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process
by which people can question, search, and inquire into the
Catholic faith. Some are deciding if they are called into the
Catholic Church; others have been Catholic all their lives and
are now interested in discovering what this really means.
Together we witness to the fact that our search for God is a
lifelong journey, a journey we do not make alone, but with
the support and prayer of the whole Church. This journey
leads many to seek full membership in our Church. For others
this journey may not lead to full membership.
The catechist helps introduce the children to Christ and the
Catholic Church, preparing them for fruitful participation in
the Mass, but also for the celebration of Baptism,
Confirmation, and Reconciliation. The children should know
basic prayers and have an attitude of prayerfulness, as well as
an acquaintance of other Christians and a love for many of the
saints before their initiation takes place. It is a big task!
SPIRITUAL GIFTS REQUIRED: Faithful to daily prayer;
Authentic witness to faith; Attentive to God and others; love
for Catholic Faith; Love for children and a desire to share faith
with them
SKILLS REQUIRED: Knowledge of Church teaching; Teaching
skills for specific age group for changing hearts, minds, and
behavior; Motivation Skills; Ability to work as part of a team
TIME COMMITMENT: Certification/training; Monthly team
meeting on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 7-9 pm;
Preparation time for weekly classes, 2 hours per week

SPRED Students: Congratulations to our SPRED students
Christian Leonardo, Kevin Garcia and Javier Silva-Flores!
They received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the
Archdiocesan SPRED Mass on April 3. Christian and Kevin
also received their First Holy Communion at the same
Mass. May they always remain close to Jesus!
First Communion Retreat: On Saturday, April 23 our 240
First Communion candidates and their parent/parents will
attend a retreat at St. Monica from 9:00 am—12:00 pm. This
is ONLY for the candidates and not siblings. Please bring your
banner and First Communion picture order form—with
payment—for the picture. Invitations were sent to homes. If

First Communion Practices:
Please see the schedule for First Communion practices on

Confirmation Registration: 7th and 8th graders who will be
preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this fall
must have their registration form and a copy of their
baptism certificate turned in to the Religious Education
Office by Sunday, April 17. You should have received a
packet with this materiel after the parent meeting in
March. If you did not receive an info packet or have any

St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Drop Box
Parishioners who want to donate clothing to help the poor
can use the new St. Vincent de Paul drop box located in the
southeast corner of the parking lot just east of the
gym. Clothing should be clean and in good shape (no stains
or tears) and must be in heavy-duty bags that are tied
shut. Non-clothing, like toys and household items, are not
appropriate for the clothing drop box. Thank you for your
donations in help the poor!

Catholic Home Missions Collection Next
Weekend
The Catholic Home Missions collection will take place next
weekend. Many dioceses right here in the United States do
not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve
their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions.
The Catholic Home Missions Appeal, which will take place
this weekend in the second collection, supports these
dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary
education and lay ministry training. Please be generous in
this appeal and share your resources to strengthen the
Church at home. To learn more about home missions
funding and who the appeal helps, please visit

How Can We as Catholics Help Those in
Prison?
In honor of the Year of Mercy instituted by Pope Francis, the
St. Monica Social Justice Ministry is hosting a
presentation, How Can We as Catholics Help Those in
Prison? This 3-part presentation will held on Monday, April
25 from 7:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. in the St. Augustine Room.
Donna Keough, a member of the Board of Directors of the
Indiana Abolition Coalition, will present “Indiana's Death
Penalty: Myth vs. Reality"; Anna Brown-Mitchell and Ed
Mitchell of the St. Monica Kairos Prison Ministry will provide
information on how you can help those in prison; and Ed
Witulski will speak about how you can help those who are
reentering society after serving time in prison. Please join

Join us for Marriage in Focus
Marriage in Focus is a program at St. Monica to enable
engaged and married couples to share their sacramental
marriage through faith, fellowship, and food. The event
consists of a pitch-in dinner, followed by a speaker. Our next
event is Saturday, May 14 following the 5pm Mass in the

Canadian Pilgrimage in August
Come Visit the Shrines of Canada with Fr. Michael
Keucher of Our Lady of the Greenwood as chaplain. This
scenic pilgrimage is set for the dates of August 1-5 and
includes Montreal and Quebec. Among the highlights will
be the world-renowned St. Joseph Oratory Shrine in
Montreal and Our Lady of the Cape and the Shrine of St.
Anne de Beaupre in Quebec. The Holy Doors for all the
Americas; Notre Dame de Quebec, Montmorency Falls and
the Jerusalem Cyclorama are only part of this journey.

CATEQUISTA PARA RICA
ACERCA DEL MINISTERIO
El Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (RICA) es el proceso
mediante el cual las personas pueden cuestionar, buscar e
investigar sobre la fe Católica. Algunos están decidiendo si tienen
el llamado a la Iglesia Católica; otros han sido Católicos toda su
vida y ahora están interesados en descubrir lo que realmente
significa. Juntos somos testigos de que el hecho de que nuestra
búsqueda de Dios es una jornada para toda la vida, una jornada
que no hacemos solos, sino con el apoyo y la oración de toda la
Iglesia. Esta jornada lleva a muchos a buscar ser miembros en
nuestra iglesia. El catequista de RICA es un compañero y guía,
conecta al candidato a la comunidad de la parroquia y a la iglesia.
Él le da la bienvenida de Rica patrocinador el candidato
continuamente, empieza a conocer al candidato, ayuda a la
candidata a mantenerse en contacto cuando él/ella pierde
sesiones o es prepararse para un rito y ayuda al candidato
comienza a ver a Dios en el trabajo en su vida y responder en fe.
El catequista ayuda a introducir a los niños a Cristo y la Iglesia
Católica, preparándolos no solamente para la fructífera
participación en la Misa, sino también para la celebración del
Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Reconciliación. Los niños deben
saber oraciones básicas y tener una actitud de oración, así como
el conocer a otros Cristianos y un amor para muchos de los
Santos antes de que su iniciación se lleve a cabo. ¡Es una gran
tarea!
DONES ESPIRITUALES REQUERIDOS: Fidelidad a la oración diaria;
Auténtico testimonio de fe; entregado a Dios y otros; amor por la
Fe Católica; Amor por los niños y un deseo de compartir la fe con
ellos
HABILIDADES REQUERIDAS: Conocimiento de las enseñanzas de
la Iglesia; capacitación para enseñar a grupos de edad específica
para cambiar corazones, mentes y comportamiento; habilidades
de motivación; capacidad de trabajar como parte de un equipo

mensual del equipo en el 4 º martes de cada mes, de 7-9 pm;
tiempo de preparación para las clases semanales, 2 horas a la

La Segunda Colecta del Próximo Fin de Semana
es para Las Misiones Católicas Locales
El próximo fin de semana tendremos el Llamado a las
Misiones Católicas. Muchas diócesis, aquí mismo, en los
Estados Unidos no cuentan con suficientes sacerdotes y
ministros laicos capacitados para servir en sus parroquias. A
estas diócesis se les conoce como diócesis misioneras. El
Llamado para las Misiones Católicas, que se realizará durante
la segunda colecta este fin de semana, apoya a estas diócesis
otorgándoles fondos para los ministerios básicos, incluyendo
la educación de seminaristas y la capacitación para el
ministerio laico. Por favor, sean generosos en este llamado y
compartan sus recursos para fortalecer la Iglesia local. Para

Estudiantes de SPRED: ¡Felicidades a nuestros estudiantes de SPRED Christian Leonardo, Kevin García y
Javier Silva-Flores! Ellos recibieron el Sacramento de la

Caja para Donar Ropa de San Vicente de Paul
Los feligreses que quieran donar ropa para ayudar a los pobres
pueden usar la caja de San Vicente de Paul localizada en la
esquina suroeste del estacionamiento cerca del gimnasio. La
ropa debe de estar limpia y en buenas condiciones (sin
manchas o rotas) y deben de ponerlas en bolsas de plástico
resistentes y amarrarlas. Otros artículos, como juguetes y
artículos para el hogar, no son para dejar en esta caja.

Francisco, el Ministerio de Justicia Social de Sta. Mónica
tendrá la presentación, ¿Cómo Nosotros Como Católicos
Podemos Ayudar a Quienes se Encuentran en la Cárcel? Nos
reuniremos el lunes, 25 de abril a las 7:00-8:30 p.m. en el
Salón San Agustín. Esta será una presentación de 3-partes.
Donna Keough de Indiana Abolition Coalition hará la
presentación acerca de la pena de muerte; Anna BrownMitchell y Ed Mitchell del Ministerio de la Prisión Kairos de

would you like to add or subtract from it based
on this week’s Gospel?
Read Chapter 10 of the USCCA.
Practice the FAITH:

Learn the song, “The Lord is My Shepherd” –
and sing it at meals daily with your family
Finish writing a RULE for yourself – and with
your family. Make a stewardship plan that
spells out:
 How and when you will pray individually or
as a family
 How and when you will pray with the Church
– and be part of the Church’s ministry
 How much money you will give to the
Church and to the poor
 How you will share all the gifts God has
given you – for the GLORY of His NAME

Durante décadas, el cuidado por los demás y el amor a
tejer se han combinado en un Ministerio de Oración para
llegar a quienes necesitan consuelo. Estamos muy
contentos de empezar las bendiciones de un Ministerio
de Tejiendo & Orando aquí en Santa Mónica los martes a
las 10:00 empezando en mayo y por las noches
empezando en junio.
Muchas bendiciones son tejidas en cada chal. Antes de
empezar a tejer oramos por la persona que la va a recibir
y se continúa orando por sus intenciones durante su
creación. Se ofrece una oración de parte de todo el
Ministerio para aquellos que recibirán cada chal tejido
con gancho o con aguja antes de entregarse.
Los chales y mantas se donan a quienes están pasando
por una pérdida o enfermedad o simplemente necesitan
consuelo. La participación en este Ministerio ofrece
sanación y consuelo para los creadores, también. ¡Se ha
demostrado que el tejer con aguja o gancho ofrece
beneficios curativos!
¡Los Principiantes son Bienvenidos! ¡Este es un
Ministerio de oración, no de perfección! Si usted tiene
poca o ninguna experiencia, estamos encantados de
ayudarle o enseñarle a tejer.
Traiga su propio estambre, agujas, ganchos y patrones.
O, si es nuevo, puede pedir prestados los nuestros hasta
que obtenga un patrón y esté listo para empezar por su
cuenta.
