Pope Saint John Paul II, born Karol Józef Wojtyła (18 May 1920 ‒ 2 April
2005), also known as Saint John Paul the Great, was pope of the Catholic
Church from 16 October 1978 until his death on 2 April 2005. He was the
second longest-serving pope in modern history after Pope Pius IX. Born in
Poland, John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope since the Dutch Pope
Adrian VI who served from 1522 to 1523.

John Paul II significantly improved the Catholic Church's relations with Judaism, Islam,
the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion.
He was one of the most travelled world leaders in history. As part of his special emphasis on the universal call to holiness, he beatified 1,340 people and canonized
483 saints.
John Paul II's cause for canonization commenced in 2005 one month after his death
with the traditional five-year waiting period waived. On December 19, 2009, John
Paul II was proclaimed Venerable by his successor Pope Benedict XVI and was beatified on 1 May 2011 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed one miracle to him, the healing of a French nun from Parkinson's disease. A second miracle,
attributed to the late pope, was approved on 2 July 2013 and confirmed by Pope Francis two days later. John Paul II was canonized on 27 April 2014, alongside Pope John
XXIII. His feast day is not celebrated on the date of his death as is usual, but on the
anniversary of his papal inauguration, October 22, 1978.

La causa para la canonización de Juan Pablo II se inició en el 2005, un mes después de su
muerte con el tradicional período de cinco años de espera omitido. El 19 de Diciembre del 2009,
Juan Pablo II fue proclamado Venerable, por su sucesor el Papa Benedicto XVI y fue beatificado el 1 de Mayo del 2011 después de la Congregación para las Causas de los Santos se le
atribuyó un milagro, la curación de una monja francesa de la enfermedad de Parkinson. Un
segundo milagro, atribuido al fallecido Papa, fue aprobado el 2 de Julio del 2013 y confirmado
por el Papa Francisco dos días después. Juan Pablo II fue canonizado el 27 de Abril del 2014,
junto con el Papa Juan XXIII. El día de su fiesta no se celebra en la fecha de su muerte como
es habitual, sino en el aniversario de su toma de posesión como Papa, 22 de Octubre de 1978.

World Mission Sunday
This Weekend, October 17-18
A Second Collection to support the
missionary work of the Society of the
Propagation of the Faith
The Catholic Church is a missionary church. Although we often think of the missions in foreign
lands, in reality each one of us becomes a missionary at Baptism. We are called to share our
Catholic faith with others.
The needs of the church in the developing world
are many. The church is growing in Africa and
parts of Asia. The church of Latin America, traditionally Catholic countries, needs your prayers
and financial support to continue its work.
Men and women, religious and lay, go from our
country to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to
peoples throughout the world. They also help
people who live in poor situations to improve
their lives. We thank you for your support to the
Missions in next weekend’s second collection.
Social Action Committee News
The Social Action Committee is looking
for a physically able man who is willing
to volunteer at the Food Pantry a few
hours during the week to accept and pick
up deliveries. This would entail helping
out a few times a month. If you are able
to help please call the parish office and
leave your name and phone number.

Este Fin de Semana, 17 y 18 de Octubre Habrá una
Segunda Colecta para apoyar el trabajo misionero
de la Sociedad de Propagación de Fe
La Iglesia Católica es una iglesia misionera. Aunque a
menudo creemos en las misiones en tierras extranjeras,
en la realidad, cada uno de nosotros nos convertimos
en misioneros al ser bautizados. Somos llamados a
compartir nuestra fe católica con los demás.
Las necesidades de la iglesia en el mundo en desarrollo son muchas. La iglesia está creciendo en África y
partes de Asia. La iglesia de Latino América, países
tradicionalmente católicos, necesitan sus oraciones y
apoyo financiero para continuar sus trabajos.

a través del mundo. Ellos también ayudan a personas

Fall is already here and the holidays are quickly approaching. Thanksgiving is November 26.

The Social Action Committee is already preparing for
the holiday. The Thanksgiving menus will be put out
on October 24. Distribution of holiday food will be on
November 7, 14, and 21.

Bereavement Support Group
If you or another adult you know has experienced the loss of
a loved one, know that the Parish of St. Peter-Assumption/
St. Paul acknowledges this to be a painful time for you. To
assist you through the grieving process, each Thursday
night in October, at 7:00 PM, a support group will meet at
145 Clinton Ave. where you can share your concerns and
feelings. You need not be a parishioner to attend. We just

Assisted Suicide Training Conference
Saturday, November 7,
St. Piux X Church in Albany
the NYS Catholic Conference will hold a training conference
for Catholics on how to help stop doctor-assisted suicide.
The conference, which will be held at St. Pius X Church
Parish Hall in Loudonville from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM, will
feature inspirational speakers, educational information and a
welcome by Albany Bishop Edward Scharfenberger. Cost is
$10, which includes lunch and all materials. To make it easier for some to attend, we have organized a bus from the
Archdiocese. The cost of this bus will be $30 per person .
