Conocer el contexto cultural y social de las lenguas del grado.
Analizar y sintetizar mensajes y adaptarlos a las distintas situaciones
comunicativas usando los recursos lingüísticos, retóricos y literarios
adecuados.
Saber ordenar los datos pertinentes de un texto y su contexto
comunicativo para dirigir su análisis y evaluación.
Conocer las técnicas y procedimientos para la descripción textual y el
análisis de situaciones comunicativas.
Conocer las convenciones relacionadas con la estructura de géneros,
los recursos retóricos y el contexto de producción de una obra.
Estar familiarizado con los periodos, movimientos, obras y autores
más importantes de las lenguas del grado y cómo se engranan en su
contexto histórico, social y cultural.
Interpretar los acontecimientos de las literaturas del grado desde un
razonamiento multicausal y una perspectiva comparada.
Determinar los valores de un texto según parámetros de variación y
función textual, interpretarlo dentro del contexto en que ha sido
producido y ser capaz de analizar las convenciones que lo enmarcan.
Argumentar de forma adecuada a la audiencia, previendo
malentendidos de origen lingüístico o cultural que pudieran
obstaculizar la negociación.
Ser consciente del papel que desempeñan la lengua y la cultura en la
creación y transmisión de la identidad y aprender a gestionar las
dificultades que entraña un contexto globalizado.

las lenguas del grado y su influencia en el ámbito internacional
contemporáneo.

Course objectives
This is a survey course on nineteenth century British literature. By the end of
the course, students should be able to write an essay on texts in the
programme analysing their formal and stylistic features, identifying their
innovatory aspects and thematic concerns, and situating them in their
historical and cultural contexts.
Objectives in terms of learning outcomes:
I. To identify the formal, thematic and stylistic features of each text.
II. To situate each work in its historical and cultural context.
III. To understand the impact and influence of the literary texts and
movements studied in our contemporary world.
Objectives in terms of competences:
I. To acquire the techniques used in literary criticism: to develop the ability
to analyse the form and language of a literary text.
II. To have the skills to write essays and prepare presentations on texts in the
programme.
1.12. Contenidos del programa / Course contents
1) Poetry in the Romantic Period: Nature and novelty. Orientalism. The age of
revolution. Medievalism and the past. Narrative poetry. Versions of the poet.
2) Fiction in the Romantic period: The novel of manners and mores (Austen’s
Pride and Prejudice. The novel of ideas (Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
3) Fiction in the Victorian age: Romance and realism. Serialisation.
Didacticism. the Bildungsroman. Status and class relations. Gender roles.
Nationhood and empire. The sensational thriller and popular forms.
4) Victorian Poetry: Portraits of the artist. Gender roles and relations. The
dramatic monologue and other themes, issues and forms.

Seminars and written and oral assignments 40% (Information about these
will be provided at the beginning of classes)
The assessment activities have to be handed in or done on the assigned dates,
and cannot be made up UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER, neither on
a later date, nor after the end of classes for the second sitting (convocatoria
extraordinaria) which will be assessed following the same percentages of the
ordinary one (January/May). Should a student fail the exam in the first sitting
the percentages of class work will be saved for him/her until the second one.
