27th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A)
Pastor’s Corner
The gospel that we read today presents a teaching that is most current. The
parable that Jesus tells could fill the front pages of the newspapers and would
take many months of investigation by television reporters. The parable speaks of
some corrupt employees who did not carry out their duties. It is a current
parable because we have been tricked by others. Perhaps because we in turn
have also deceived others.
Initially the parable was an accusation against the Pharisees. They were the
leaders of the people. They had received from God the mission to serve and
lead the people, but they used their position for personal gain. Jesus exposes and
rejects them. And they know that the parable is directed at them; they know
that the son that is murdered in the parable is the One who is speaking to them.
That’s why they become irate against Him. The Kingdom of God will be taken
away from their hands and handed over to others who are honest. The hearers
understood that Jesus had come to begin a new era founded on truth and
honesty.

The POPE SPEAKS/HABLA EL PAPA
The Church is “Catholic”
General Audience, September 17, 2014
Catholic means universal, and a clear sign of this Catholicity is that [the Church]
speaks all languages. This is none other than the effect of Pentecost: indeed, it was
the Holy Spirit that enabled the Apostles and the entire Church to communicate to all,
to the very ends of the earth, the Good News of salvation and of God's love. Thus,
the Church was born Catholic – that is, 'symphonic' since the beginning, and she
cannot be otherwise, destined as she is for evangelization and for encountering
everyone.

As part of the “Around the World” cultural curriculum, students in each grade level have been
learning about various foreign countries and their cultures. The four-year olds in PK4 received a
special visit from Chinese teacher, Mrs. Yentzu Chen. She taught the children about the Chinese
New Year and explored with them some of the symbolisms and traditions of the holiday. The
students had a great time learning about China and listening to several Chinese legends. Mrs.
Chen also taught the children several words in Mandarin and how to spell their names using Chinese characters.
We are very grateful to Mrs. Yentzu Chen for taking time out to talk to our students. In addition
to being a wonderful guest teacher, Mrs. Chen works with Links World Language who provides
after school Mandarin lessons at St. Hugh as part of our extensive after school program.

Virtue of the Month
This month, our students are learning about the value of respect.
They will be learning and discussing:
 How Jesus’ teaching, often called the Golden Rule, is a
timeless and universal call to value the dignity of each human
person.
 That respect is intrinsic to our beliefs as Catholics in the
God-given dignity of each person
 Ways to show respect for themselves and others
 The important ways respect can strengthen and unite families.
