C
atholics around the world woke up on Monday to the news of
Pope Benedict XVI’s impending resignation. This event, though
rare, is not unprecedented in the history of our Church. In 1294 Pope
Celestine V, in order to bring peace between two factions in the
Church, was dragged out of a monastery to be named pope. After only
five months as the Bishop of Rome, he issued a solemn decree declaring it possible for a pope to resign and then promptly did so. He then
lived the rest of his days as a hermit and was later canonized.

efore Celestine, the only other two pontiffs
to resign were the current Pope’s namesake Benedict IX in 1045 and his successor
Gregory VI the year after.

who had been beset by a succession of financial scandals. After persuading the disgraced incumbent to resign in 1045, and then
becoming his successor as Gregory VI, he also
resigned the following year after he was accused of benefiting financially from Benedict's

anon 332 in the Code of Canon Law states,
“If it should happen that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity
that he makes the resignation freely and that
it be duly manifested, but not that it be accepted by anyone.” Possibly the only thing unprecedented about the Pope’s resignation is
that it is done without any question or challenge of his legitimate office. He retires to do
what he has been doing throughout his pontificate, to pray for the Church and continue his
writing. Both are tremendous gifts he continues to offer the Church.

os católicos alrededor del mundo se despertaron el lunes con la noticia de la renuncia inminente del Papa Benedicto XVI. Este evento aunque es raro, no tiene precedentes en la historia
de nuestra iglesia. El Papa Celestino V en 1294, con el fin de lograr la paz entre dos facciones
en la iglesia fue sacado de un monasterio para ser nombrado Papa. Después de solo cinco meses
como Obispo de Roma, emitió un decreto solemnemente declarando la posibilidad para que un
papa renuncie e inmediatamente lo hizo. Vivió el resto de su vida como un ermitaño y después fue
canonizado.

l Canon 332 del código de derecho Canónico
establece. “Si fuera el caso de que el Pontífice Romano renunciara a su cargo, se requiere
para la validez que la renuncia se haga libremente y que sea debidamente manifestada, pero
no que sea aceptada por nadie.” Posiblemente la
única cosa sin precedente sobre la renuncia del
papa es que se realiza sin ningún tipo de problemas o desafíos de su cargo legítimo. Se retira a
hacer lo que ha estado haciendo durante su
pontificado, orar por la iglesia y continuar escribiendo. Ambas cosas son tremendos regalos que
él continua ofreciendo a la iglesia.

l próximo mes, un conclave será llamado y
un nuevo papa será elegido. Está Cuaresma
es un tiempo maravillosos para nosotros, para
orar para que el Espíritu guíe a los Cardenales
electores, para que nuestro nuevo pastor pueda
llenar los zapatos de Pedro y continúe guiando
a la iglesia y al mundo de Jesucristo.

AND INFERTILITY
RCIA does Lent the “Rite” way
For those in the RCIA, Lent is a whirlwind
of rites and high emotion as they enter the
final stages of their preparation to receive
sacraments of Initiation.
On February 17th parishes throughout the
world celebrate the Rite of Sending and the
Rite of Election. In the Los Angeles Archdiocese, those catechumens and candidates who
are to receive sacraments during the Easter
season are presented to the parish at the
9:30 AM and 12:30 PM Mass. They sign the
Book of the Elect and are sent to meet with
Archbishop Jose Gomez at the cathedral later that afternoon. A group photograph and
the list of their names are posted in a side
altar at the cathedral.

infertility remain “fruitful”?
Please join us for a small discussion group and prayer support as
Fr. Philip discusses Catholic infertility and how it affects the married
vocation. The Holy Family Support
Group is a group of Catholic women
experiencing difficulty growing
their families and looking for a loving place to share and/or pray together with
other women in a similar place. Interested
couples may include those experiencing subfertility, infertility, secondary infertility, miscarriage, as well as those interested in or pursuing foster care and/or adoption. Our crosses may be different but we can support each
other in our struggle to be open to life in
God’s time.
Meetings are every 2nd Thursday of the
month. The next meeting is
February 21st, 7 to 8:30 PM.

MIERCOLES DE CENIZA

Este miércoles pasado fue Miércoles de Ceniza.
Es una tradición muy antigua en la iglesia, la liturgia del Miércoles de Ceniza, que toma su nombre
de la solemne ceremonia en la cual el sacerdote
bendice la ceniza y luego la impone en la frente
de los fieles. Esta liturgia del Miércoles de ceniza
fue establecida como el primer día de la Cuaresma
alrededor del año quinientos noventa y seis por el
Papa San Gregorio el Magno, uno de los más insignes sumos pontífices de la iglesia de la antigüedad cristiana.
Es digno aceptar la popularidad del Miércoles de
Ceniza en el mundo entero entre los fieles católicos.
Una manifestación muy interesante.
En realidad, se trata de una de las manifestaciones
más interesantes de la religiosidad popular. Los
fieles vienen a recibir la ceniza en gran número y
con mucho fervor. Aquí están los que vienen con
regularidad a la iglesia todos los domingos y los
que vienen solamente dos o tres veces al año. Cabe preguntarnos ¿porqué viene tanta gente a la
iglesia para ser marcados con ceniza al comenzar
la Cuaresma?
Hay quienes vienen a ser marcados con la ceniza
en la frente simplemente por seguir una tradición
que aprendieron de sus padres, pero sin saber lo
que significa Otros creen que la ceniza les trae
una bendición especial. También hay quienes reciben hoy la ceniza para dar testimonio público de
su religiosidad, e identificarse como católicos en
todas partes. En fin, no faltan algunos que tienen
la creencia supersticiosa de que si no reciben la
ceniza algo malo les va a pasar. Sería interesante
hacer una encuesta entre los que viene a recibir la
ceniza para saber porque vienen con tanto interés
y devoción a recibir la señal de la ceniza en la
frente.
Llevar la ceniza en la frente es una señal de humildad y arrepentimiento. En este día empezamos
la Cuaresma, haciendo penitencia por nuestros
pecados, implorando la misericordia de Dios, buscando la reconciliación con él para comenzar una
nueva vida consagrada enteramente a su servicio.
Se puede decir que la imposición de la ceniza a
los fieles el día Miércoles de Ceniza es una llamada que nos hace la iglesia para que renunciemos al pecado y abramos sin reserva nuestros corazones a la gracia de Dios.
Jesucristo al comenzar su misterio público, exhortaba a sus oyentes a la conversión interior, lo mismo que hicieron antes que él Juan el Bautista y los
profetas del Antiguo Testamento.
Oración, Ayuno y Arrepentimiento.
También Jesucristo recomendaba la oración, el
ayuno y el arrepentimiento, así como la limosna,
para santificarnos. Pero estas prácticas religiosas,
para que sean gratas a Dios y de beneficios para
nuestras almas, deben de hacerse con pureza de
intención, es decir, sin buscar en modo alguno la
aprobación y alabanza de los demás. Según la doctrina del evangelio que se proclamó el miércoles,
pierde miserablemente su tiempo quien al hacer
actos piadosos busca el aplauso de los demás. Ni
siquiera nos aprovecha la oración si acudimos al
templo por pura vanidad y para que la gente se admire de nuestra religiosidad. Jesús nos advierte
que los ritos externos no valen nada si se realizan
buscando solamente el reconocimiento y la admiración de los demás. Por eso nos dice el Señor
“Cuando des limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace tu derecha; cuando vayas a
rezar, entra en tu cuarto; cuando ayunes, perfuma
la cabeza y lávate la cara; y tu Padre que ve en lo
escondido te recompensara”
Reflexión
Procuremos cumplir en todo la voluntad de
Dios. Comprendamos que los cristianos,
como nos dice San Pablo en su carta a los
Romanos, hemos muerto al pecado por el
bautismo y hemos nacido a una nueva vida
como hijos de Dios. Si hemos muerto con
Cristo en el bautismo, renunciando al
pecado, también viviremos con él, si nos
mantenemos firmes, también reinaremos
con él

ALL ABOUT GROOMING BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS
Once again we are asking for your help. Today, February 17th after all the Masses,
we will be passing out plastic bags that we ask you to fill with grooming items.
A list of suggested items is included. Between the bags we will gather
from this Sunday collection and those we will fill at our parish gathering on March 15th (see below), our goal is to collect 4,000 bags that
we will pass out to the homeless during the year. For this to happen
we need your support. For the last three years we have fallen short of
this goal. Please help us surpass it this year.

social and service event for the entire family:
GROOMING BAG STUFFING NIGHT
FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 6:30 PM, Hegarty Hall
We’ll start with a fabulously delicious meatless spaghetti dinner. After dinner, we use an assembly-line approach to fill more than 1,000 grooming bags in a little more than an hour. It’s fun—it’s
easy. Come alone or bring a friend. If you haven’t done this before, please give it a try. You won’t
be sorry.
If you have travel size items that you’d like to contribute for stuffing, we can use toothpaste and
toothbrushes, soap, lotions, shampoo, deodorant, razors, combs and lip balm. New men’s white
socks are also needed.
CASH DONATIONS
We also welcome any advance cash donations to enable us to purchase items in bulk. Checks
should be made payable to St. Margaret Mary Parish. On the memo line, note that it is for the
Grooming Bag event. Mail it to the church (attention Deacon Dan) or drop it in the collection
basket on Sunday in an envelope marked for the Grooming Bag event.

Estimados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Este año conmemoramos el décimo aniversario
de la implementación del Estatuto adoptado
por los Obispos de los Estados Unidos para la
protección de niños y jóvenes. El Estatuto
contiene medidas prácticas y pastorales con
relación a los casos de abuso sexual; sobre
cómo prevenir futuros abusos y cómo ayudar a
las víctimas de abuso durante el proceso de
sanación. Aunque nunca debemos disminuir
nuestros esfuerzos por proteger de todo daño
a nuestros niños y jóvenes, en este aniversario
del Estatuto es apropiado reflexionar sobre el
buen trabajo que tantas personas en nuestra
Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles han realizado
para asegurar que nuestros niños estén protegidos. Durante la última década, más de 100
mil adultos y niños en nuestras parroquias y
escuelas han participado en los programas para la concientización y prevención sobre el
abuso sexual. Se han realizado más de 5 mil
sesiones de VIRTUS ®, poniendo este importante entrenamiento al alcance de todos. La
Arquidiócesis sigue siendo una de las más
grandes organizaciones privadas en California
que registra las huellas digitales de empleados
y voluntarios que trabajan con niños. Más de
100 mil adultos han pasado por este importante procedimiento de pre-selección.

BOLSITAS DE LIMPIEZA PARA LOS DESAMPARADOS
EVENTO PARA LA COMUNIDAD
Una vez más estamos pidiendo su ayuda. Hoy, 17 de Febrero después de todas las
Misas, estaremos repartiendo bolsas de plástico que le pedimos que complete
con artículos de aseo. Una lista de artículos sugeridos se incluye. Entre
las bolsas que se reunirán a partir de esta colecta del domingo y los que
se llenen en nuestra evento parroquial el 15 de marzo (ver más abajo),
nuestro objetivo es recoger 4.000 bolsas que nosotros le pasaremos a

Vamos a empezar con una cena sin carne fabulosamente deliciosa de espagueti. Después de la cena, se utiliza un enfoque de cadena de montaje para llenar más de 1.000 bolsas de aseo en un poco
más de una hora. Es divertido, es fácil. No venga solo o traiga a un amigo. Si usted no ha hecho
esto antes, por favor, darle una oportunidad. Usted no se arrepentirá.
Si tiene artículos de viaje de tamaño pequeño que le gustaría contribuir para este evento,
podemos usar pasta de dientes y cepillos de dientes, jabón, lociones, champú, desodorante,
máquinas de afeitar, peines y bálsamo labial. Calcetines de nuevos para hombres blancos
también son necesarios.

También son bienvenidas las donaciones en efectivo por adelantado para que podamos comprar

It is interesting to note that most of
the participants who attended previous
group sessions stated that sitting and sharing
with others who have or are experiencing
grief and loss was the part that was
most helpful to them.
I also found that the subjects that came up
most often in group were issues that had to do
with forgiveness, especially forgiveness of self.
Please join us and we will walk the path
through grief together.

The Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary has issued a decree that outlines
the conditions for which Catholics may obtain a plenary indulgence
during the Year of Faith. According to the decree, Catholics who
are “truly repentant, have duly received the Sacrament of Penance and
Holy Communion and who pray for the intentions of the Supreme
Pontiff,” may receive the Plenary Indulgence every time they go
as pilgrims to designated churches “and take part there in some sacred
function or at least pause in recollection for a suitable length of time
with devout meditation, concluding with the recitation of the Our Father, the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form, invocations to the
Blessed Virgin Mary or, depending on the case, to the Holy Apostles or
Patrons.” In the San Pedro Pastoral Region, the pilgrimage sites are:

Adding Up Our Parish and
School Child Protection Efforts
It has been more than 10 years since the implementation of the US Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Charter contains practical and pastoral steps that address allegations of sexual abuse, prevent future
abuse, and help abuse victims through the healing process. Over
the past decade, more than 200,000 adults and more than 1 million children have undergone abuse awareness and prevention sessions in archdiocesan parishes and schools. Over 5,000 VIRTUS®
sessions have been conducted, making access to this important
training easily available. Additionally, the archdiocese continues to
be one of the largest private organizations in California to fingerprint employees and volunteers—121,000 to date—who work with
our children.

una ciudad del amor y de la verdad, donde todos pueden saber que Dios está cerca en su amor, y
en el horizonte de toda vida están abiertos a su promesa de salvación .
Pido que nuestro gran patrona, Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, vele sobre vosotros y sobre
vuestras familias y nos ayude a ser el amor de su Hijo, Jesucristo, una realidad más
grande en el mundo.
