We have many doors through which people of all ages are invited to enter, explore, and grow in a deeper knowledge of themselves while discovering the
joy of walking humbly with God. At St. John Berchmans some of those include Baptism Preparation, Catholic School education or the Religious Education
program, PreCana wedding workshops and the RCIA. What and who are behind those doors?
•Baptism Preparation is facilitated by a team of enthusiastic young couples with children who are eager to share the basic tenets of the faith that
make up our baptismal promises.
•Faith is one of the cornerstones of St. John Berchmans’ parish school where prayer and the practice of Catholic beliefs are part of the daily
curriculum.
•Volunteer catechists share their faith on a weekly basis with Religious Education students coming from more than 30 different city schools and
six suburbs to make up our larger parish community.
•The joys and challenges of marriage are shared by a team of parish-based volunteers whose work with the PreCana program reconnects young
adults to the faith and helps them orient their identity as a couple in relationship with the Catholic Church.
•And RCIA, (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) welcomes adult newcomers, as well as those who never completed their religious studies,
into the sacramental life of the Church through preparation and reception of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
The words “humble” and “humility” appear several times in today’s readings and I do believe we are meant to sit up and take notice of them. This is somewhat
ironic because their effectiveness is measured largely in their ability to act upon us without attracting attention to themselves!
These words, humble and humility, are often misinterpreted as signs of weakness – not traits that are valued in our competitive society. But did you know
that the word humble comes from the Latin “humus” which means earth or ground? Humility refers to the quality of being humble or, as I like to believe,
unpretentious and grounded.
In today’s first reading from Sirach we hear, “conduct your affairs with humility.” And in Luke’s Gospel we are told, “For everyone who exalts himself will
be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” While the Gospel’s words might seem like a riddle, the writer C.S. Lewis makes them
understandable to modern times: “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.”
Who do we put first in our lives? What motivates us and what is our expectation of recognition and reward? Today’s Gospel acclamation is a call to action:
“Take my yoke upon you says the Lord and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.”
To truly learn from the Lord we need to leave our egos at the door. It is not about us. It is about grounding ourselves in a faith that teaches us how to
recognize and embody the love of God in our daily lives, channel the Holy Spirit and bring comfort and hope to those in need. As a new school year gets
underway there will be many opportunities to share our faith, extend an invitation, and help others grow. Looking for ideas?
•Welcome and congratulate families whose children are being baptized.
•Pray for all of our students and their families, especially those who will be preparing to receive the sacraments of First Holy Communion and
Confirmation this year.
•If you have family members or friends who are searching for information about the Catholic Church, or who think they would like to become
Catholics, reach out to them and let them know their questions are welcome in our RCIA program.
We often sing these words in church: “We are called to act with justice, we are called to love tenderly, we are called to serve one another, to walk humbly
with God.” Let’s put them to work. The efforts of serving others while building a faith-filled community keeps us grounded and reminds us daily of who we
turn to for strength and inspiration. What greater role model to have than the Lord who says, “Learn from me.”

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Is God calling you to a deeper relationship? Looking for
answers to questions you can’t quite name? Consider joining
our RCIA program. The Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (RCIA) is for anyone 18 and older who would like
to learn more about the Catholic faith and for those who
seek to be baptized, receive First Holy Communion and be
confirmed in the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also help
you complete the necessary steps to become a member
of the Catholic Church if you were baptized in another
Christian denomination. RCIA meets on Thursday evenings,
three times per month from September to April. If you are
interested in learning more, if you know of anyone who
might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are willing
to help as a catechist or sponsor, please contact Shelagh
Donoghue in the parish office.
Labor Day Special Mass Time
Monday, Sept. 5, is Labor Day. There will be one
morning Mass celebrated at 9 a.m. Please mark
your calendars and note there will be no 7 a.m.

POSITIONS OPEN – “Gallery Choir” members: soprano,
alto, tenor and bass.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS – Must be able to carry
light and beautiful musical notes part way across the
Church. Must have vision good enough to see the director
10 feet away. Must have a sense of humor.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED – Must have some time sung,
hummed or whistled a tune in the tub or shower.
ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITY – Those
demonstrating ability and courage may become soloists or
members of quartets.
BEGINNING WAGES – Guaranteed satisfaction and joy
in the service of the Lord.
FRINGE BENEFITS – Social Security in the fellowship of
the other choir members.
HOURS – 7:30pm - 9:00pm on Thursday evenings
(beginning September 8th and thereafter) and 9:00am

the 9:45am Mass.
RETIREMENT – After many years of faithful service to
the Lord, you may sit in the assembly and listen to others
who are willing to sing with the talent that God has given
them!

THE CUP OF OUR LIFE
Are you thirsting for a more disciplined prayer life? This new
six week program will focus on group study and prayer using
Joyce Rupp’s book, “The Cup of Our Life.” Open your eyes
to see how the ordinary cups we use each day can become
sacred vessels that connect us with life and draw us closer to
God. This program will meet Thursdays, Sept. 22-Oct. 27,
from 9-11 a.m. in the St. John Berchmans School Chapel.
Materials will be provided. There is a suggested donation of

Caminar humildemente con Dios
Tenemos muchas puertas a través de las cuales personas de todas las edades están invitadas a entrar, explorar y desarrollar un conocimiento más profundo
de sí mismos y descubrir la alegría de caminar humildemente con Dios. En San Juan Berchmans algunas de esas incluyen la Preparación de Bautismo,
Educación de Escuela Católica o el Programa de Educación Religiosa, talleres de boda PreCaná y RICA. ¿Qué y quiénes están detrás de esas puertas?
•La Preparación de Bautismo es facilitado por un equipo de parejas jóvenes entusiastas con hijos que están deseosos de compartir los principios
básicos de la fe que forman parte de nuestras promesas bautismales.
•La fe es uno de los pilares angulares de la escuela parroquial de San Juan Berchmans, donde la oración y la práctica de creencias católicas son
parte del plan de estudios diario.
•Los catequistas voluntarios comparten su fe semanalmente con los estudiantes de educación religiosa procedentes de más de 30 diferentes
escuelas de la ciudad y seis suburbios para formar parte de nuestra comunidad parroquial.
•Las alegrías y desafíos del matrimonio son compartidos por un grupo de voluntarios parroquiales cuyo trabajo del programa PreCaná es
reconectar a los jóvenes a la fe y les ayuda a orientar su identidad como pareja en relación con la Iglesia Católica.
•Y RICA, (Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos) da la bienvenida a los adultos recién llegados, así como aquellos que nunca terminaron sus
estudios religiosos, en la vida sacramental de la Iglesia a través de la preparación y la recepción del Bautismo, Eucaristía y Confirmación.
Las palabras “humilde” y “humildad” aparecen varias veces en las lecturas de hoy y creo que estamos destinados a pensar y tomar nota de ellas. Esto es algo
irónico ya que su eficacia se mide en gran parte en su capacidad para actuar sobre nosotros sin llamar la atención de sí mismos.
Estas palabras, humilde y humildad, a menudo son mal interpretadas como signos de debilidad - atributos que no son valorados en nuestra sociedad
competitiva. Pero ¿sabía usted que la palabra humilde proviene del latín “humus” que significa tierra o masa? La humildad se refiere a la cualidad de ser
humilde o como me gusta creer, sin pretensiones y con sensatez.
En la primera lectura de hoy, tomada del libro Eclesiástico escuchamos, “en tus asuntos procede con humildad.” Y en el Evangelio de Lucas nos dice:
“Porque el que se engrandece a si mismo, será humillado, y el que se humilla será engrandecido.” Si bien las palabras del Evangelio pueden parecer como
un enigma, el escritor C.S. Lewis las hace perceptible a los tiempos modernos: “la humildad no es pensar menos de uno mismo, sino pensar menos en
uno mismo.”
¿A quién ponemos en primer lugar en nuestras vidas? ¿Que nos motiva y cual es nuestra expectativa de reconocimiento y recompensa? La aclamación
del Evangelio de hoy es una llamada a la acción: “Llevad mi yugo sobre vosotros dice el Señor y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón”.
Para aprender verdaderamente del Señor necesitamos dejar nuestros egos en la puerta. No se trata de nosotros. Se trata de la fundación de nosotros
mismos en una fe que nos enseña a reconocer y encarnar el amor de Dios en nuestra vida cotidiana, por medio del Espíritu Santo y llevar consuelo y
esperanza a los necesitados. Al comenzar el nuevo año escolar, habrá muchas oportunidades para compartir nuestra fe, invitar, y ayudar a otros a crecer.
¿Necesita ideas?
•Dar la bienvenida y felicitar a las familias cuyos hijos están siendo bautizados.
•Orar por todos nuestros estudiantes y sus familias, especialmente aquellos que se preparan para recibir los sacramentos de la Primera
Comunión y la Confirmación este año.
•Si usted tiene familiares o amigos que están buscando información acerca de la Iglesia Católica, o que piensan que les gustaría convertirse en
católicos, acérquese a ellos y hágales saber que sus preguntas son bienvenidas en nuestro programa de RICA.
A menudo cantamos estas palabras en la iglesia: “Estamos llamados a actuar con justicia, estamos llamados a amar con ternura, estamos llamados a servir
a los demás, a caminar humildemente con Dios.” Pongámonos a trabajar. Los esfuerzos de servir a los demás, y construir una comunidad llena de fe nos
mantiene fundados y nos recuerda a diario a quien nos dirigimos en busca de fuerza e inspiración. ¿Qué mayor modelo para tener que el Señor que nos
dice: “Aprende de mí.”

LA COPA DE NUESTRA VIDA
¿Está sediento de una vida de oración más disciplinada? Este nuevo
programa de seis semanas se centrará en un grupo de estudio y

Don’t Forget to Register
August 21, 2016
Religious Education classes begin on Saturday, Sept. 10. Returning
and new students are asked to register for classes as soon as possible. Blue registration forms are available in the back of church, in
the rectory office or on the parish website at: www.stjohnberchmans.org/religious-education.
Students who attended the PreCommunion or PreConfirmation
classes during the 2015-2016 school year must register again for
the coming year so they will be able to make First Holy Communion or Confirmation in 2017.
We are also looking for adults to join our team of volunteer
catechists as teachers and substitutes. Religious Education meets
from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on most Saturdays from September through
April. We provide curriculum materials and training.

Clases de educación religiosa comienzan el sábado 10 de septiembre. Se
pide que los estudiantes nuevos y los que están regresando se registren
