May Devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary refer to special Marian devotions held in
the Catholic faith during the month of May, honoring the Virgin Mary as "the Queen
of May".

The origin of the conventional May devotion is still relatively unknown. It is certain
that this form of Marian devotion began in Italy, around 1739. From Italy, May devotions soon spread to France and eventually around the Roman Catholic world in
the 19th century.
In his 1965 encyclical, Mense Maio, Pope Paul VI identified the month of May as an
opportune time to incorporate special prayers for peace into traditional May devotions. Even though, there is no firm structure as to the content of May devotion, it
usually includes the singing of Marian anthems, readings from scriptures, and a sermon. In the Philippines and other countries Mary is greeted with the Flowers of
May. The communities congregate in the afternoons to pray the rosary, offer flowers to the Virgin and share homemade delicacies and snacks.
"May Crowning" is a traditional Roman Catholic ritual that occurs in the month of
May as a part of the devotions. Parishes and private groups often process and crown
an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary with flowers. The Blessed Virgin Mary is ceremonially crowned to signify her as a Queen of Heaven and the Mother of God. This
rite also offers the Church the opportunity to reflect on Mary’s role in the history of
salvation.

Devociones de Mayo a la Santísima Virgen María
Las devociones de Mayo a la Virgen María se refieren a las devociones Marianas
especiales que se realizan en la fe católica durante el mes de Mayo, en honor a la

The Rosary is a prayer dedicated to Mary. When
we pray the rosary we meditate on the principal
events or mysteries in the history of our salvation.
Also you may read and meditate on Mary’s prayer,
the Magnificat (Luke 1: 46-55). Try reading the
Magnificat each day. A different word or phrase
may touch your heart every time.
El Rosario es una oración dedicada a María. Cuando rezamos el rosario, meditamos ciertos eventos o misterios importantes en la historia de nuestra salvación. También usted
puede Leer y meditar la oración de María, la Magníficat

CANDIDATOS PARA EL TÉRMINO 2016
The Parish Council is comprised of parishioners who
are representative of the parish on all levels (ethnic,
economic, gender, age, etc.). Our role is to advise the
pastor and the staff about matters pertaining to and the
mission of the parish community. Members serve for a
three year term and may be re-nominated for a second
term.
El Consejo Parroquial es un grupo de diversos individuos
que representan a la parroquia en todos los niveles (étnico,
económico, genero, edad, etc.). Nuestro papel es aconsejar
al pastor y al personal de la parroquia en asuntos pertinentes a la vida y a la misión de la comunidad parroquial. Los
miembros generalmente sirven un termino de tres años y
pueden ser re-nominados para un segundo termino.
Currently we seek to fill positions for the Pastoral year
which begins in September 2016. The names of active
and interested parishioners who would best serve the
needs of our community are submitted to the full Council for consideration and selection. We ask that you
begin to consider parishioners you believe could serve
as Council Members. If you would like to submit the
name of someone who you think would make a good
Parish Council Member, or you would like to submit
your own name, please complete the nomination form
located at the rear of the church and return it to the basket provided or the Parish Office by May 10th.

For the past few weeks, our parish has actively
been conducting the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal. As a sign of gratitude for our gifts, we

the 2016 Cardinal’s Appeal.

STATEN ISLAND IS CHOSEN!
Staten Island has been chosen as one of the ten sites
included in the premiere tour of the documentary,
“Apparition Hill!” This film follows the journey of 7
believers and non-believers as they first encounter
the site of the Blessed Mother’s appearance to six
visionaries in Medjugorje and the effects on those
pilgrims’ lives. Monday, May 16 at 7 PM, in the Stadium 16 Theater on Forest Avenue. Tickets are $20
each and need to be purchased in advance. Please
