Thoughts from our Pastor
Rev. John P. Broheimer
During Lent we take the time to look at our
sinfulness and bad habits so that we can
through the grace of God embrace better holiness and good habits. One was to do this is to
reflect on the Seven Deadly Sins and their opposing virtues. These are seven ways that we
humans tend to sin. They are general categories
from which so many others sins come. By looking at a root
of our sins, we can better be aware of their presence in our
lives and allow God to supplant them with virtue and grace.
Pride – an unrestrained and improper estimation of our own
worth. Pride is considered the most serious of the seven
sins. It leads to all the other capital sins. This disordered
love of self leads us to be unwilling to admit fault and weakness, to judging and despising our neighbors and their successes. This sin leads us to refuse to submit to God’s authority. The opposite virtue is humility, a true sense of our
worth before God.
Avarice (greed) – a disordered love for material things. This
leads us to make things and not God the center of our lives
rather than seeing material things as a means to serve God
and neighbor. The opposite virtue is generosity or charity
toward God and neighbor.
Envy – a sadness when others succeed (or a happiness when
others fail). Envy is not the same as the possessiveness of
jealousy. Envy is pure misery to the one who commits it.
The opposite virtue is admiration or kindness for others
when they succeed (or sympathy for others when they fail).
Wrath – the desire for revenge on others when it is not our
place to sit in judgment. God alone is the Just Judge; we
must trust that he will punish the wicked and reward the
just. This sin leads to holding grudges and being slow to
forgive. The opposite virtue is forgiveness.
Lust – an inordinate craving to satisfy sexual desires. God is
the author of human sexuality; he has decided that this great
gift is to be used only within marriage. Any use of this gift
outside marriage is sinful. This sin leads us to treat others as
mere objects of our desires rather than with respect. The
opposite virtue is chastity which frees us from the burdens
of the flesh to live a generous and temperate life.
Gluttony – an inordinate desire for food and drink. It’s not
a sin to eat and drink well and to enjoy it. It is a sin to eat
and drink purely out of a desire to gratify our earthly desires.
This sin can lead us to numb our hunger and thirst for God
who is the only One who can satisfy our hearts. The opposing virtue is temperance or self-restraint.
IV Sunday of Lent
Sloth (apathy) – spiritual laziness. This sin leads us to say
about any number of important things in our lives: “I don’t
care.” When we see that a life of holiness is difficult, this sin
leads us to not want to make a good effort on our journey
to the Kingdom. In this sin we neglect our duties before
God and neighbor, and we become undisciplined. The opposing virtue is zeal or diligence in our duties.

The Sacrament of Penance (Confession)
is offered on the
 Thursdays of Lent from 5:30 pm7:00 pm,
 Saturdays 4:00 pm-4:45 pm, and
 half an hour before each Mass.
Please do not wait until Holy Week
for Confession.
Stations of the Cross
Fridays of Lent (through March
18) - walk with Jesus and Mary
as He carries the Cross from
Jerusalem to Mount Golgotha.
Stations of the Cross are offered
at 5:30 pm in English (with
Eucharistic Benediction), and at
7:00 pm in Spanish. A plenary
indulgence may be granted
under the usual conditions.
Abstinence and Fasting
 All Catholics 14 years of age and older are required to
refrain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and every
Friday in Lent as a sacrificial penance.
 All Catholics aged 18 to 59 are required to fast on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting includes one regular meal plus two small meals per day, with no food in
between the meals.
 Dispensations for reasons of health or nursing may be given, but
you must speak with Fr. Broheimer.

Pensamientos de Nuestro Párroco

Durante la Cuaresma nosotros tomamos el tiempo de mirar
a nuestros pecados y malos hábitos para poder nosotros a
través de la gracia de Dios abrazar mejor la santidad y buenos hábitos. Una forma de hacer esto es reflexionar sobre
los siete pecados mortales y sus virtudes opuestas. Estas son
siete formas de nosotros los humanos tienden pecar. Ellos
son categorías generales de la cual vienen muchos otros pecados. Mirando la raíz de nuestros pecados, podríamos estar
mejor conscientes de su presencia en nuestras vidas y permitir que Dios los siembre con gracia y virtud.
Orgullo - un desenfrenado e impropia estima de nuestro
propio valor. El orgullo es considerado el más serio de los
siete pecados. Conduce a todos los otros pecados capitales.
Este desordenado amor propio nos lleva a no estar dispuestos admitir faltas y debilidades, juzgando y despreciando
nuestro prójimo y sus éxitos. Este pecado nos lleva rehusar
someternos a la autoridad de Dios. La virtud opuesta es la
humildad, un sentido verdadero de nuestro valor antes Dios.
Avaricia (codicioso) - un amor desordenado por cosas materiales. Esto nos lleva a ser cosas y no ser Dios el centro de
nuestras vidas prefiriendo ver las cosas materiales como un
medio de servir a Dios y al prójimo. La virtud opuesta es la
generosidad o caridad hacia Dios y el prójimo.
Envidia - una tristeza cuando otros progresan (o una alegría
cuando otras fracasan). La envidia no es lo mismo como el
celo posesivo. Envidia es pura miseria a la persona quien lo
comete. La virtud opuesta es admiración o bondad por
otros cuando ellos tienen éxito (o simpatía por otros cuando
han fracasado).
Ira - el deseo de venganza sobre otros cuando no es nuestro
lugar sentarnos a juzgar. Solo Dios es el Justo Juez; debemos confiar que él castigara el malvado y premiara al justo.
Este pecado nos lleva a guardar riña y ser lento a perdonar.
La virtud opuesta es el perdón.
Lujuria - un apetito excesivo de satisfacer deseos sexuales.
Dios es el autor de la sexualidad humana, él ha decidido que
este gran don sea usado solamente dentro del Matrimonio.
Cualquier uso de este don fuera del Matrimonio es pecado.
Este pecado nos conduce tratar a otros como mero objetos
de nuestros deseos en vez de con respeto. La virtud opuesta
es la castidad cual nos libera cargar de la carne es de vivir
una vida generosa y moderada.
Templanza (Glotonea) - un desordenado deseo por comer y
beber. No es pecado comer y beber bien y disfrutar de ello.
Es un pecado comer y beber puramente por sacar de un
deseo gratificar nuestros deseos mundanos. Esto nos puede

llevar a adormecer nuestra hambre y sed de Dios quien es el
único quien puede satisfacer nuestros corazones. La virtud
opuesta es la templanza o control de sí mismo.
Pereza (Apatía) - pereza espiritual. Este pecado nos lleva
hablar sobre cualquier número de cosas importantes en
nuestras vidas: “a mí no me importa.” Cuando nosotros
vemos que una vida de santidad es difícil, este pecado nos
dirige no querer hacer un buen esfuerzo en nuestra peregrinación al reino. En este pecado nosotros descuidamos nuestros deberes ante Dios y el prójimo, y nos hacemos indisciplinados. La virtud opuesta es ser fervoroso y diligente en
nuestros deberes.

7:00 pm.
El ayuno y la abstinencia
 Todos los católicos de 14 años de
edad y mayores están obligados a abstenerse de comer
carne el miércoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de Cuaresma como penitencia de sacrificio.
 Todos los católicos de entre 18 y 59 años de edad están
obligados a ayunar el miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes
Santo (no más de una comida regular y dos comidas
pequeñas.)
 Dispensaciones por razones de salud o de enfermería se pueden

benefit St. Peter Catholic Church.

March 10 - April 21: “Priest, Prophet, King” Catholic Bible Study
St. Peter Catholic Church in Omaha
will offer a six-part Catholic Bible
study series with DVDs by Bishop
Robert Barron. It will be held on
Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm beginning March 10 (except Holy Thursday,
March 23.) Please register through the
parish office. The suggested study
guide is $24.00. To buy the study guide

Catholic Daughters Day of
Recollection
Thursday, March 10, 9:30 am -2:30 pm

Sacramental Preparation and Devotions
Baptism and Godparent Requirements
Parents of children who are six years of age or
younger and in need of Baptism must be registered, active parishioners of St. Peter for at least
three months. Godparents take on serious obligations when they sponsor a person for Baptism
and they should be virtuous and faithful Catholics. Godparents must be 16 years old or more,
fully initiated, practicing Catholics; if married,
godparents must be married in the Catholic
Church. Baptisms may be scheduled only after
the parents and godparents have completed the
requisite classes and the parish office receives a
letter from the parish at which the godparents
belong stating that the godparents are in good
standing with the Catholic Church and are eligible to be sponsors. Parents and sponsors must
attend a Baptismal class before the Baptism.
Classes in English usually are offered on the
fourth Sundays of March, June, September and
December from 3:00-5:00 pm. Pre-registration is
required. Baptisms in English are usually offered
on the second Sunday of the month at 2:30 pm
and on the fourth Saturday of the month at 9:00

Catechism Sacramental Preparation
for Children
The catechism school year goes from September
through May of each year. Registrations began in
May for the next school year. Classes are held on
Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12 noon, or
Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. Children
should be registered and attend classes for at
least two years before receiving sacraments. For

Home School Sacramental Preparation
Families who are preparing their children at
home to receive a sacrament this year should
register at the catechism office by September 1,
2015. If your child will be receiving a sacrament
this school year or the following year, please
register during Catechism and Homeschool registration times posted in the bulletin. A Baptism
certificate must be submitted. Please see the
parish website for requirements and important
dates for First Reconciliation, First Communion
or Confirmation: www.stpeterchurch.net/infosacraments.html.
Adult Catechesis, RCIA
Those over the age of seven who desire to become Catholic and/or receive the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation or Communion should
contact Fr. Broheimer for classes in English, or
Sister Clara for classes in Spanish. Classes on
Catholic doctrine in English are offered weekly
from September through May on Tuesdays from
7:15 pm to 8:45 pm. Classes in Spanish are offered on Mondays at 7:15 pm or at 10:30 am. All
are welcome to attend.
Marriage
Parishioners who are registered for a minimum
of six months are eligible to begin marriage
preparation at St. Peter. In addition, the Archdiocese requires a minimum of six months of
preparation prior to your wedding date. To
begin marriage preparation in English or Spanish, please contact the parish office.
Hall Rentals
Parishioners registered in St. Peter Parish for at
least three months may rent the parish halls for
receptions and events. For more information
please contact Mary Ramm in the parish office.
St. Peter SVdP Food Pantry
St. Peter Food Pantry currently needs cereal, fruit, toilet paper, canned tomatoes and
soup, winter coats (especially in men’s sizes). Please leave donations in the containers near the Church entrances. Thank you
for all donations.

Part-time Work
There is a job opening part-time for a bilingual person at the St. Vincent de Paul

40 Days for Life
40 Days for Life is a campaign from February 10-March 20 to save the lives of unborn babies from abortion. St. Peter parishioners are asked to pray weekly from
noon-1:00 pm on Fridays at Abortion &
Contraception Clinic of NE (1002 W. Mission Ave., Bellevue); and on Thursdays at
Planned Parenthood (3105 N. 93 St., Omaha). Please pray for an end to abortion.
EPS Baby Bottles
This Lent, St. Peter parish again
has the opportunity to support
Essential Pregnancy Services in
their ministry of helping women to embrace life for their unborn babies. Please
open your hearts to these unborn babies to
help these precious gifts from God. Take a
Friday Eucharistic Exposition
All-day Eucharistic Exposition is held on
Fridays after the 8:00 am Mass and ends
with Benediction at 6:00 pm. We are in
need of adorers especially at 10:00 am, 2:00
pm, 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm. Please contact the parish office to sign up for an hour
with Jesus.

El Cursillo Pre-Bautismal para Padres y Padrinos es requerido para Bautismos. Todo feligrés de San Pedro debe asistir en las platicas para Bautismos en San Pedro. (Si hay
problema con el horario de las pláticas, favor
comuníquese con Mary en la oficina parroquial
al 402-341-4560, ext. 100.) Los padrinos de
otras parroquias deben asistir en platicas en su
parroquia propia, o presentar una carta de permiso de su párroco antes de asistir en las pláticas en San Pedro. El cursillo es valido por tres
años. Padres de niños que serán Bautizados en
la Iglesia de San Pedro deberán estar feligreses
registrados y activos de la Parroquia de San
Pedro por lo menos de tres meses. Padrinos
deberán de ser iniciados completamente, practicando el Catolicismo, asistir en la Misa todo
domingo y día de guardar, y si están casados,
deberán ser casados por la Iglesia Católica, y
tienen 16 años o más. Los padrinos toman sobre sí unas obligaciones muy serias cuando
apadrinan una persona para el bautismo y deben ser virtuosos y fieles católicos. Les queremos animar a seleccionar muy cuidadosamente
los padrinos. Podrán fijar y pedir el día para los
bautismos solamente después de que los papás
y los padrinos hayan completado tres clases de
requisito y después de que la oficina de la parroquia haya recibido de los padrinos una carta
de la parroquia a donde pertenecen los padrinos, en la cual constatan que ellos están en el
buen favor de la Iglesia Católica y que son
aprobados para ser padrinos. Para padrinos
casados, por favor llevar copia de la acta de
Matrimonio por la Iglesia Católica. El cursillo
Bautismal se ofrecen cada dos meses en tres
domingos. Bautismos en español son ofrecidos
usualmente el primer, segundo y tercer sábado
del mes a las 9:00 a.m. y el cuarto domingo del
