Gospel reading
A reading from the holy Gospel according to
John 20: 1 – 9
Early in the morning on the first day of the week, while it was still dark,
Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved
away, so she ran off to Simon Peter and the other disciples and told them,
“The Lord has been taken from the tomb! We don’t know where they have
put him!” At that, Peter and the other disciple started out on their way
toward the tomb. They were running side by side, but then the other disciple
outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He did not enter but bent down to
peer in, and saw the wrappings lying on the ground. Presently, Simon Peter
came along behind him and entered the tomb. He observed the wrappings on the ground and saw
the piece of cloth which had covered the head not lying with the wrappings, but rolled up in a place
by itself. Then the disciple who had arrived first at the tomb went in. He saw and believed. For they
did not yet understand the Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.
Brief commentary
“The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith in Christ, a faith believed and lived as
the central truth by the first Christian community; handed on as fundamental by Tradition;
established by the documents of the New Testament; and preached as an essential part of the
Paschal mystery along with the cross: Christ is risen from the dead! Dying he conquered death; To
the dead, he has given life.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #638)
In today’s narrative, Matthew offers three different reactions to the empty tomb. Mary of Magdala
naturally thought that the body had been stolen. She did not yet believe. Next came the Beloved
Disciple and Peter. Maybe because he was younger, the Beloved Disciple arrived first, and in
deference to Peter’s position in the community let him go into the tomb before him. They both saw
the burial clothes and the head wrapping. Peter remained perplexed, but the other disciple “saw
and believed.”
Today’s reading offers three significant
messages:
 The empty tomb in itself is not a proof of the
resurrection. Only faith can make us accept
the resurrection.
¨
 The loved and loving disciple saw the
minimum yet believed.
 The Gospels were written several years after
the resurrection. Thus, they reflected the
faith of the early Christian communities.

San Juan 20, 1 - 9
El primer día de la semana, muy temprano, cuando todavía estaba oscuro,
María Magdalena fue a visitar el sepulcro. Vio que la piedra de entrada estaba
removida. Fue corriendo en busca de Simón Pedro y del otro discípulo, el
amigo de Jesús, y les dijo: “Han sacado al Señor de la tumba y no sabemos
dónde lo han puesto”. Pedro y el otro discípulo partieron al sepulcro. Corrían
los dos juntos. Pero el otro discípulo corría más que Pedro y llegó primero al
sepulcro. Se agachó y vio los lienzos en el suelo, pero no entró. Después llegó
Pedro. Entró a la sepultura y vio los lienzos en el suelo. El sudario que había cubierto el rostro de
Jesús no estaba junto con las vendas, sino aparte y doblado. El otro discípulo que había llegado
primero, entró a su vez, vio y creyó. Aún no había comprendido la Escritura, según la cual Jesús
debía resucitar de entre los muertos.
Comentario breve
“La Resurrección de Jesús es la verdad culminante de nuestra fe en Cristo, creída y vivida por la
primera comunidad cristiana como verdad central, transmitida como fundamental por la
Tradición, establecida en los documentos del Nuevo Testamento, predicada como parte esencial del
Misterio Pascual al mismo tiempo que la Cruz: Cristo ha resucitado de los muertos, con su muerte
ha vencido la muerte. Y a los sepultados ha dado la vida”. (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica #638)
En el relato de hoy, Mateo nos muestra tres reacciones diferentes ante la tumba vacía. María de
Magdala pensó que se habían robado el cuerpo. Todavía no creía. Los próximos en llegar son el
discípulo amado y Pedro. Quizás porque era el más joven, el Discípulo Amado llega primero, pero
en deferencia a la posición de Pedro en la comunidad lo deja entrar primero a la tumba. Ambos
vieron los lienzos en el suelo y el sudario aparte y doblado. Pedro se quedó perplejo, pero el otro
discípulo: “vio y creyó”.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas
importantes:
 La tumba vacía no es en sí misma prueba de
la resurrección. Sólo por la fe podemos
aceptar la Resurrección.
 El Discípulo Amado vio muy poco, pero
creyó.
 Los evangelios fueron escritos varios años
después de la Resurrección, por tanto
reflejaban la fe de las primeras comunidades
cristianas.
Para la reflexión comunitaria:
Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en
silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o
sentimientos.

¿Quién soy? ¿María, Pedro, o el Discípulo

2. ¿Cómo mi fe en la Resurrección afecta la
