THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17
Through Moses, God passed on the commandments he
wished all people to follow. He tells us not to worship
idols or take the name of the Lord in vain. All the laws
God gave to us, if followed, would ensure that we could
live in peace and harmony with one another as he had
planned.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25
Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ is the power and the
wisdom of God. Although they claimed to possess wisdom, “God’s folly is wiser than men, and his weakness is
more powerful than men.”
Gospel: John 2:13-25
Jesus went to the temple of Jerusalem to find merchants
there selling sheep and doves. He knocked over their tables and drove the animals away. The merchants asked
him for a sign that he was authorized to do this. He told
them to “destroy this temple (referring to his body) and in
three days I will raise it up.” The merchants misunderstood, and did not believe he could rebuild in three days
what had taken nearly 50 years to build. Still many
believed in him, after seeing the miracles he had performed.

will start with solemn vespers in the Church. Following we will have dinner and music. The seminarians

MARRIAGE ANNIVERSARY LITURGIES
We are once again preparing the annual tradition of
honoring those couples in our Archdiocese who will
be celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty years of
Christian Marriage in the year 2015. These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Archbishop John
J. Myers in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart
in Newark as Follows:
April 19, 2015 at 3:00PM, 50 years.
May 3, 2015 at 3:00PM, 25 years and 5 years.

PALM SUNDAY PROCESSION
All parishioners are invited to take part
in our Palm Procession on the streets of
our town in a public manifestation of
faith on Saturday, March 28th. The procession will start at 4 PM in the plaza at
the corner of Park Ave. and Front St. to
finish with the Mass which will be at
5PM that day instead of the regular 5:30 PM time.
ST. PATRICK’S DAY BREAKFAST
We invite all to participate at a breakfast
after the 7:45 AM Mass to celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 15th in the
Marian Room. The church will offer coffee. Please bring some home-made food.
ORIENTATION SESSIONS FOR 20152016 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM REGISTRATION
Registration for the new Religious Education Course
2015-2016 will start on June 1 2015. In order to register your child you have to attend one of the orientation meetings that will be held in April (8 in English,
15, 22, 29 in Spanish, 6:30-7:30 PM). All the details
about the registration will be given at these orientation sessions. These orientations are for parents only
(no children). Please, sign up for one of the orientation sessions in the back of the church or coming to
the parish office during office hours (Mon-Fri 9 AM
– 5 PM).
GODPARENTS FOR CONFIRMATION
The last day to present godparents for confirmation will
be April 30. These are the requirements for godparents:
to be at least 16 years old;
to be single or married through the Catholic
Church;
to have received the three Sacraments of Initiation
(Baptism, Communion, Confirmation);
to Attend Mass weekly and approach the sacrament of communion frequently and reconciliation regularly;
to be registered in a parish (for St. Mary’s parishioners at least 2 months of registration are required).
The Church only allows 1 (one) godparent for Confirmation.

ORIENTACIONES PARA LA REGISTRACION EN EL PROGRAMA DE EDUCACION RELIGIOSA 2015-2016
Gracias a las tantas familias que han
contribuido ya con el Llamado Anual
del Arzobispo! Esta es una oportunidad perfecta para reflexionar sobre la
generosidad de Dios hacia nosotros.
Nuestra Iglesia de Newark ve a Dios
en los cientos de miles de personas a
las que sirve al darles enseñanza, cobijo y cuidando a
todos los que vienen a ella por ayuda. Sólo podemos
ayudar a través de su generosidad. Les animamos a
contribuir y así, ayudar al necesitado.
La registración para el nuevo curso de Educación Religiosa 2015-2016 empezará el 1 de junio. Para registrar a su
hijo/a Ud. tiene que asistir a una de las orientaciones que
se darán en el mes de abril (8 en Inglés; 15, 22, 29 en español 6:30-7:30 PM). Todos los detalles necesarios para registrase se darán en estas sesiones de orientación. Estas
orientaciones son para los padres solamente (no niños).
Por favor, inscríbanse a las orientaciones al fondo de la
iglesia o viniendo a la oficina parroquial durante horas de
oficina (Lunes-Viernes 9 AM – 5 PM).

ANIVERSARIO DE BODAS
El último día para presentar los padrinos de confirmación
será el 30 de abril. Estos son los requisitos para los padrinos:
que tener por lo menos 16 años de edad;
ser solteros o casados por la Iglesia Católica;
haber recibido los tres sacramentos de iniciación
(Bautismo, Comunión, Confirmación);
asistir a la misa semanal y acercarse al sacramento de
la comunión frecuentemente y al de la reconciliación con regularidad;
estar registrado en una parroquia (para los feligreses
de Santa María se requieren por lo menos 2 meses
de registración).
La Iglesia Católica permite sólo un padrino/madrina de
Confirmación.
Una vez más, estamos preparando
la tradición anual de honrar
aquellas parejas en nuestra Arquidiócesis que celebrarán cinco,
veinticinco y cincuenta años de
Matrimonio Cristiano en el año 2015. Estas liturgias
de aniversario serán celebradas por el Arzobispo
John J. Myers en la Catedral Basílica Sagrado Corazón, en Newark en las fechas siguientes: Abril 19, a
las 3PM, cincuenta años. Mayo 3, a las 3PM, veinticinco y cinco años. Para registrarse, llamar a la

The Grandparents
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today’s catechesis and that of next Wednesday will be
dedicated to the elderly who, in the realm of the family,
are the grandparents. Today we will reflect on the present problematic condition of the elderly and, next time,
more positively, on the vocation contained in this age of
life.
Thanks to the progress in medicine, life has lengthened:
society, however, has not “enlarged” to life! The number
of elderly has multiplied, but our societies have not organized themselves sufficiently to give them a place,
with just respect and concrete consideration for their fragility and dignity. While we are young, we are induced
to ignore old age, as if it were a sickness to avoid. Then,
when we become old, especially if we are poor, sick or
alone, we experience the lacunae of a society planned for
efficiency that, consequently, ignores the elderly. And
the elderly are richness; they cannot be ignored.
During a visit to a home for the elderly, Benedict XVI
used clear and prophetic words: “The quality of a society, I would like to say of a civilization, is also judged by
the way the elderly are treated and the place reserved for
them in common living” (November 12, 2012). It’s true,
attention to the elderly makes the difference in a civilization. In a civilization, is there attention to the elderly? Is
there a place for the elderly? If so, this civilization will
go forward because it respects the wisdom of the elderly. In a civilization where there is no place for the elderly, where they are discarded because they create problems, such a society bears in it the virus of death.
In the West, scholars present the currrent century as the
century of growing old: children decrease and the elderly increase. This imbalance calls us into question, more
than that, it is a great challenge for contemporary society. A certain culture of profit also insists on making the
elderly appear as a weight, a “useless load.” Not only do
they not produce, it believes, they are a load. In conclusion, as a result of thinking this way, they are discarded.
It is ugly to see discarded elderly. It is a sin. No one
dares to say it openly, but it is done! There is something
vile in that addiction to the disposable culture. We are
accustomed to discard people. We want to eliminate our
growing fear of weakness and vulnerability but in doing
so, we increase the anguish of the elderly of not being
tolerated and of being abandoned.

Los Abuelos
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
la catequesis de hoy y la del próximo miércoles estarán
dedicadas a los ancianos, que, en el ámbito de la familia,
son los abuelos. Hoy reflexionamos sobre la problemática
condición actual de los ancianos, y la próxima vez, más en
positivo, sobre la vocación contenida en esta edad de la
vida.
Gracias a los progresos de la medicina la vida se ha
alargado: la sociedad, sin embargo, ¡no se ‘ensanchado' a la
vida! El número de los ancianos se ha multiplicado, pero
nuestras sociedades no se han organizado lo bastante para
hacerles sitio, con justo respeto y concreta consideración
para su fragilidad y dignidad. Mientras somos jóvenes, se
nos induce a ignorar la vejez, como si fuera una enfermedad de la que estar lejos; cuando después nos hacemos
ancianos, especialmente si somos pobres, estamos enfermos o solos, experimentamos las lagunas de una sociedad
programada en la eficiencia, que consecuentemente ignora
a los ancianos. Y los ancianos son una riqueza, no se
pueden ignorar.
Benedicto XVI, visitando un asilo, usó palabras claras y
proféticas: “La calidad de una sociedad, quisiera decir de
una civilización, se juzga también por cómo se trata a los
ancianos y del lugar reservado para ellos en el vivir
común” (12 novembre 2012). Es verdad, la atención a los
ancianos hace la diferencia de una civilización. En una civilización, ¿hay atención al anciano? ¿Hay sitio para el anciano? Esta civilización irá adelante porque sabe respetar
la sabiduría de los ancianos. En una civilización que no
hay sitio para los ancianos, son descartados porque crean
problemas, esta sociedad lleva consigo el virus de la muerte.
En Occidente, los estudiosos presentan el siglo actual como el siglo del envejecimiento: los hijos disminuyen, los
ancianos aumentan. Este desequilibrio nos interpela, es
más, es un gran desafío para la sociedad contemporánea.
Incluso una cierta cultura del lucro insiste en el hacer
aparecer a los ancianos como un peso, un “lastre”. No solo
no producen, piensa, sino que son una carga: en conclusión, por ese resultado de pensar así, son descartados.
Es feo ver a los ancianos descartados. Es pecado. No se osa
decirlo abiertamente, ¡pero se hace! Hay algo vil en esta
adicción a la cultura del descarte. Estamos acostumbrados
a descartar gente. Queremos eliminar nuestro creciente
miedo a la debilidad y la vulnerabilidad; pero haciéndolo
así aumentan en los ancianos la angustia de ser mal tolerados y abandonados.
