AViD Presents Author James Edward Mills Authors Visiting in Des
Moines (AViD) is proud to welcome author James Edward Mills to the
Forest Avenue Library to discuss his recent book, The Adventure Gap.
Mills will discuss why minority populations are less likely to seek
recreation and adventure in the wilderness and what can be done to
bridge that gap. This event is sponsored by the Forest Avenue Brick
Fund Committee.
Summer Reading Kick-Off with Laura Jensen-Kimball Come hear local
author Laura Jensen-Kimball read her recently released book
MOMSTER. A funny tale of a boy who learns NOT to ignore his mother’s
instructions.
Summer reading Kick-Off with Victor Henigan Be entertained with
performances of reggae and hip-hop music, and take a turn on the
drums. Hear messages of peace, love, friendship, and tolerance. Learn
about Jamaican culture.
Opening Ceremonies Create your own team flag and compete in a
series of Olympic games, library style.
Go Team! Many sports teams are named after large and
intimidating animals (hawks, lions, tigers). Some small and
unassuming animals would make an excellent mascot for any team!
Learn about the adaptations of four of our education animals that
would make a great mascot for any swimming, sprinting, or wrestling
team!
Competitive Snacking Teens, learn how to make a variety of healthy
snacks. Great for athletes before or after the big game!
Fantastic Forces Kids! Come learn about scientific forces with the
Science Center of Iowa!
Break a World Record There are world records for so many different
things, why not attempt to break a few of them today? Can you stack
more than 51 pennies in 30 seconds? Can you balance more than 55
pencils on their end in one minute? We might not succeed, but it will
be fun to try.
A Whole New Ball Game! With the African American Museum of
Iowa Take a look at one of baseball’s heroes – Jackie Robinson! Join
us as we learn about his amazing life, and explore the sights,
textures, and even smells of the game for ourselves. Play Ball!
Furry Tales Stop by the children’s area and read a book to Jersey,
the reading therapy dog! Reading to Jersey is a great way to build
reading/language skills while making a furry friend!
