Our culture
Sometimes an erroneous notion regarding humility can
lead some people to lower themselves excessively, perhaps
allowing others to abuse or take advantage of them. A true
sense of humility recognizes that everything good comes
from God and defends human dignity, as a person created
in the image and likeness of God.
Homily reflection
Not too long ago I was praising an immigrant woman
who had raised 11 children alone, and I told her she had
done a great job. She responded that it was surely because
she had been inspired by God. She didn't give any
importance to what she had done and the impact it had on
her children and on their own families. It seemed normal to
her and nothing to show off about. However, there are
people who have to announce everything they do and in
some manner have disdain for what others do. There is a
Spanish adage that says the greatest souls tend to b the
humblest. It is not a humbleness that denies the goo
qualities that God has given, but a humbleness that
recognizes them as gifts.
Humility has the same Latin root as the word humus,
which means ground. One who is humble is close to the
ground and is realistic, knowing just how to approach real
problems, limitations, and pleases the people in their
surroundings. A humble person does not climb over others
or pushes their will, prestige or fame. And a humble person
is not one who goes out saying that he or she is unworthy,
doesn’t know anything and is self-deprecating. This person,
no matter how humble, is unjust because he or she does
not recognize the talents, qualities, and gifts that God has
given them. Such “great” people, in other words, humble
and simple, are those who know all they have and are is in
the service of others. Nothing we have is by our own right
or merit, but form the grace of God. And we do not possess
it for ourselves, but for others. Paul says, “ I am what Ism
through the pure grace of God.”
Surely it is difficult to maintain this attitude in a society
that gives much importance to certain people: civil
authorities and ecclesial authorities, teachers, doctors,
lawyers or famous stars. Perhaps even people with a lot of
money are considered important...even if the money was
obtained by exploiting others. But the gospel makes it
perfectly clear: for Jesus, those who serve others are the
ones who are important.
The woman who cared for 11 children is great as is the
father who sacrifices for his family; those who work elbow
to elbow with others are great, as are those who simply
walk with their God.
For reflection
Who do you consider great or important? If you had to
describe yourself, what words would you use? Are you
capable of making a list of all your good qualities?

WELCOME BACK … we all hope that you enjoyed the
summer break with some rest, relaxation and vacation …

REGISTRATION … for our religious education program
continues with the Pax Christi Sisters in the Flynn Room
on Sundays or in their offices during the week … all
children in our public schools should be registered for
classes for the sacraments, for classes to continue their
religious education and for a greater understanding of
the Catholic faith … we have classes for elementary
school children, teenagers and high school students …

more information … registration is $60 for one child or
$100 for a family. Classes begin on
SEMINARY COLLECTION … on Saturday, September 11
and Sunday, September 12 we will have a guest speaker
from St. Joseph’s Seminary to explain the seminary
system and to ask your donations in the special
collection … his name is James Benavides and the
collection will be taken up on the following weekend …
we ask your prayers and generosity.
MISSION COLLECTION … we thank you for your generosity
to the work of the missions and Father Augustine who
spoke here was delighted with his reception and
welcoming … the collection amounted to $1,326.00 …
again, thank you!
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS … are opening and we have a few
seats available on a first come, first serve basis … family
discounts are extended to those who have children in
the elementary and high schools together … please call
the principals for an appointment.
ADULTS … for the RCIA PROGRAM … should also register
with the Pax Christi Sisters … we have programs in
English and in Spanish for adults only for Baptism,
Communion and Confirmation.
PARISH COUNCIL … our first meeting is Monday,
September 27 at 7:30 pm in the Flynn Room … all
members should attend; visitors are welcome … we will
be planning for the year, especially for the Parish
Reunion Sunday in October.
MARRIAGE COLUMN … I have asked Father Brogan to
begin a column for the bulletin about Marriage and the
Sacrament of Matrimony … I am sure you will find it very
interesting and informative … we will begin the column
in a few weeks … stay tuned.
ACADEMY 50TH ANNIVERSARY MASS … all are invited on
Sunday, September 26 at 12 noon to celebrate 50 years
of Catholic education at our Girls’ Academy … call the
Academy for additional information and spread the word
to alums.
GODPARENTS … the priests of the parish are very
concerned that the number of Baptisms here in the
parish have declined in the recent months … one of the
reasons for the decline seems to be godparents --- that
our families do not know godparents who are practicing
Catholics (Catholics who are baptized, confirmed,
married in the church and have been confirmed) … we
hope to begin a team of parishioners who could serve as
church godparents for baptism and assist these families
by their example, interest and prayers … Father Brogan
will begin to put together a team of PARISH TEAM … we
know that we can count on you to help our families.
MASSES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT … you are invited to join
with our schools as they officially open the year asking
the blessing of the Holy Spirit upon the school
administration, faculty and students … FRIDAY,
SEPTEMBER 10 AT 12 NOON WITH THE ACADEMY; FRIDAY,

EXPOSITION AND ADORATION OF THE BLESSED
SACRAMENT … we have this beautiful time of prayer
after the 12 Noon Mass on Fridays … spend some time
with Jesus in the church … we end with Benediction at

come to confession --- it is good for the soul.
2011 MASS BOOK … is available in the rectory … if you
wish a particular date for a Mass in memory of a
deceased loved one or for another special occasion,
please see Debbie … the usual stipend (offering) is $15.
PARISH ENVELOPES … all adults should be registered in
the parish … come to the rectory for registration … you
will receive church envelopes … and if you need a letter
for sponsorship as a godparent or for financial records,
we can check your registration … you need to be
registered!
WHY ARE SO MANY LATE FOR CHURCH? … perhaps, this is
a good time to ask yourself that question … it is not
unusual for people to be walking in late for Mass and
very often it is the same people! … we do try to begin
the Mass on time so, please, check your own schedule
and arrive on time --- just like Broadway, Yankee
Stadium, a concert --- you do not want to miss a
moment of Mass.
CEMETERY/BURIAL PLANS … you can prepare for your
grave, your burial, your wake and your Mass beforehand
… sometimes the pain of death is overwhelming and
confusing for loved ones and families … think about the
many details now and plan … see your local funeral
director, visit the Cemetery Office and speak with one
of the priests.
CHURCH RENOVATIONS … we have started to repair and
to paint our Lower Church which will be used during the
renovation period … also a decision needs to be made
about painting the Upper Church. It seems that there is
chipping paint and de-coloring of the paint … so that will
be added to the list along with pew repairs and new
cushions, a marble floor, terracotta tiles under the
pews, enlargement of the altar, new sanctuary floor and
sanctuary furniture, electrical work, etc. … shortly we
will announce giving opportunities and memorial items
… our beautiful church will be restored to its former
glory! The Plan is to close the Upper Church on November
7th, to use the Lower Church for our Masses, confessions,
and services until April 15th, and reopen for Holy Week
2011!

Noon Mass. Some members of LIFE TEEN will be at this
Mass and reception to assist in whatever way needed.

7pm for anyone (teens, Core, support team) interested in
helping to plan the kick-off.
Sun. Sept. 12th – 4:30 MASS resumes!!! Life Night after Mass
at the usual time (6-8:30pm) at the Convent (1720
Metropolitan Ave.).
Sun. Sept. 19th – LIFE TEEN KICK-OFF!!! This year’s kick-off
will be a super high energy event that spoofs the MTV music
awards. Can’t tell you anymore or it will ruin all the surprises

4th Annual Young Adult Retreat at Graymoor,Garrison, NY
– On Saturday, Sept.11th 9:30am-5:30pm. We will car pool
from St. Raymond’s. Please contact Sr. Mary Eileen if you
would like to attend or if you can help with driving. Cost is
$27 and includes coffee on arrival & lunch. The theme is “In
This World but Not Of It” Jn 17:14-18. Guest speaker is Fr.
Brian McSweeney (Our Lady of Loretto Parish, Cold Spring,
NY). We have been doing this retreat with several other
young adult groups for the past 3 years. Includes Mass,
Eucharistic Adoration, Confessions, and free time to walk the
beautiful grounds. St. Raymond’s Worship Band (plays at
LIFE TEEN Mass) will lead the music. A wonderful
opportunity to put aside the day-to-day to be open to God
in a deeper way. In our busy world, this is something very
needed.

católicos practicantes (católicos que estén bautizados,
confirmados, casados en la iglesia y hayan sido

iglesia para el bautismo y ayudar a estas familias con su
ejemplo, interés y oraciones … el Padre Brogan
comenzará a poner junto un equipo del EQUIPO DE
PARROQUIA … sabemos que podemos contar con ustedes
para ayudar a nuestras familias.
50 ANIVERSARIO DE LA ACADEMIA DE NIÑAS … todo están

Ciertas cosas no nos ayudan a Orar en la Iglesia--Celulares, textos, comida, bebidas... Les pedimos que
no traiga chicle a la Iglesia y les recordamos que la ropa
que usa para ir a Orchard Beach no es la ropa apropiada
para venir a la Iglesia... Recordemos que estamos en la
Santa Presencia de Dios.
decolorando... Así que eso se le añadirá a la reparación
de las bancas y cojines nuevos, el piso de mármol,
azulejos de terracota debajo de las bancas,
alargamiento del Altar, piso nuevo para el Santuario y
muebles nuevos para el Santuario, trabajos eléctricos,
etc... Muy pronto les daremos la oportunidad de hacer
donaciones y lo que puede ofrecer como memorial.
Nuestra hermosa Iglesia antigua gloria! El plan para las
renovaciones es: cerrarla iglesia de arriba el 7 de
noviembre, usar la iglesia de abajo para nuestras Misas,
confesiones y servicios hasta el 15 de abril y abrir de
nuevo durante la Semana Santa 2011.

RENOVACIONES DE LA IGLESIA... Hemos comenzado a
pintar y remodelar la Iglesia de abajo la cual usaremos
mientras estemos en el tiempo de renovación de la
Iglesia de arriba... También necesitamos tomar una
decisión sobre si se pinta la Iglesia de arriba o no...
Parece ser que la pintura se esta deteriorando y

Nuestra cultura
A veces un concepto algo erróneo de la humildad hace que
algunas personas se abajen a si mismas excesivamente, dando
paso quizá a unas conductas abusivas y dominantes por parte
de otros. Un verdadero sentido de la humildad reconoce que
todo lo bueno que se tiene viene de Dios, y defiende la
dignidad humana, como persona hecha a imagen y semejanza
de Dios.
Reflexiones para la homilía
Hace poco una mujer inmigrante y pobre que había
criado a 11 hijos ella solita me decía cuando yo le
comentaba que tenía mucho mérito que seguramente seria
porque Dios la había inspirado. Ella no daba mayor
importancia a lo que había hecho y al efecto que eso había
tenido en la vidas de sus hijos y de la familias que ahora
han formado ellos. Le parecía lo normal. Nada de lo que
debería presumir. Sin embargo, hay otras personas que
pregonan cualquier cosita que hacen, y de alguna manera
menosprecian lo que hacen los demás. Hay un dicho
español que dice que las lamas más grandes suelen ser las
más sencillas. Es decir, las más humildes. No es una
humildad que niegue las buenas cualidades que le ha dado
Dios, sino una humildad que las reconoce como dones.
Humildad tiene la mima raíz latina que la palabra
humus, es decir suelo. El humilde está cercano al suelo y
eso quiere decir que es realista, que se sabe acercar a los
verdaderos problemas, limitaciones y satisfacciones de las
personas en su alrededor. No se levanta sobre los demás, ni
hace valer su autoridad, su prestigio o su fama. Pero la
persona humilde tampoco es la que va diciendo que no
sirve, que no vale, que no sabe, y se insulta a si misma. Esa
persona, más que humilde, es injusta, porque no reconoce
los dones y cualidades, los regalos que Dios ha puesto en
ella.
Tales personas “grandes”, es decir, humildes y sencillas,
son las que saben que todo lo que tienen y son está en
función del servicio a los demás. Porque nada de lo que se
tiene es por derecho o mérito propio, sino por gracia de
Dios. Y no se tiene para si mismo, sino para los demás. Soy
lo que soy, dice San Pablo, por pura gracia de Dios.
Seguramente es difícil mantener esta actitud porque en
esta sociedad se da importancia a ciertas personas:
autoridades civiles y eclesiásticas, maestros, doctores,
abogados, o estrella famosas. Quizá incluso se consideren
importantes las personas que tienen mucho dinero…incluso
si ese dinero se logra por explotación de otros. Pero el
evangelio lo deja bien claro. Para Jesús los importantes son
quienes sirven a los demás.
Es grande la mujer que cuidó a sus once hijos. Es grande
el padre que se sacrifica por los suyos. Es grande quien
trabaja codo a codo con otros. Es grande quien camina
sencillamente con sus Dios.
Para la reflexión
¿A quiénes consideras grandes o importantes? Si tuvieras que
describirte a ti mismo, ¿qué palabras positivas utilizarías?
¿Serias capaz de hacer una lista de tus buenas cualidades?
