Thoughts from Our Pastor
Rev. John P. Broheimer
We had over a dozen applicants for our Director of Music
position. All of them were incredibly qualified and eager to
work in our parish because of their sincere love for the
Sacred Liturgy of the Church and especially because of the
way we strive to offer our worship here at St. Peter. Most of
the applicants mentioned that they had heard of St. Peter
Parish before: how we strive to offer a sincere worship of
God according to the true mind of the Church, how our
Sacred Music Program offers the chanted propers of the
Mass according to the preference of the Church in our
English/Latin liturgies, how we have a genuine love for the
poor and put that love into practice, how we have a vibrant
Spanish-speaking community. There was not one applicant
who would not have been a dynamic and successful
Director. It was extremely difficult to settle on just one
applicant, but after applications, interviews, visits, and
auditions, I have chosen Mr. Christopher M. Candela as our
new Director of Sacred Music. He has a deep love and
talent for the Church’s gift of Sacred Music. I believe he has
many gifts to offer our parish. I am including his biography
so you can get to know him before he arrives. He must
move himself from Manhattan to Omaha and hand over his
responsibilities at his current parish, so he won’t be here
until mid-November. He should be here by the Feast of St.
Cecilia, Patroness of Organists and Sacred Music. Please
pray for him that he has a good transition to Omaha.
I would like to add how grateful I am to Mrs.
Teresa Paal for ably acting as Interim Director of
Music. Putting things in her hands enabled me to not worry
about the continued quality of our program while
concentrating on finding the best choice for our new
Director.
Mr. Christopher Candela, O.P. Organist, composer, conductor, and
tenor.
Christopher Candela is a native of Derry,
NH. Since 1992, Christopher’s devotion
to the Sacred Liturgy and study of
Eastern and Western Catholic Rites has
been at the core of his life in music. In
1995, Christopher was awarded the
Justine Bayard Ward Scholarship for
studies in organ performance at the Catholic University of
America. His teachers included Robert Grogan and Edward
Moore (organ), Leo Nestor (conducting), Elizabeth Daniels
(voice) and Theodore Marier (Solesmes method for
Gregorian chant).
In Washington D.C., Mr. Candela held several
significant posts. As Assistant Organist at the Cathedral of
St. Matthew the Apostle, Christopher played for
archdiocesan liturgies, Cathedral parish Masses and

concerts. During his tenure
as Assisting Organist at The
Basilica of the National
Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception, Christopher
featured prominently in
hundreds of liturgies
including televised Masses,
Sancta Caecilia, ora pro nobis.
international pilgrimages,
weekday Masses, events for the Military Archdiocese,
concerts, and other services of national importance.
Christopher served for ten years as Music Director for the
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, working with
the Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy to prepare for Eucharist
and Liturgy of the Hours for the annual Plenary Assembly
and other Masses throughout the year.
As Director of Music at the church of St. Stephen
Martyr in D.C. (2003 - 2010), he established a Parish
Conservatory, Music for Everyone which offered instruction in
voice, piano, violin and the performance/lecture series Tour
of Great Composers. Christopher also served as founder
and Committee Chair for Washington’s annual Gold Mass
for Professionals in Music and the Performing Arts, which
brought together musicians, faculty, and administration
from area music schools, the Washington National Opera
and the National Symphony Orchestra to pray for a year of
fruitful labor at the opening of the performing season.
Christopher’s passion for the study and practice of
organ improvisation features prominently in his concert
programs. Christopher has studied various styles of historic
improvisation and has been a featured performer/student in
the master classes of noted improvisers Philippe Lefebvre
(Notre Dame, Paris) and Martin Baker (Westminster
Cathedral, London). The Washington Post called his 2014
recital at the National Shrine “A marvelous earful…
demonstrating his imaginative command of each organ’s
color choices” saying further that “Candela’s technique is as
brilliant as the gilded mosaics of the church’s ceiling and
walls.”
Mr. Candela is an active composer and has
composed for choirs, orchestras and solo voice/
instruments, including Maranatha! for organ (2001) for the
nationally televised installation Mass of Theodore Cardinal
McCarrick. Christopher has performed on harpsichord
(continuo and soloist) with the Virginia Chamber Orchestra
under the baton of Maestro Emil de Cou (National
Symphony Orchestra). Christopher has also been
accompanist for the New York Choral Society Chamber
Singers. As a tenor, Christopher has sung and recorded with
such highly acclaimed ensembles as the American Repertory
Singers (ARSIS label). He was the featured tenor soloist for
the national NPM Convention concert performance of
Richard Proulx’s Preghiera di San Francesco in Cherry Hill, NJ.
Christopher is a professed lay member of the Order
of Preachers (Dominicans) and is currently pursuing a
degree in philosophy.

Tuvimos más de una docena de candidatos
para ocupar el puesto de director de música.
Todos, entusiasmados por trabajar en
nuestra parroquia por el amor sincero que se
tiene aquí en San Pedro por la liturgia sacra
de la Iglesia y por la forma en que nos
esforzamos por ofrecer nuestra alabanza,
calificaron enormemente. La mayoría de los
aspirantes mencionaron que habían escuchado de la
parroquia, la manera en que nos esforzamos en ofrecer una
alabanza sincera a Dios según la mentalidad auténtica de la
Iglesia, el hecho que nuestro programa de música sacra
ofrece los propios de la Misa en nuestras liturgias de Inglés/
Latín según la preferencia de la Iglesia, nuestro amor
sincero por los pobres que se pone en práctica, la
comunidad hispana viva. Cada uno de los aspirantes tendría
éxito como director y aportaría mucho. Fue bastante difícil
llegar a la decisión, pero después de entrevistar a todos los
candidatos y examinar todas las cualificaciones he decidido
en escoger al Sr. Christopher M. Candela como nuestro
nuevo director de Música Sacra. Tiene gran aprecio y
talento por el don de Música Sacra de la Iglesia. Siento que
tiene muchos dones que ofrecer a nuestra parroquia.
Aunque puede cantar bien el español, no lo habla
fluidamente. Pero está deseoso por
aprenderlo para servir mejor nuestra
bella comunidad de habla hispana.

responsabilidades en la parroquia

mudarse de Nueva York a Omaha, de
manera que nos estará con nosotros
hasta mediados de noviembre. Por

Hispanic Food Sale on Sundays
All are invited to enjoy delicious,
authentic Mexican, Salvadoran and

cost of the new roofs for St. Peter

Winter Coat Drive
St. Peter’s St. Vincent de Paul is
having a Winter Coat Drive. We are
collecting slightly-used or new winter
coats of all sizes. We especially need
children’s coats and adult XL or
larger. We are also collecting hats,
gloves, scarves and boots. Please drop
your donations off in the blue barrels
in O’Brien Hall and McMahon Hall.

Sacramental Preparation
Baptism and Godparent Requirements
Parents of children who are in need of Baptism
must be registered, active parishioners of St.
Peter for at least three months. Godparents
take on serious obligations when they sponsor a
person for Baptism and they should be virtuous
and faithful Catholics. Godparents must be 16
years old or more, fully initiated, practicing
Catholics; if married, godparents must be
married in the Catholic Church. Baptisms may
be scheduled only after the parents and
godparents have completed the requisite classes
and the parish office receives a letter from the
parish at which the godparents belong stating
that the godparents are in good standing with
the Catholic Church and are eligible to be
sponsors. Parents and sponsors must attend a
Baptismal class before the Baptism. Classes in
English usually are offered on the fourth
Sundays of March, June, September and
December from 3:00-5:00 pm. For more

Catechism Sacramental Preparation
for Children
The catechism school year goes from
September through May of each year.
Registrations began in May for the next school
year. Classes are held on Saturdays from 10:30
am to 12:00 noon, and Wednesdays from 5:30
pm to 7 pm. Children should be registered and
attend classes for at least two years before
receiving sacraments. For more information

Home School Sacramental Preparation
Families who are preparing their children at
home to receive a sacrament this year should
register at the catechism office by September 1.
If your child will be receiving a sacrament this
school year or the following year, please register
during Catechism and Homeschool registration
times posted in the bulletin. A Baptism
certificate must be submitted. Please see the
parish website for requirements and important
dates for First Penance, First Communion or
Confirmation:

Adult Catechesis, RCIA
Those over the age of seven who desire to
become Catholic and/or receive the sacraments
of Baptism, Confirmation or Communion
should contact Fr. Broheimer for classes in
English, or Sister Clara for classes in Spanish.
Classes on Catholic doctrine in English are
offered weekly from September through May
on Tuesdays from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm. Classes
in Spanish are offered on Mondays at 7:15 pm
or at 10:30 am. All are welcome to attend.
Marriage
Parishioners who are registered for a minimum
of six months are eligible to begin marriage
preparation at St. Peter. In addition, the
Archdiocese requires a minimum of six months
of preparation prior to your wedding date. To
begin marriage preparation in English or
Spanish, please contact the parish office.
Marriage in the Lord: Poured Out for
Love Retreat
A 2-day retreat for married couples Oct. 29
-30 at Benedictine Retreat Ctr. in Schuyler.

Requisitos para Bautismo y Padrinos
El Cursillo Pre-Bautismal para padres y
padrinos es requerido para Bautismos. Todo
feligrés de San Pedro debe asistir en las
pláticas para Bautismo en San Pedro. Los
padrinos de otras parroquias deben asistir en
pláticas en sus parroquias propias, o presentar
una carta de permiso de su párroco antes de
asistencia en las pláticas en San Pedro. El
cursillo es valido por cinco años. Padres de
niños que serán Bautizados en la Iglesia de San
Pedro deberán estar feligreses registrados y
activos de la Parroquia de San Pedro por lo
menos de tres meses. Padrinos deberán de ser
iniciados completamente, practicando el
Catolicismo, asistir en la Misa todo domingo y
día de guardar, y si están casados, casados por
la Iglesia Católica, y tienen 16 años o más, y
sus propios hijos deben ser Bautizados. Los
padrinos toman sobre sí unas obligaciones
muy serias cuando apadrinan una persona para
el Bautismo y deben ser virtuosos y fieles
católicos. Los padrinos deben presentar una
carta de aprobación firmada por el párroco de
su parroquia. Para padrinos casados, por favor
llevar copia de la acta de Matrimonio por la
Iglesia Católica. El cursillo Bautismal se
ofrecen cada dos meses por tres domingos.
Bautismos en español son ofrecidos
usualmente el primer, segundo y tercer sábado
del mes a las 9:00 am y el cuarto domingo del
mes a las 2:30 pm. Para más información favor

Primera Comunión y Confirmación
Todas las clases para niños se dan de
septiembre a mayo cada año. Inscripciones
están de mayo a agosto cada año. Clases están
en los sábados de las 10:30 am a 12:00
mediodía, y los miércoles de las 5:30 pm a 7:00
pm. Si el niño es Bautizado, es requerido
presentar un certificado de Bautismo. Los
niños deben asistir en clases por lo menos dos
años antes de recepción de un sacramento.

ST. PETER PARISH ROSARY NOVENA OCTOBER 7 – 15TH
October is the month of the Rosary because of the anniversary of the victory at
the Battle at Lepanto and the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, both occurring in
October. October 1917 is the month that Our Lady of Fatima last appeared to
the shepherd children, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco and the Miracle of the Sun
took place.
The Legion of Mary at St. Peter Parish invites all parishioners to join us in praying a
novena of the Rosary from October 7th to October 15th. No need to leave your
house. You can pray the rosary in your own home, at a time that is convenient
for you. Rosaries will be available in the vestibule and O’Brien Hall for anyone
needing one.
The feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, October 7th, is held in memory of the
glorious and triumphant victory at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Although ten
military victories have occurred through praying the Rosary, beginning in
St. Dominic's time up through modern times, that battle was the most convincing
military victory that proved without a doubt the great power of the Rosary.
In honor of the victory, Pope Pius V instituted the Feast of Our Lady of Victory,
which is still celebrated today as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. In 1883,
Pope Leo XIII officially dedicated the month of October to the Holy Rosary.
