This extraordinary Jubilee Year of
Mercy offers us Catholics the

fruitful the mercy of Jesus Christ. The
motto for this special Holy Year,
“Merciful like the Father,” reminds us
that we can experience the Father’s
infinite love revealed to us in the face of
Jesus Christ through our openness to
mercy, both in seeking forgiveness from
those we have hurt and in giving it to
those who have hurt us.
Our ABCD appeal anticipates the
Lenten Season when we are called upon
to do personal acts of sacrifice and to
almsgiving.
Sacrificial
giving,
especially to benefit those most in need,
has always been a hallmark of our
Catholic faith.
As Pope Francis said. “…the Church, in
this time of great historical change, is
called to offer more evident signs of
God’s presence and closeness.”
Through your support of the ABCD you
do just that. Together, called to be
“merciful like the Father,” we are
One in Faith, One in Hope and One
in Charity.

The Liturgy on this Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time presents us with the subject of
the divine call. In a majestic vision Isaiah finds himself in the presence of the thriceblessed Lord and is overcome by great awe and a profound feeling of his
unworthiness. But a seraph purifies his lips with a burning coal and wipes away his
sin. Feeling ready to respond to God's call, he exclaims: "Here I am, Lord. Command
me!" (cf. Is 6:1-2; 3-8). The same succession of sentiments is presented in the
episode of the miraculous catch of which today's Gospel passage speaks. Asked by
Jesus to cast their nets although they had caught nothing during the night, trusting in
his word, Simon Peter and the other disciples obtain a superabundant catch. In the
face of this miracle Simon Peter does not throw his arms around Jesus to express his
joy at the unexpected catch. Rather, as the Evangelist Luke recounts, he falls to his
knees saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man O Lord". Jesus, therefore,
reassures him: "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men" (cf. Lk 5:10);
and leaving everything, he followed him.
Paul too, remembering that he had been a persecutor of the Church, professed
himself unworthy to be called an apostle. Yet he recognized that the grace of God
had worked wonders in him and, despite his limitations, God had entrusted him with
the task and honour of preaching the Gospel (cf. 1 Cor 15:8-10). In these three
experiences, we see how an authentic encounter with God brings the human being to
recognize his poverty and inadequacy, his limitations and his sins. Yet in spite of this
weakness the Lord, rich in mercy and forgiveness, transforms the life of human
beings and calls them to follow him.

The holy season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10th. Both Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday, March 25th, are days of abstinence from meat
for all who are 14 years and older. They are also days of fast (one full meal and
two small meals, with nothing eaten between the meals) for adults from 21 to 59
years of age. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat for all who
are 14 years and older.
The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are PRAYER, FASTING and
ALMSGIVING. The Church asks us to surrender ourselves to prayer and to the
reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms.

La liturgia de este quinto domingo del tiempo ordinario nos presenta el tema de la
llamada divina. En una visión majestuosa, Isaías se encuentra en presencia del Señor
tres veces Santo y lo invade un gran temor y el sentimiento profundo de su propia
indignidad. Pero un serafín purifica sus labios con un ascua y borra su pecado, y él,
sintiéndose preparado para responder a la llamada, exclama: "Heme aquí, Señor,
envíame" (cf. Is 6, 1-2.3-8). La misma sucesión de sentimientos está presente en el
episodio de la pesca milagrosa, de la que nos habla el pasaje evangélico de hoy.
Invitados por Jesús a echar las redes, a pesar de una noche infructuosa, Simón Pedro
y los demás discípulos, fiándose de su palabra, obtienen una pesca sobreabundante.
Ante tal prodigio, Simón Pedro no se echa al cuello de Jesús para expresar la alegría
de aquella pesca inesperada, sino que, como explica el evangelista san Lucas, se
arroja a sus pies diciendo: "Apártate de mí, Señor, que soy un pecador". Jesús,
entonces, le asegura: "No temas. Desde ahora serás pescador de hombres" (cf. Lc 5,
10); y él, dejándolo todo, lo sigue.
También san Pablo, recordando que había sido perseguidor de la Iglesia, se declara
indigno de ser llamado apóstol, pero reconoce que la gracia de Dios ha hecho en él
maravillas y, a pesar de sus limitaciones, le ha encomendado la tarea y el honor de
predicar el Evangelio (cf. 1 Co 15, 8-10). En estas tres experiencias vemos cómo el
encuentro auténtico con Dios lleva al hombre a reconocer su pobreza e insuficiencia,
sus limitaciones y su pecado. Pero, a pesar de esta fragilidad, el Señor, rico en
misericordia y en perdón, transforma la vida del hombre y lo llama a seguirlo.

El tiempo de Cuaresma comienza el 10 de febrero, Miércoles de Ceniza. Tanto el
Miércoles de Ceniza como el Viernes Santo, 25 de marzo, son días de abstinencia
de carne para todos los que tienen 14 años de edad o más. También son días de
ayuno para los adultos de 21 a 59 años de edad (Una comida completa, dos comidas
livianas y ningún alimento sólido entre comidas). Todos los Viernes de Cuaresma
son días de abstinencia de carne para aquellos de 14 años o más.
Los tres pilares tradicionales para la observación de la Cuaresma son la oración, el
ayuno y la limosna. La Iglesia nos pide que nos entreguemos a la oración y a la
lectura de las escrituras, al ayuno y a dar limosna.
Ven a rezar los LAUDES a las 6:00 AM el Miércoles de Ceniza, continuando los
Lunes, Martes, Jueves y Viernes durante la Cuaresma.

ofrece a nosotros, los católicos, la
oportunidad de redescubrir y hacer
fructificas la misericordia de Jesucristo.
El lema de este año jubilar especial,
Misericordiosos como el Padre, nos
recuerda que podemos experimentar el
infinito amor del Padre, que se nos revela
en el rostro de Jesucristo cuando nos
abrimos a su misericordia, buscando el
perdón de aquéllos a quienes hemos
lastimado y perdonando a quienes nos han
herido.
El llamamiento a apoyar el ABCD se
anticipa a la Cuaresma, en la que somos
llamados a hacer actos personales de
sacrificio y de limosna. Dar con sacrificio,
especialmente en beneficio delos más
necesitados, siempre ha sido un sello
distintivo de nuestra fe católica.
Como dijo el Papa Francisco. “...la
Iglesia, en este momento de gran cambio
histórico, está llamada a ofrecer signos
más evidentes de la presencia y la
cercanía de Dios”. Esto es precisamente lo
que usted hace al dar su apoyo al ABCD.
Unidos en nuestra respuesta al llamado a
ser “misericordiosos como el Padre”,
permaneceremos Unidos en la Fe, Unidos
en la Esperanza y Unidos en la Caridad.
