A Festival in Honor of Our Lady of the Rosary
We invite all our parishioners to come to St. Raymond’s Church on
October 7th, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary to a celebration in her honor.
On October 7th at 7PM, a bilingual Mass followed by a “Living Rosary”
will take place. This is sponsored by the combined organizations devoted
to the Blessed Mother.
We would ask the participants in the “Living Rosary” to bring
a single rose which will be given to the Blessed Mother that evening.

Who’s in charge?
One day a group of elderly Jewish women were
talking about the catastrophes and evils of the world
and, after a long litany of problems and conflicts, one
of them exclaimed: “It makes you wonder who is in
charge.” Facing evil and sorrow in the world raises
such questions. It is the same question that the
prophet poses in the first reading and a question we
often ask ourselves: “Why does God allow such things
to happen in the world? Is so much pain God’s will?
On the other hand, and particularly in this
individualistic society, we consider things that are
acquired through our own merit
and actions.
Sometimes people think they can even avoid death by
taking the necessary precautions, exercising, and
eating healthy!
In both cases—whether we give God full
responsibility or consider that we are in complete
control— we are denying true faith. Faith asks for
great trust, without fears or anxiety. Faith demands
that we allow God to be God, while working to turn
this world into what he desires. That is, we are asked
to have attitudes and actions in accordance with the
call we received. It means working as if everything
depended on us and praying although we know
perfectly well that everything depends on God. We
cannot blame God for things that are the fault of
people’s actions or their lack of action. Nor can we
think that by our own efforts we will turn things
around. We need to work and trust, often not seeing
the final result, but grounding ourselves firmly in
God’s promises.
The words of Jesus, which state that once you
have done everything in your power, you must say “
we are but worthless servants,” it is not trying to say
Christians should have low self esteem, but to
recognize that all grace and results come from God.
We act in faith according to the promise and we know
that faith can move mountains.
For reflection
When have I doubted God or have asked why He allows
certain things to happen in the world? When have I felt
frustrated thinking that my efforts should be producing
greater results? Where was God during this moment?

have envelopes, please come to the rectory office … all
school parents who apply for Catholic tuition rates must

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES … have started … please
register your child … all students in our public schools

GODPARENTS … if you are a godparent for a baptism, you
must be a Catholic who has received the sacraments of
Baptism, Communion and Confirmation … if you are
married, you must be married in the Catholic Church.
CONGRATULATIONS … to Sister Mary Ann D’Antonio, the
principal of the Girls’ Academy, and her staff for a
beautiful opening Mass last week to celebrate 50 years of
Catholic education at the girls’ high school.

bills in a difficult economy … the weekly collections are

COMITE HISPANO … plan your calendar … the Grand Dance
and Concert will be held on Saturday, November 13 in the
auditorium … tickets will be $25 (includes a buffet) … for

CHURCH RENOVATIONS … we have started to repair and
to paint our Lower Church which will be used during the
renovation period … also a decision needs to be made
about painting the Upper Church. It
seems that there is chipping paint
and de-coloring of the paint … so
that will be added to the list along
with pew repairs and new cushions,
a marble floor, terracotta tiles under the pews, enlargement of the
altar, new sanctuary floor and sanctuary furniture, electrical work,
etc. … shortly we will announce
giving opportunities and memorial
items … our beautiful church will be
restored to its former glory! The Plan is to close the
Upper Church on November 7th, to use the Lower
Church for our Masses, confessions, and services until
April 15th, and reopen for Holy Week 2011!
PARISH REUNION SUNDAY … is scheduled for Sunday,
October 17 at the 12 noon Mass … we will honor especially
Mrs. Ann O’Keefe and Ms. Betty Halligan for their years of
service to the parish and our schools … following the Mass
we will have tours of our 3 schools by our students and
some light refreshments … all are invited to renew old
acquaintances and to make new friends at St. Raymond’s …
spread the word.
LIVING ROSARY … is this Thursday, October 7 … bi-lingual
Mass at 7 PM followed by the rosary in church prayed by
different groups and representatives from the parish … all
are invited for a beautiful celebration in honor of the
Blessed Mother … for more information, please see Father

ANOINTING OF THE SICK … is scheduled for Saturday,
October 16 at 12 noon Mass in English … in Spanish on
Saturday, October 23 at 12 noon Mass in Spanish (English
Mass will be in the Lower Church that day).
THE PARKING LOT …there have been a few complaints
about the parking lot… cars being damaged and hit … cars
using more than one space … cars parked in the
driveway … if we are coming to church , we should be
considerate of others in the parking lot … if you hit a
car, admit the accident … one car for one space … do
not block the driveway … we do not have a parking
attendant so we depend on everyone’s courtesy and
responsibility … thank you.
ACADEMY 50TH JUBILEE GALA LUNCHEON … is scheduled
for Saturday, October 16 form 1 to 6 pm … Please call
Arlene Alegre at 718-824-4220, extension 1038 for
reservations and more information … the gala will be at
Maestro’s and our own Lenny will be providing the musical
entertainment … Father John Flynn will be one of the
honorees.
ACADEMY MEMORIAL MASS---November 6, 2010 at
5:30PM. This Mass will remember those deceased in the

KINDERGARTEN CLASSES … today is the Family Faith
Formation class for all parents who have children in our
elementary school … class begins at 11 am in the
auditorium followed by Mass at 12 noon … attendance will
be taken … all are expected to attend.
LITURGY COMMITTEE … meets Tuesday, October 5 at 7 pm
in the rectory … the Committee is planning for the Parish
Reunion Mass and Reception and Thanksgiving … all are
invited to help in this important project.
PARISH COUNCIL … held its first meeting last week … thank
you to all who attended and to our new chairperson, Mr.
Mario Vega … we will publish the minutes of the meeting on
our website for all to read.
BREAKFAST SALE … the Cursillistas are sponsoring a food
sale on Sunday, October 10 in the cafeteria … all are
welcome to purchase some home-made dishes … there will
be food after all the Masses next Sunday.
COLUMBUS DAY … is Monday, October 11 … the schools and
the offices are closed … only ONE MASS on Columbus Day at
9 am.

PRO-LIFE MEETING … on Wednesday, October 13 at 7:30 pm
in the rectory with Sister Lucy from the Sisters of Life … we
are trying to form a parish committee and this will be the
first meeting … the group will be bi-lingual … you are

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SPECIAL CLASS … on Saturday,
October 23 at 10 am … there will be a special class for all
children in the Sunday program who are preparing for the
sacraments in May … the extra class will be in the Lower
Church … attendance will be taken … Monsignor Graham
will give the class … all must attend.
VOCATIONS NIGHT … St. Frances de Chantal Church under
the direction of Father Michael Sullivan will begin a
monthly VOCATIONS NIGHT for high school and college
students interested in the priesthood … TUESDAY, OCTOBER
5TH AT 7 PM in the church beginning with Mass and followed
by pizza and conversation … families are also welcome …

NEW BAPTISM PROGRAM … as you are aware, the parish is
establishing a new Baptism Program … we will be supplying
godparents for those unable to find godparents on their
own … please consider joining this great endeavor to make
Baptism available for the people of the parish … TWO
MEETINGS will be held on this urgent matter --- Sunday,
October 10 after the 12 noon Mass OR Thursday, October 14
at 7:15 pm … in the FLYNN ROOM … we need your help to
become an official church godparent … you need to attend
only ONE SESSION.

We are back to our regular weekly schedule! Mass at
4:30pm followed by Life Night until 8:30pm.
ANYONE may attend the 4:30 Mass. The Life Night is
open to those in grades 9-12 (8th graders can begin in
March starting with the youth rally on March
6th).Upcoming event: Girl's overnight retreat Sun Oct.
10th-Monday Oct. 11th!!! This is Columbus Day
weekend and there is no school on Monday
Remember what I said last week, (you were
here, I hope. Why would you want to miss
the bulletin-and me) Marriage is the one
sacrament that is done by the participants.
What this means is this: if Fr. Bill has an
off day and says "Oh, by the way, I married them". Please feel free to correct me. I
should say I witnessed their marriage. The
priest, minister, rabbi, judge and even you
-if you get permission from the state - can
witness a marriage. What we do is state
that on such and such an occasion so and
so made their vows before us according to
the rules of the state. By the way judges
treat their obligation with the same seriousness that religious figures do (In fact,
in some cases with a greater seriousness).
Again to summarize: marriage is an act
done by the bride and groom and witnessed
to by some authority. This gives it a basis
in Law! Now that wasn’t too hard was it?
Bet you knew all that. I will have to be
more difficult-St. Raymond's is too smart
for me.
Sun. Oct. 3rd- Life Night on creation, the fall, the
effects of original sin, and God's plan for us to share in
Christ's victory! Sounds like a lot to cover, however we
will be doing an overview in a creative way using skits,
activity, and discussion. The night will end with a
moving video presentation on our redemption in
Christ leading into a prayer service intended to move
our hearts to love and gratitude for what God has done
for us.
Skit practice- continues every Friday from 7-9pm in the
Convent.

prayer group for high school juniors, seniors, and
college age. This is for anyone in that age group who is
ready for some serious discussion about real life
situations and how our faith can lead us through these
in a way that leads to growth and holiness. First group
meeting for young women is Wednesday Oct. 20th 67:30pm at the Convent (1720 Metropolitan Ave.).

pintar y remodelar la Iglesia de abajo la cual usaremos
mientras estemos en el tiempo de renovación de la Iglesia de arriba... También necesitamos tomar una decisión
sobre si se pinta la Iglesia de arriba o no... Parece ser
que la pintura se esta deteriorando y decolorando... Así
que eso se le añadirá a la reparación de las bancas y cojines nuevos, el piso de mármol, azulejos de terracota debajo de las bancas, alargamiento
del Altar, piso nuevo para el Santuario y muebles nuevos para el
Santuario, trabajos eléctricos,
etc... Muy pronto les daremos la
oportunidad de hacer donaciones y
lo que puede ofrecer como memorial. Nuestra hermosa Iglesia antigua gloria! El plan para las renovaciones es: cerrarla iglesia de arriba el 7 de noviembre, usar la iglesia de abajo para nuestras Misas,
confesiones y servicios hasta el 15 de abril y abrir de
nuevo durante la Semana Santa 2011.
DONACION DE SANGRE … es este fin de semana … en el
gimnasio … todavía puedesdonar tu sangre … por favor ve al
gimnasio y habla con Cathy Ryall o con uno de los
voluntarios de la parroquia … su regalo de sangre es un

UNCION DEL LOS ENFERMOS … esta planificada para el
sábado, 16 de octubre en la Misa de las 12 del mediodía en
inglés … en español el sábado, 23 de octubre en la Misa de
las 12 del mediodía en español (la Misa en inglés será en la
Iglesia de abajo ese día).
EL ESTACIONAMIENTO… Se han hecho varias quejas sobre el
estacionamiento. Carros han sido dañados o impactados…
carros usando mas de un espacio..carros estacionados en el
camino de entrada…si venimos a la iglesia, deberíamos de
tener consideración para los demás en el estacionamiento…
si impacta a otro carro, admita el accidente….un carro, un
espacio,…no obstaculice el camino de entrada. No tenemos
a una persona encargada del estacionamiento por lo
tanto dependemos de la cortesía, amabilidad y
responsabilidad de todos... Gracias

LA MISA CONMEMORATIVA PARA LA ACADEMIA es el 6 de

CLASES DE KINDERGARTEN … hoy es la clase de la
Formación de Fe Familia para todos los padres que tienen
niños en nuestra escuela primaria …la clase comienza a las
11 am en el auditorio seguido por la Misa de las 12
mediodía … anotáremos asistencia...esperamos que todos
estén en asistencia.
COMITE DE LA LITURGIA … se reúne el martes, 5 de octubre
a las 7 pm en la rectoría … el Comité esta planificando para
la Misa de la Reunión de la Parroquia y Recepción y Día de
Acción de Gracias … todos están invitados a ayudar en este
proyecto importante.
CONCILIO PARROQUIAL … tuvo su primera reunión la
semana pasada … gracias a todos los que asistieron y a
nuestro nuevo presidente, el Sr. Mario Vega … nosotros
publicaremos los minutos de la reunión en nuestro sitio web
para que todos lean.
VENTA DE DESAYUNO … los Cursillistas van a patrocinar una
venta de comida el domingo, 10 de octubre en la cafetería
… todos están bienvenidos a comprar algunos platos hechos
en casa … habrá comida después de todas las Misas el
próximo domingo.
DIA DE CRISTÓBAL COLON… es el lunes, 11 de octubre … las
escuelas y las oficinas estarán cerradas … sólo UNA MISA en

NUEVO PROGRAMA DE BAUTISMO … como están enterados,
la parroquia esta estableciendo un nuevo Programa de
Bautismo … nosotros estaremos suministrando padrinos para
aquellos que no pueden encontrar a padrinos por sí solo …

Bautismo disponible para las personas de la parroquia …

DOMINGO DE MISION … es el domingo, 24 de octubre …
todos estamos llamados a ser misioneros del Evangelio y

Un festival en honor de la Virgen
del Rosario

El 7 de octubre a las 7:00 PM, misa bilingüe seguido
por el “Rosario viviente”. Patrocinado por las organizaciones devotas a Nuestra Madre.

¿Quién está en control?
Un día un grupo de ancianas judías conversaban sobre
las catástrofes y males del mundo y después de una
alarga letanía de problemas y conflictos, una de ellas
exclamó: “Uno se pregunta quién está en control de
todo”. El enfrentarse con el mal y el dolor en el mundo
siempre levanta preguntas. Es la pregunta que hace el
profeta en la primera lectura y la pregunta que a
menudo nos hacemos todos. ¿Por qué permite Dios todo
lo que ocurre? ¿Es voluntad de Dios tanto dolor?
Por otro lado, sobre todo en esta sociedad
individualista en que vivimos, a veces parece que las
cosas se adquieren o se controlan por mérito propio.
¡Incluso a veces parece que si se toman todas las
precauciones necesarias, se hace el ejercicio que se
debe y se come adecuadamente se puede evitar la
muerte para siempre!
En ambos casos---tanto si se le adscribe a Dios toda la
responsabilidad de lo que ocurre como si piensa que la
propia persona está en control---se está negando la
verdad de la fe. La fe pide una confianza enorme, sin
temores ni angustias. La fe exige que se deje a Dios ser
Dios, luchando mientras tanto por hacer en este mundo
lo que Dios quiere de nosotros. Es decir, tener unas
actitudes y acciones acordes con la llamada que se ha
recibido. Es trabajar como si todo dependería de
nosotros y orar sabiendo perfectamente que todo
depende de Dios. No se puede culpar a Dios de las cosas
que son culpa de las personas por sus acciones o por su
pasividad a veces, ni se puede pensar que por nuestros
propios méritos vamos a conseguir que las cosas
cambien. A nosotros nos toca trabajar y confiar, casi
siempre sin ver el resultado, pero afirmándonos
fuertemente en la promesa de Dios.
La palabra de Jesús, cuando hayan hecho todo lo que
deben, deben decir, “siervos inútiles somos” no se
refiere a que los cristianos tengan que tener una baja
autoestima, sino reconocer que toda gracia y todo
control viene de Dios. Actuamos en fe por la promesa. Y
sabemos que esa fe puede mover montañas.
Para la reflexión
¿En qué momentos he dudado de Dios o me he preguntado
por qué Dios permite que ciertas cosas ocurran en le
mundo? ¿En qué momentos me he sentido frustrado porque
pensaba que todos mis esfuerzos deberían esta dando otros
frutos? ¿Dónde estaba Dios es en ese momento mío?
