“The Lord your God ... fed you with manna, which you did not
know” (Dt 8:2-3).
These words from Deuteronomy make reference to the history of the
Israelites, whom God led out of Egypt, out of slavery, and for 40 years
led through the desert toward the promised land. Once established on
the land, the Chosen People attain a certain autonomy, a certain
wellbeing, and run the risk of forgetting the harrowing events of the
past, overcome thanks to God’s intervention and to his infinite
goodness. And so the Scriptures urge the people to recall, to
remember, to memorize, the entire walk through the desert, in times of
famine and desperation. The command of Moses is to return to the
basics, to the experience of total dependence on God, when survival
was placed in his hands, so the people would understand that “man
does not live by bread alone, but that man lives by everything that
proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord” (Dt 8:3).
Besides physical hunger, man experiences another hunger, a hunger
that cannot be satiated with ordinary food. It’s a hunger for life, a
hunger for love, a hunger for eternity. And the sign of manna — like
the entire experience of Exodus — also contains in itself this
dimension: it was the symbol of a food that satisfies this deep human
hunger. Jesus gives us this food, rather, He himself is the living
bread that gives life to the world (cf. Jn 6:51). His Body is the true food
in the form of bread; his Blood is the true drink in the form of wine. It
isn’t simple nourishment to satisfy the body, like manna; the Body of
Christ is the bread of the last times, capable of giving life, eternal life,
because this bread is made of love.
The Eucharist communicates the Lord’s love for us: a love so great that
it nourishes us with Himself; a freely given love, always available to
every person who hungers and needs to regenerate his own strength. To
live the experience of faith means to allow oneself to be nourished by
the Lord and to build one’s own existence not with material goods but
with the reality that does not perish: the gifts of God, his Word and his
Body.
If we look around, we realize that there are so many offers of
food which do not come from the Lord and which appear to be more
satisfying. Some nourish themselves with money, others with success
and vanity, others with power and pride. But the food that truly
nourishes and satiates us is only that which the Lord gives us! The food
the Lord offers us is different from other food, and perhaps it doesn’t
seem as flavourful to us as certain other dishes the world offers us. So
we dream of other dishes, like the Hebrews in the desert, who longed
for the meat and onions they ate in Egypt, but forgot that they had
eaten those meals at the table of slavery. In those moments of
temptation, they had a memory, but a sick memory, a selective
memory. A slave memory, not a free one.
We, today, may ask ourselves: what about me? Where do I want to
eat? At which table to I want to be nourished? At the Lord’s table? Or
do I dream about eating flavourful foods, but in slavery? Moreover, we
may ask ourselves: what do I recall? The Lord who saves me, or the
garlic and onions of slavery? Which recollection satiates my soul?
The Father tells us: “I fed you with manna, which you did not know”.
Let us recover this memory. This is the task, to recover that memory.
And let us learn to recognize the false bread that deceives and corrupts,
because it comes from selfishness, from self-reliance and from sin.
Soon, in the procession, we will follow Jesus truly present in the
Eucharist. The Host is our manna, through which the Lord gives
himself to us. We turn to Him with faith: Jesus, defend us from the
temptation of worldly food which enslaves us, tainted food; purify our
memory, so it isn’t imprisoned in selfish and worldly selectivity, but
that it may be a living memory of your presence throughout the history
of your people, a memory that makes a “monument” of your gesture of
redeeming love. Amen.

Estas palabras del Deuteronomio hacen referencia a la historia de Israel,
que Dios hizo salir de Egipto, de la condición de esclavitud, y durante
cuarenta años guió por el desierto hacia la tierra prometida. El pueblo
elegido, una vez establecido en la tierra, alcanzó cierta autonomía, un
cierto bienestar, y corrió el riesgo de olvidar los tristes acontecimientos
del pasado, superados gracias a la intervención de Dios y a su infinita
bondad. Así pues, las Escrituras exhortan a recordar, a hacer memoria de
todo el camino recorrido en el desierto, en el tiempo de la carestía y del
desaliento. La invitación es volver a lo esencial, a la experiencia de la
total dependencia de Dios, cuando la supervivencia estaba confiada a su
mano, para que el hombre comprendiera que «no sólo de pan vive el
hombre, sino... de todo cuanto sale de la boca de Dios» (Dt 8,3).
Además del hambre físico, el hombre lleva en sí otro hambre, un hambre
que no puede ser saciado con el alimento ordinario. Es hambre de vida,
hambre de amor, hambre de eternidad. Y el signo del maná —como toda
la experiencia del éxodo— contenía en sí también esta dimensión: era
figura de un alimento que satisface esta profunda hambre que hay en el
hombre. Jesús nos da este alimento, es más, es Él mismo el pan vivo que
da la vida al mundo (cf. Jn 6, 51). Su Cuerpo es el verdadero alimento
bajo la especie del pan; su Sangre es la verdadera bebida bajo la especie
del vino. No es un simple alimento con el cual saciar nuestro cuerpo,
como el maná; el Cuerpo de Cristo es el pan de los últimos tiempos,
capaz de dar vida, y vida eterna, porque la esencia de este pan es el
Amor.
En la Eucaristía se comunica el amor del Señor por nosotros: un amor
tan grande que nos nutre de sí mismo; un amor gratuito, siempre a
disposición de toda persona hambrienta y necesitada de regenerar las
propias fuerzas. Vivir la experiencia de la fe significa dejarse alimentar
por el Señor y construir la propia existencia no sobre los bienes
materiales, sino sobre la realidad que no perece: los dones de Dios, su
Palabra y su Cuerpo.
Si miramos a nuestro alrededor, nos damos cuenta de que existen muchas
ofertas de alimento que no vienen del Señor y que aparentemente
satisfacen más. Algunos se nutren con el dinero, otros con el éxito y la
vanidad, otros con el poder y el orgullo. Pero el alimento que nos nutre
verdaderamente y que nos sacia es sólo el que nos da el Señor. El
alimento que nos ofrece el Señor es distinto de los demás, y tal vez no
nos parece tan gustoso como ciertas comidas que nos ofrece el mundo.
Entonces soñamos con otras comidas, como los judíos en el desierto, que
añoraban la carne y las cebollas que comían en Egipto, pero olvidaban
que esos alimentos los comían en la mesa de la esclavitud. Ellos, en esos
momentos de tentación, tenían memoria, pero una memoria enferma, una
memoria selectiva. Una memoria esclava, no libre.
Cada uno de nosotros, hoy, puede preguntarse: ¿y yo? ¿Dónde quiero
comer? ¿En qué mesa quiero alimentarme? ¿En la mesa del Señor? ¿O
sueño con comer manjares gustosos, pero en la esclavitud? Además, cada
uno de nosotros puede preguntarse: ¿cuál es mi memoria? ¿La del Señor
que me salva, o la del ajo y las cebollas de la esclavitud? ¿Con qué
memoria sacio mi alma?
El Padre nos dice: «Te he alimentado con el maná que tú no conocías».
Recuperemos la memoria. Esta es la tarea, recuperar la memoria. Y
aprendamos a reconocer el pan falso que engaña y corrompe, porque es
fruto del egoísmo, de la autosuficiencia y del pecado.
Dentro de poco, en la procesión, seguiremos a Jesús realmente presente
en la Eucaristía. La Hostia es nuestro maná, mediante la cual el Señor se
nos da a sí mismo. A Él nos dirigimos con confianza: Jesús, defiéndenos
de las tentaciones del alimento mundano que nos hace esclavos, alimento
envenenado; purifica nuestra memoria, a fin de que no permanezca
prisionera en la selectividad egoísta y mundana, sino que sea memoria
viva de tu presencia a lo largo de la historia de tu pueblo, memoria que
se hace «memorial» de tu gesto de amor redentor. Amén. vatican.va
