Ron Spencer & Jumpstart “Livin’ Low”. Blue Wave 2005. Excepcional álbum el
que nos propone la compañía Blue Wave. Ron Spencer es un gran cantante,
fino guitarrista y elegante estilista, que conoce los resortes del jump, del blues
y del swing de los años cincuenta como pocos saben hacerlo, exponiéndolos
con gusto y excelente criterio. La inclusión de Jimmy Cavallo, Pete McMahon
de los Kingsnakes, o Matt Traball de los Built For Comfort Blues Band no
hacen más que engrandecer si cabe este espléndido disco que contiene once
‘perlas’, a cual mejor, que entusiasmaran a más de un aficionado al sonido
‘west coast’ interpretado por uno de los más fieles y a la vez menos conocidos
representantes actuales de este estilo. Un cd para disfrutarlo una y otra vez sin
tregua ni descanso. MUY BUENO. Here comes an splendid cd of Blue Wave
Records. Ron Spencer is a great singer and a fine guitar player, with an elegant
technique who deeply knows fifties jump, blues and swing music not many
people can afford, performing all these styles with very good taste and
excellent criteria. You will find different musicians like Jimmy Cavallo, Pete
McMahon from The Kingsnakes or Matt Trabal, from Built For Comfort Blues
Band who make the cd grow in quality along the eleven ‘pearls’ included on it.
An album that will certainly satisfy all ‘West Coast’ blues lovers, this time
performed by one of the most faithful representatives of East Coast musicians.
A cd to be continuously and carefully enjoyed. GREAT
Downchild “Come On In”. Blue Wave 2005. Anteriormente llamados “The
Downchild Blues Band”, estos músicos han vuelto de nuevo a los estudios de
grabación para ofrecernos trece grandes muestras de su especial manera de
interpretar los blues, siempre muy acertados y enormemente inspirados. La
Downchild es una de las bandas de blues más antiguas e importantes de
Canadá y están lideradas por uno de los músicos mas carismáticos de la
escena canadiense, Don Walsh, quien compone, toca la armónica, la guitarra y,
en ocasiones, incluso canta. Downchild es uno de los grupos más prolíficos en
cuanto a grabaciones se refiere y este último disco es sublime, de enorme
calidad e interpretado con una gran naturalidad. Probablemente sea el mejor
de los que han grabado hasta el momento. IMPRESCINDIBLE. Previously
known as “The Downchild Blues Band”, these musicians have come back to
the recording studios to give us thirteen delightful samples of the special way
they have to perform blues, always relevant and played with great inspiration.
‘Downchild’ is one of the most popular long standing Canadian blues bands.
His leader, Don Walsh, has become one of the most charismatic blues
musicians in Canada. He plays harmonica and guitar, he is a songwriter and
sometimes he sings too. ‘Downchild’ are one of the most prolific recording
bands. This last cd is really amazing, with a high quality level and an
spontaneously performing. Probably it is the best one they have recorded till
now. ESSENTIAL.
Wentus Blues Band “Family Album”. Bluelight 2004. Un grupo que se atreve a
empezar un álbum con el tema “Stop Breaking Down”, con la pulsación, el
acierto, el gusto y el sonido con que lo hace este grupo llegado desde las frías
tierras de Escandinavia, es, como mínimo, digno de admiración. La Wentus
despliega fuerza, conocimiento y entrega, además de estar dotados de un
sonido empastado y bien engrasado. En este “Family Album”, cuentan con la
colaboración de invitados de lujo, como son Kim Wilson, Eddie Kirkland, Gary
Primich, Carey Bell o Louisiana Red entre otros, lo que ya es una clara
referencia de que no son una banda cualquiera, sino que saben y conocen lo
que se llevan entre manos, es decir, el lenguaje del blues, que muestran con
respeto, sabiduría y buena disposición. MUY BUENO. A band that dares to
begin an album with a song like “Stop Breaking Down” with the beat, good
taste, skill and original sound they do, deserves great respect. The Wentus
Blues Band come from the cold Scandinavian land an they show a great
knowledge and a powerful passionate playing, together with a well teamed
greasy sound. “Family Album” gathers some deluxe guest musicians, like Kim
Wilson, Ediie Kirkland, Gary Primich, Carey Bell or Louisiana Red among
others, which let us see Wentus Blues Band are nothing but an excellent group
which know what they are dealing with, that is to say, the whole blues language
they respectfully and cleverly bring us with good disposition. GREAT.
Bullfrog Blues Machine “Cross That Line”. A Munich 2005. Curiosa banda
holandesa compuesta por cuatro músicos, más algunos invitados que ayudan
a engrandecer el particular y original sonido de este buen grupo, que combina
con satisfacción las armonías con las bases del blues, realizando una mezcla
de pop-blues enraizado en la tradición del blues inglés de los años sesenta y
setenta. El disco se compone de doce temas originales, escritos en su mayoría
por el líder del grupo Hans Klerken, que es el cantante y guitarrista. Un buen
álbum para paladares exigentes que no defraudará a los fans del r&b europeo
de los años setenta. MUY BUENO. A very special four musicians Dutch band
plus some guest artists who help to grow in their particular special sound
which perfectly combine different harmonies with blues basis, that makes as a
result a mixture of pop-blues rooted on sixties and seventies British blues
tradition. The cd includes twelve original songs, mostly written by the band’s
leader Hans Klerken who sings and plays guitar. A good album specially
devoted to demanding palates, which will certainly satisfy seventies European
r&b fans. GREAT.
Rusty Zinn “Zinfidelity Vol.1”. Bad Daddy 2005. El guitarrista Rusty Zinn, uno
de los habituales en los circuitos del blues tejano y californiano, nos obsequia
en este brillante álbum con doce temas llenos de frescura, vitalidad y buen
gusto, destacando por derecho propio como una de las personalidades
musicales más interesantes del panorama de San Francisco y Oakland. Rusty
Zinn derrocha inteligencia y buen gusto junto a grandes dosis de energía,
conjugando con habilidad y destreza blues y soul a partes iguales de excelente
factura. En este último álbum, el cuarto de su carrera en solitario, nuestro
hombre alcanza su punto más álgido desde que empezara trabajando al lado
de grandes luminarias como Luther Tucker o Kim Wilson. Un estupendo disco
para el aficionado más exigente. BUENO. Guitar player Rusty Zinn is a regular
musician of Texas and California blues scene. This time he brings us a bright
album with twelve cool vitalist and tasteful songs, which make him become
one of the most interesting personalities of San Francisco and Oakland area.
Rusty Zinn radiates intelligence, good taste and a great dose of powerful
energy, skilfully and equally combining blues and soul. With this fourth cd of
his solo career, he has reached the peak since he began his musical career
working with some great artists like Luther Tucker or Kim Wilson. A very
interesting cd specially devoted to the most demanding fans. VERY GOOD.
Tota Blues “Crazy´Bout The Blues” Self Production 2005. Banda argentina con
pianista español afincada en Barcelona, que se caracteriza por interpretar unas
muy logradas versiones con gran calidad, ‘feeling’ y destreza del gran Muddy
Waters, lo que hacen con respeto, fidelidad y veneración. El excelente sonido
del blues de Chicago de los años cincuenta es su principal característica y eso
les ha llevado a acompañar a Louisiana Red en su última comparecencia en
Barcelona, cosechando un gran éxito de prensa y público En este segundo
trabajo de la banda liderada por el cantante y armonicista Tota, se incluyen
temas como “I Need My Baby”, “Shake Your Boogie”, “I Can’t Be Satisfied” o
“Long Distance Call”, por citar cuatro de los nueve que incluye el disco, todos
ellos interpretados con enorme intensidad y destreza. BUENO. Argentinian
band with a Spanish piano player, now settled in Barcelona (Spain) whose
principal feature is to faithfully perform Muddy Waters’ versions with an
extreme quality, feeling, respect and veneration. The excellent fifties Chicago
blues sound is their main quality and this has led them to back Louisiana Red
in his last gig in Barcelona with a great success. The band is leaded by singer
and harmonica player Tota and, for their second cd, they have included nine
songs. Pay attention to their passionate intense performing along the whole
album and specially listen attentively to “I Need My Babe”, “Shake Your
Boogie”, “I Can’t Be Satisfied” or “Long Distance Call”. VERY GOOD.
Chris Daniels & The Kings “10”. Self Production 2005. Chris Daniels es un
guitarrista y cantante con sonido hard-drivin´ blues y grandes dosis de ‘funk
groovy music’. En este álbum bien tratado y excelentemente producido e
interpretado Daniels consigue plasmar un trabajo profesional y lúcido,
prevaleciendo ante todo la calidad por encima de la comercialidad o la
simplicidad. Las diez canciones que se incluyen en este (como su titulo indica)
“10” poseen todas unos arreglos impecables, con una sección de vientos que
suena compacta y empastada, gracias a la habilidad musical de Jim Wadell,
Darryl Abrahamson y Tony Klatka, saxo alto y tenor, trompeta y ‘flugelhorn’
respectivamente. Un disco excelente para los que gustan de la música negra
realizada con profesionalidad y grandes dosis de calidad y buen gusto.
BUENO. Chris Daniels is a singer and guitar player with a hard-drivin’ blues
sound and a great dose of funk groovy music style. In this well conceived and
tastefully produced cd, Daniets gives us a professional clever well performed
work, prevailing quality over simple marketing policy. The cd includes ten
songs (as cd title says), all them with excellent arrangements and a powerful
well teamed horn section mastery played by Jim Wadell on alt and tenor sax,
Darryl Abrahamson on trumpet and Tony Klatka on flugelhorn. In short words,
an amazing cd perfect for black music lovers performed with great
professionalism and tons of quality and good taste. VERY GOOD
Mike Guldin & Rollin’ & Tumblin’ “Roadhouse Rhythm”. Wah Wah Boy 2005.
Mike Guldin sabe como conducir una banda y hacer que suene en la más pura
línea de la escuela tejana. Los músicos imprimen expresividad y diversión a
sus interpretaciones y lo hacen con un gran poder creativo y visceral. El
sentido del ritmo y los ‘shuffles’ que van desgranando a lo largo de este
‘Roadhouse Rhythm’ les hace particularmente sugerentes y vigorosos,
especialmente en su manera de concebir y realizar estilos que se les dan tan
bien como el ‘Memphis Soul’ o el ‘Muscle Schoals Swamp’, con gran destreza,
soltura y flexibilidad. Muy acertados están los ‘metales’ y las armonías vocales
en todas y cada una de las intervenciones que se incluyen a lo largo de todo el
disco. Mike Guldin es un buen director del grupo y un más que correcto
cantante y guitarrista. Un disco interesante y muy recomendable desde mi
punto de vista. BUENO. Mike Guldin really knows how to lead a band and make
them sound in the classic Texas school style. The musicians give enjoyment
and expressiveness to all their creative passionate performing. You will find on
“Roadhouse Rhythm” suggestive powerful shuffles and different good
conceived musical styles, from Memphis soul to Muscle Schoals Swamp all
them done with enthusiasm, great rhythm sense and skill. A special mention to
horn arrangements and vocal harmonies you will find along the whole cd. Mike
Guldin is an excellent band leader and a good singer and guitar player. An
interesting cd I highly recommend you. VERY GOOD.
Deja Blues “Killin’ The Grass!”. Deja Blues 2004. Si os gusta el blues, seguro
que este disco os satisfacerá. Deja Blues es un grupo divertido y que al mismo
tiempo divierte a todos aquellos que quieran pasarlo bien con ‘covers’ como
“Hideaway”, “I Just Wanna Make Love To You”, “Rock Me Baby” o el “Red
House” de Jimmy Hendrix. Deja Blues basa su sonido en la guitarra de su líder
Gordon Bulcock, quien junto a la cantante Wanda Cobb son los que dirigen
este pequeño combo formado por cuatro músicos. Un álbum para pasarlo bien
y mover el esqueleto. Hay que destacar y tener en cuenta el trabajo de toda la
banda, que se entrega en cuerpo y alma, y que dispone también de oficio
suficiente como para ofrecer un trabajo lo mas digno posible. BUENO. If you
simply like blues, this cd will totally satisfy you. Deja Blues is a funny band
who give enjoyment to all of you who like to have a good time with covers like
“Hideaway”, “I Just Wanna Make Love To You”, “Rock Me Baby” or Jimmy
Hendrix’s “Red House”. Their sound is mainly based on band leader Gordon
Bulcock guitar playing who, together with singer Wanda Cobb, control this
small four musicians combo. A perfect album for dancing and give you fun and
joy. An special mention to all musicians’ work who give the best of themselves
to produce an honest well performed and very professional album. GOOD.
Mark Hummel “Blowin’ My Horn”. Electro-Fi 2005. Después de su “Golden
State Blues” también para el sello Electro-Fi, nos llega este álbum, el primero
grabado en directo, de este formidable cantante y armonicista, profundo
conocedor del lenguaje rockin’-blues & boogie, del cual es un maestro
consumado. Todos los grandes armonicistas actuales como Charlie
Musselwhite, James Harman o James Cotton han dicho maravillas de él. En
este último trabajo Mark vuelve a demostrarnos su clase y virtuosismo en
trece canciones llenas de swing y poderío, con setenta y seis minutos intensos
e incendiarios, donde el pulso y la esencia del blues están patentes en todas y
cada una de las canciones. Os recomiendo que os llevéis este último trabajo
de Hummel a casa y seguro que no vais a parar de disfrutarlo una y otra vez
hasta llegar al límite de vuestra resistencia. MUY BUENO. After his “Golden
State Blues” recorded for Electro-Fi label, Mark gives us his first live recorded
cd. Hummel is a bright singer and harmonica player and he mastery and deeply
knows all rockin’-blues & boogie secrets and music devices. Great harmonica
players like Charlie Musselwhite, James Harman or James Cotton have said
wonderful words about him. In this last piece of work he shows again his
virtuoso musical style and class in thirteen powerful swingin’ songs and
seventy six electrifying flaming minutes, where the most intense blues feeling
can be found in every single minute. I can only recommend you to get a copy
and enjoy it again and again until you get exhausted. GREAT.
Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne “Let It Loose”. Electro-Fi 2005. Kenny Wayne es
uno de los grandes pianistas actuales de boogie woogie en la más pura
tradición y ortodoxia. Además de poseer un fraseo rápido y elegante, su
pulsación es tremendamente intensa y efectiva y su sentido del ‘tempo’, tanto
en los ‘slows’ como en los ‘shuffles’, es impecable. En este nuevo trabajo para
la compañía Electro-Fi, nuestro hombre se pasea -respaldado por un más que
competente combo compuesto de diez músicos- con elegancia, gusto y
vistosidad por estilos que van desde el ‘Kansas City swing’ hasta el ‘West
Coast jump’. La mayoría de las composiciones del cd pertenecen al propio
Wayne, aparte de un par de tributos al legendario Amos Milburn. Un gran disco
que debéis tener en cuenta si no queréis arrepentiros. MUY BUENO. Kenny
Wayne is one of the great actual but at the same time traditional and classic
boogie-woogie piano players. Gifted with a fast elegant phrasing and an
intense effective beat, he has also a faultless sense of tempo, not only in slow
tunes but also in shuffle rhythms. In this new piece of work recorded for
Electro-Fi label, Kenny is backed by a very professional ten musicians combo
which make him feel comfortable to tastefully and brightly perform different
styles from Kansas City swing to West Coast jump. Mostly all songs included
on the cd are Wayne’s own compositions, plus two tributes to Amos Milburn.
An amazing cd you should take into account. GREAT
Finis Tasby “What My Blues Are All About”. Electro-Fi 2005. Otra gran
producción de la compañía que dirige nuestro buen amigo Andrew Galloway.
En esta ocasión se trata de un espléndido vocalista con una gran experiencia y
una brillante y soberbia carrera. Cantante de voz firme y comunicativa, Finis
Tasby se ha consolidado como un carismático intérprete que goza del respeto,
no sólo de los músicos que le han acompañado, sino también de todo el
público que conoce su obra, así como de la critica especializada. En este
“What My Blues Are All About” los guitarristas Mel Brown y Enrico Crivellaro
han tenido el honor de acompañar a esta magnífica voz. De las doce canciones
que componen el disco, nueve han sido escritas por este impresionante
cantante, nacido en Texas y residente en California, que es Finis Tasby. Un
gran álbum que no podéis dejar escapar. MUY BUENO. Another great

you will find an experienced amazing singer with a long bright career. Finis
Tasby has a powerful straight expressive voice that has made him become a
charismatic artist who has won respect among musicians who have backed
him, audiences all over the world who know their work, and specialized media.
You will find on this “What My Blues Are All About” guitar players Mel Brown
and Enrico Crivellaro who share the honour of backing this superb voice. Nine
of the twelve songs included on the cd are this Texas born musician who now
lives in Caifornia own compositions. I can only say you should certainly get a
copy of this terrific album. GREAT.
Michele Lundeen “Song Inside Me”. Milestone 2004. Michele Lundeen es una
mujer con unas facultades vocales magníficas y grandes posibilidades de
triunfar, tanto por su estilo profundo y penetrante, como por su presencia en el
escenario. Michele se entrega en cuerpo y alma en todas y cada una de las
piezas que componen este “Song Inside Me” y el respaldo de todos los
músicos que participan en la grabación es inmejorable. Buen sonido, buena
producción y, sobre todo, músicos con mucho oficio, todo ello reunido bajo un
denominador común, que es ofrecer un producto honesto y respetable. Blues
blanco de los años setenta en la más pura tradición y forma, con una gran voz
al frente, donde las influencias de Janis Joplin, si se me permite, están
presentes en más de una canción. MUY BUENO. Michele Lundeen is a woman
with superb vocal faculties that gives her a lot of possibilities to reach
success, thanks to her deep straight style and her good stage presence.
Michele gives the best of herself in every song included on “Song Inside Me”
cd and the work of the backing musicians along the whole recording is really
amazing. Good sound, good final production and, over all, very professional
musicians, all designed to bring us a well done honest respectful work.
Original seventies white blues, leaded by a great voice where Janis Joplin’s
influences can be easily discovered in some cd tunes. VERY GOOD.
Mojo Stu “Real House Blues”. Mudbone 2004. Curiosa simbiosis la de este
cantante y guitarrista que combina con gracia y originalidad la ‘roots-blues
music’ con sonidos e ideas mas de vanguardia. Mojo Stu es un apasionado en
revivir lo que los americanos llaman ‘foot-stomping’ retro’ y lo hace con
entusiasmo y verdadera disciplina. Mojo Stu puede presumir de haber
compartido escenario con John Hammond Jr., Dr. John, Maria Muldaur, Robert
Cray, Johnny Winter, Leon Rusell o Rory Block entre otros muchos. Si os
gusta el blues en formato semi-acústico donde el instrumento predominante es
la voz y la guitarra National Reso-Phonic entonces estáis delante de un
excelente disco que colmará vuestras spiraciones, sobre todo porque Mojo Stu
es un gran intérprete de dicho estilo. BUENO. Original musical mixture
performed by this singer and guitar player who tastefully combines rootsblues-music with more avant-garde ideas and sounds. Mojo Stu passionate
brings back what the American people call ‘foot-stomping’ retro’ and he makes
it with great enthusiasm and discipline. Mojo Stu can proudly say he has
shared stage with such great artists like John Hammond Jr, Dr. John, Maria
Muldaur, Robert Cray, Johnny Winter, Leon Russell or Rory Block among
others. If you like semi acoustic blues where prevailing instruments are voice
and the National Reso-Phonic guitar, then you are facing an excellent record

Candye Kane “White Trash Girl”. Ruf 2005. ¡Qué puedo decir de esta gran
mujer que no sepáis ya los buenos amantes del blues! Y cuando digo esta gran
mujer, me estoy refiriendo únicamente a sus poderosísimas dotes vocales, no
a otras partes de su anatomía. Candye canta una vez más con convicción,
esmero, pasión, pero sobre todo entrega y autenticidad. Asimismo y como
siempre las letras de sus canciones no dejan de ser sugerentes y picarescas, a
la vez que llenas de una inteligente y fina ironía. En este nuevo trabajo, Kane
se ha rodeado de músicos de alto nivel cualitativo y de gran renombre entre
los aficionados al blues, como son Preston Hubbard, Gary Primich o Mark
‘Kaz’ Kazanoff por citar a tres de los que mas os sonarán. El resultado no
puede ser más fructífero y satisfactorio, es decir un disco fresco, donde la
diversión y el entretenimiento están asegurados a base de swing, blues, jump
y r&b a partes iguales. MUY BUENO. What can I say about this big woman that
good blues lovers already do not know! And when I say big woman I am only
talking about her powerful vocal qualities and not about her anatomy! Once
again Candye sings with great conviction, care, passion but over all with an
extreme feeling, always giving the best of herself. As usual lyrics are very
suggestive and hot spiced with and intelligent fine ironical sense. For this new
work Kate has found a bunch of well known high quality blues musicians such
as Preston Hubbard, Gary Primich or Mark ‘Kaz’ Kazanoff among others. The
result is a cool delightful cd where joy and fun are guaranteed, together with
with good doses of swing, blues, jump and r&b. GREAT.
Jorge Mariño & Pato Acevedo “Un Largo Camino”. Los Puentes del Blues 2005.
Uruguay no tiene prácticamente ninguna tradición en el blues y sin embargo es
bien curioso este dúo que nos llega desde ese rincón del mundo lo que, en mi
opinión, es bueno para la música que aquí tratamos, pues el blues se ha
convertido ya en patrimonio cultural de la humanidad y el disco que ahora nos
ocupa es una buena prueba de ello. “Un Largo Camino” es el fruto de la unión
de dos ‘locos’ del blues que desde hace años se dedican con amor y entrega a
este género musical. La guitarra acústica y la voz de Mariño se entremezclan
con la armónica del ‘Pato’ con gusto, sentimiento, armonía y destreza de forma
amena, pero sobre todo con honestidad, respeto y veneración por lo que
hacen. Once canciones de estilo Piedmont cantadas en su mayoría en lengua
española con composiciones propias, más otras de Cephas y Wiggins,
componen un álbum interesante pero, sobre todo, original y curioso. BUENO.
Uruguay is a country without blues musical tradition. However this duo who
come from there is a really interesting one. There is always good news to know
blues is played in different countries because it shows blues has already
become a cultural human race heritage and this cd is a good example of it. “Un
Largo Camino” is the result of the efforts of two ‘mad’ blues lovers who have
joined forces to devote themselves to play blues in their country. Mariño’s
vocal an acoustic guitar perfectly combines with ‘Pato’s’ harp with an extreme
taste, harmony, skill, feeling and veneration to what they are doing. Eleven
Piedmont blues own compositions, sung in Spanish, plus some Cephas and
Wiggins’ versions give as a result an interesting, original and curious cd. VERY
GOOD.
Michael Locke & The Repeat Offenders “Get Offended LIVE!”. Locke Music
2004. Michael Locke es un buen cantante pero, sobre todo, es un guitarrista
apasionado, vital e incendiario afincado en la parte sureste de Ohio. Su estilo
‘heavy-rock-blues’ se nutre de luminarias como Jimmy Hendrix y los temas
que interpreta en este álbum grabado en ‘directo’ van desde Freddie King a
John Lee Hooker, pasando por Willie Dixon o Slim Harpo, sin dejar de lado
material propio. Michael Locke es un músico correoso que desborda energía
se mire por donde se mire. La calidad de su música le ha llevado a compartir
escenario con músicos y bandas de la categoría de B.B. King, Fabulous
Thunderbirds, Coco Montoya, W.C. Clark y Johnny Nitro. Estamos pues ante
un trío que suena compacto y con un poderoso ‘directo’. BUENO. Michael
Locke is a good singer but over all a passionate flaming vitalist guitar player
who comes from the southern east of Ohio. His heavy-rock-blues musical style
has picked up influences from such great musicians like Jimmy Hendrix and
the varied songs included on this recorded live cd are different covers, from
Freddie King to John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon or Slim Harpo and, of course,
some own compositions. Michael Locke is a tough musician who overflows
energy and quality, which has let him to share stage with such outstanding
artists and bands like B.B. King, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Coco Montoya, W.C.
Clark or Johnny Nitro. We are facing a well teamed straight trio with a powerful
live sound. GOOD.
Edwin Holt “Second Time Around”. TopCat 2005. Edwin Holt puede presumir
de tener una soberbia voz de ‘crooner’ que le permite abordar estilos como el
blues o el soul con eficiencia y buenos resultados. En este brillante disco,
grabado para la compañía tejana TopCat, nuestro hombre apuesta por un

y emotivo álbum. Edwin Holt se ha sabido rodear de muy buenos músicos que
suenan impecables. Asimismo tanto los arreglos vocales como los de ‘metal’
han sido cuidadosamente elaborados. Un disco que no debes dejar escapar

result. For this bright cd recorded for TopCat Texan label, Edwin has chosen a
wide repertoire, from blues to funk and all southern black music which along
the years have deeply influenced him. His tone vocal ranges are full of nuances
in the path of Ray Charles or Johnny Taylor he deeply admires and worships
which becomes evident along this intense hot emotional cd. Edwin Holf is
backed by a bunch of good musicians, all with a great sound. Vocal and horn
arrangements have also been carefully done. A very interesting cd you must

Johnny Nicholas “Livin’ With The Blues” TopCat 2005. Álbum formidable, bello
e intenso se mire por donde se mire. Johnny Nicholas despliega toda su
fuerza, su calidad y sobre todo su enorme sensibilidad en todos y cada uno de
los blues que interpreta, desde el primero “Froggy Bottom”, hasta el último
“Down In The Alley” con toda la magia, la destreza, la habilidad y el ‘savoir
faire’ de la que sólo son capaces unos pocos ‘elegidos’ que han sido ‘tocados’
por el blues. Nicholas canta, toca la guitarra y el piano con su estilo habitual y
un gusto que no está al alcance de cualquiera. El repertorio escogido para el
cd es impecable y los músicos que intervienen en la grabación brillan todos a
gran altura, desde Marcia Ball a Greg Piccolo o Mark ‘Kaz’ Kazanof, por citar
solo tres nombres de auténtico peso específico. Un disco fluido, elegante,
honesto pero, sobre todo, hermoso como pocos. IMPRESCINDIBLE. Excellent,
wonderful and passionate are three adjectives that could perfectly define this
cd. Johnny Nicholas develops all his strength, quality and huge sensitivity in
every blues he performs, from “Froggy Bottom” that opens the cd to “Down In
The Alley”, that closes it, with the skill, magic and ‘savoir faire’ only a few
‘chosen ones’ who have been ‘touched’ by blues can do. Nicholas sings and
plays guitar and piano on his usual style with an outstanding good taste. The
repertoire is perfect and all the musicians included on this recording shine at a
very high level, from Marcia Ball to Greg Piccolo or Mark ‘Kaz’ Kazanof to
mention only three well known great artists. It is an elegant honest cool record
but, over all, delicious and lovely. ESSENTIAL.
Chris Beard “Live Wire!”. NorthernBlues 2005. Algunos llaman a este cantante
y guitarrista el ‘principe’ del blues, aunque la verdad es que yo no me atrevería
a decir tanto. Lo que sí puedo constatar es que Chris Beard es un magnífico
cantante, dotado de una voz grave y poderosa que pertenece a la nueva
generación de músicos de blues que se entregan siempre en cuerpo y alma. El
resultado de este cd hay que calificarlo como honesto, vital y enérgico, con
muchos tintes de blues contemporáneo, sobre todo en lo que a concepto y
arreglos se refiere. Cuando oímos sonar su Gibson Les Paul, en muchas
ocasiones nos recuerda al gran maestro Luther Allison, no solamente por la
digitación y el sonido que extrae, sino también por esa mezcla de rock-bluesfunk de la que hace gala a lo largo de este “Live Wire!”. Si os gusta el blues de
Son Seals, Bernard Allison o Tutu Jones, entonces tened por seguro que este
disco está hecho a vuestra medida BUENO. Some people call singer and guitar
player Chris Beard “the blues prince”. I would not dare say that, but what I
have realized is Chris is a great singer with a powerful deep voice who belongs
to the new generation of blues musicians who always give the best of
themselves in all their performances. The result is an honest vitalist full of
positive energy cd with many contemporary blues influences especially on its
arrangements and musical conception. When we heard his Gibson Les Paul it
immediately reminds us great Luther Allison, not only for the sound and
fingering style but also for the rock-blues-funk mixture he employs along “Live
Wire!” cd. If you like blues in the path of Son Seals, Bernard Allison or Tutu
Jones, be sure, this cd is done specially for you. GOOD.
Doug Cox & Sam Hurrie “Hungry Ghosts”. NorthernBlues 2005. Los buenos
aficionados a la música acústica con raíces están de suerte, porque en este
álbum han unido sus fuerzas dos personajes bien conocido por los fans
canadienses y por todos los degustadores de la música folk y afines. Doug
Cox y Sam Hurrie se muestran mas que inspirados, con una amplia y rica
variedad estilística, pues no solamente hay influencias blues, que
naturalmente las hay, sino que acercan posiciones a la música celta, india e
incluso medieval. Canciones como “Little Martha”, “Carry Me Away”, “Fear”,
“Kansas City”, “Not Time For Sam”, “Cool Drink Of Water” o “Red Haired
Raga” son sencillamente deliciosas, además de poseer todas ellas matices y
detalles de gran belleza sonora que sirven para enriquecer aún mas un trabajo
personal, curioso e intimista. BUENO. Good lovers of acoustic roots music are
lucky, because two excellent musicians have joined forces to records this cd.
Both are well know artists among Canadian fans and folk or other similar
music tasters. Doug Cox and Sam Hurrie are totally inspired, with a wide rich
variety of styles that cover from blues influences which are deeply present in
their music but also from so different kinds of music like Celtic music, Indian
songs and even medieval tunes. Songs like “Little Martha”, “Carry Me Away”,
“Fear”, “Kansas City”, “Not Time For Sam”, “Cool Drink Of Water” or “Red
Haired Raga” are simply delicious bites full of beautiful nuances and details of
an amazing good taste which increase the beauty of a personal intimist original

Hank Shizzoe & The Directors “Out And About”. Crosscut 2005. La popularidad
de este músico avanza mas cada día y se está afianzando como uno de los
mejores exponentes del rock-pop con raíces folk y grandes dosis de guitarra.
Su amplia variedad de estilos vuelve de nuevo a estar representada en este
quinto trabajo para la compañía alemana Crosscut que sigue confiando
plenamente en él. Hank Shizzoe nació en 1966 y, cuando no está de gira, reside
habitualmente en Suiza. Originariamente sus principios estuvieron fuertemente
marcados por Ry Cooder, J.J. Cale, Mark Knopfler, Billy Gibbons y Keith
Richards y esto se nota en la música que compone, tanto en este como en sus
anteriores álbums. “Out And About” es un buen disco que contiene catorce
estudiadas canciones donde el espectro tanto del rock como del pop o de la
música folk están presentes en cada una de ellas. BUENO. Hank’s popularity is
daily increasing and he is gradually becoming one of the best rock-pop artists
with deep folk roots music and a big dose of guitar. His wide range of different
musical styles can be found again in this fifth work recorded for German label
Crosscut Records that have really trusted on him. Born in 1966, Hank Shizzoe
is now living in Switzerland. He was originally influenced by musicians like Ry
Cooder, J.J. Cale, Mark Knopfler, Billy Gibbons or Keith Richards, which
become evident along his own compositions included on previous and this
new cd. “Out And About” is a good record with fourteen carefully done songs

Otis Clay “In The House”. Crosscut 2005. Una nueva entrega de la colección
‘In The House’, una serie de discos grabados en directo de los artistas
preferidos de la compañía alemana Crosscut Records. Otis Clay ofrece una
actuación perfecta y dinámica con canciones de corte soul que tan bien se le
dan a su particular tono vocal. Entre los temas incluídos en este álbum se
encuentran “You’re The One”, “Nickel And A Nail”, “For The Good Times”,
“Amen”, “Love And Happiness” y otras de similares características, pero
siempre dentro del contexto al que nos tiene habituados. Los arreglos de
‘metal’ son francamente impresionantes, dando cohesión y empuje al resto del
grupo para que el ‘maestro’ cante con la inmensa fuerza que le caracteriza.
Para amantes del soul y fans de Otis Clay. BUENO. A new delivery of ‘In The
House’ collection, a series of recorded live cds of the most outstanding
Crosscut Records artists. Otis Clay gives a complete powerful performing with
a repertoire based on soul tunes that perfectly go with his vocal tone. You will
find among the songs included on it “You Are The One”, “Nickel An A Nail”,
“For The Good Times”, “Amen”, “Love And Happiness” and other similar ones
that follow the same path Otis normally does. Horn arrangement are really
amazing and give a strong well teamed background to the rest of band which
lets ‘maestro’ Clay sing with and outstanding deep feeling. A cd specially

Terry Evans “Fire In The Feeling”. Crosscut 2005. Terry Evans es otro gran
cantante con un amplio abanico de posibilidades. Nacido en el delta del
Mississippi, como tantos otros empezó cantando en el coro de su iglesia
donde ejercitaba sus dotes vocales tanto de tenor como de barítono. A nivel
profesional su carrera musical empezó en California, primero como compositor
de canciones y, siguiendo los consejos de Ry Cooder, se inició como cantante
consiguiendo un gran triunfo, empezando una prolífica carrera llena de éxitos,
tanto bajo su propio nombre o compartiendo escenario con otros grandes de
la música. En este nuevo trabajo Terry Evans da lo mejor de sí mismo, con su
voz y sus composiciones llenas de lirismo, fuerza y expresividad. El plantel de
músicos que le acompañan están inspirados y brillantes y el resultado no
puede ser mas satisfactorio. Un disco elegante, intenso y de gran impacto.

possibilities. Born at the Mississippi delta, as many other singers he started as
tenor and baritone voice at the choir of the local church. He began his
professional musical career in California like a song-writer and following Ry
Cooder’s advice, he began to sing with a great success. Since then on he has
worked a lot, playing alone or sharing stage with other musical stars. In this
last piece of work he has given the best of himself, with an amazing singing
and a very expressive strength but, at the same time, with very intimist own
compositions. All musicians who back him do a bright inspired work. In short
words, an elegant inspired and amazing record. GREAT.
