AN INTERVIEW WITH POPE FRANCIS Why did you become a Jesuit? Interviewer: “Holy Father, what made you choose to enter the Society of Jesus? What struck you about the Jesuit order?” His Holiness: “I wanted something more. But I did not know what. I entered the diocesan seminary. I like the Dominicans and I had Dominican friends. But then I chose the Society of Jesus, which I knew well because the seminary was entrusted to the Jesuits. Three things in particular struck me about the Society: the missionary spirit, community, discipline. And this is strange, because I am a really, really undisciplined person. But their discipline, the way they manage their time—these things struck me so much. And then a thing that is really important for me: community. I was always looking for a community. I did not see myself as a priest on my own. I need a community. And you can tell this by the fact that I am here in Santa Marta. At the time of the conclave, I lived in Room 207. This room where we are now was a guest room. I chose to live here, in Room 201, because when I took possession of the papal apartment, inside myself I distinctly heard a ‘no’. The papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace is not luxurious. It is old, tastefully decorated and large, but not luxurious. But in the end it is like an inverted funnel. It is big and spacious, but the entrance is really tight. People can come only in dribs and drabs, and I cannot live without people. I need to live my life with others.” CANONIZATION OF POPES JOHN XXIII AND JOHN PAUL II Pope Francis has decreed that Blessed John XXIII and Blessed Pope John Paul II will be “inscribed in the book of saints” (canonized) on Sunday of the Divine Mercy, April 27, 2014. Having met Pope John Paul II several times while studying in Rome (as well as Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta), this will be the first canonized saint that Fr. Nick has personally talked to. Our love, condolences, and prayers go out to Dan Phillips, whose wife Marilyn Elizabeth Phillips died the week before last. 2013 RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY STATEMENT U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops As adopted daughters and sons of God, each October we begin the activities of Respect Life Month with the observance of Respect Life Sunday (Oct. 6). At Masses that day thousands of parishes across the country begin a year-long educational and prayer campaign in support of life. As chair of the bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, it is my pleasure to introduce this year’s theme, echoing Pope Francis’ call to “Open your hearts to life!” We live in a society of unbelief, where the unborn, the sick, and the elderly are often unwanted and endangered by acts of violence or neglect. Earlier this year, we marked the 40th anniversary of the tragic U.S. Supreme Court rulings Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton. Without grounding in the Constitution, natural law, or our nation’s human rights traditions, these decisions made it legal to end the life of an unborn child in the U.S. for any reason and at almost any stage of development. Despite these challenges, Pope Francis reminds us that we always have hope in Christ. The Holy Father speaks not only of physical life, but spiritual life as well—our life in Christ that has the power to transform us. By opening our hearts to his love and mercy, we let Christ dwell in us and we see more deeply the unique beauty of each person. We must respond to Pope Francis’ call with great urgency. Opening our hearts to life in Christ empowers us for loving, merciful action toward others. We must give witness to the Gospel of Life and evangelize through our lives. We must personally engage others and share the truth about human life. We must continue to show love and mercy, especially with those who have been involved in abortion. All members of the Church can bring healing to the world by upholding the beauty of human life and God’s unfailing mercy. We entrust all these efforts to the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, and her husband St. Joseph. They are models of virtue and holiness who gave everything to welcome Jesus into their lives despite the hardships. With their assistance, may we have the courage to open our hearts to life. –Sean Cardinal O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston. ***************************************** PRAYER FOR RESPECT FOR LIFE God, author of all life, bless we pray the unborn child, give constant protection and grant a healthy birth that is the sign of our rebirth one day unto the eternal rejoicing of heaven. Amen. The hats will be judged according to age-group categories, and the Knights will award prizes from the St. Paul Gift Shop. This is not, however, a funny/silly hat contest. When selecting a hat, think of something that could be worn to the Kentucky Derby, a royal wedding, or to a “Red Hat” ladies meeting—in other words, a real hat that is eye-catching but not ridiculous. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEW PARISHIONERS New parishioners are asked to register with the church by filling out a registration form that may be found on the table in the middle of the vestibule.
