que en esa parroquia no
te van a dejar celebrarlo.
Además, deberíamos
hacerlo aquí, en nuestra propia parroquia”.
“¿Por qué? ¿No querrás que bauticemos a nuestra hija
en la parroquia del barrio, tan vieja y tan desarreglada?”
La pregunta quedó flotando en el aire. Pero además, se
le quedó a Felipe en la cabeza. El veía clara la diferencia
entre San Miguel y la parroquia de su barrio. La de San
Miguel estaba en un barrio de clase media alta y todos
los feligreses hacían su contribución mensualmente para
el mantenimiento de la iglesia y sus actividades. Por
eso estaba tan bonita y cuidada. En la de su barrio eran
muchos los que iban a misa, pero pocos los que hacían
una contribución y menos los que se han inscrito porque.
en nuestros países de origen no es costumbre. Aquí,
como la Iglesia no tiene otros medios de mantenimiento,
depende totalmente de la contribución de los fieles.
No es que la gente del barrio fuese tan pobre.
Tampoco eran ricos, ciertamente. La verdad es que
el barrio había mejorado mucho en los últimos años.
Cuando iban llegando, hace ya tiempo, entonces sí
eran pobres. Habían salido de su país con apenas la
ropa que llevaban. No es que hubiesen dejado muchas
cosas atrás. Más bien es que no tenían casi nada que
llevarse. La llegada a este nuevo país había sido difícil.
Sólo la acogida de la parroquia los ayudó a salir adelante
los primeros meses. Luego, una vez que encontraron

finish. “Let’s see how
you manage that! That
parish is not going to let
us do it there. I think
we should do it here, in
our own parish and neighborhood.”
“Are you serious?” replied Felipe. “Do you really want
us to baptize our daughter in an old, decrepit church like
our parish?”
The question was left in the air. It stayed with Felipe.
He saw a clear difference between St. Michael’s and his
own parish. St. Michael’s was located in a middle-class
neighborhood, and all the parishioners contributed
regularly to its upkeep and activities. It was well kept
and very nice. Felipe’s parish, on the other hand, was
well attended, but few people had registered and fewer
still made regular contributions to it.
It wasn’t that people in the neighborhood were poor.
They weren’t rich, but they weren’t poor either—they
were managing. The neighborhood had improved a lot in
recent years.
When immigrants started arriving quite a few years
back, the parish was poor. The immigrants had left
their country with next to nothing, and their struggle
in a new country had been hard. The only thing that
had helped them to get along during the first months
was the welcoming of the parish. Then they found jobs,
eventually bought homes, repaired them, and started
acquiring things.
Felipe was proud that, through their own efforts, the

spiritual gifts but the same
Spirit. There are different forms
of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but
the same God who produces all
of them in everyone. To each
individual the manifestation of the
Spirit is given for some benefit.

necesitamos para arreglar la iglesia,
pero tenemos que atender a otras
muchas necesidades que también
son urgentes y no se puede hacer
todo al mismo tiempo. Con todo,
estoy seguro de que, poco a poco, y con la fuerza que
da el estar unidos y colaborar todos en la misma obra,
lograremos que la parroquia siga siendo el centro del barrio
y que todos los que vienen a ella encuentren aquí acogida y
ayuda. Y por supuesto, todos los que quieran venir a formar
parte de la comunidad y colaborar son bienvenidos.”
Ahora Felipe empezó a recordar que, como cristiano, a
veces se había limitado a hacer oraciones y novenas, pero se
le olvidaba que formar parte de la iglesia es algo más. Ahora
sentía que Dios lo llamaba a una familia, a una comunidad.
El sacerdote le dijo: “No te estoy pidiendo que me
ayudes a mí personalmente. Te estoy sugiriendo que
regreses a la familia de Dios con todo lo que eso significa,
siendo miembro activo de la parroquia. Por ejemplo, estoy
seguro de que podrías ayudar en el grupo de parejas que se
preparan para el matrimonio. Tu experiencia de fe en tu vida
matrimonial podría ayudar a otros. Y además, naturalmente
que te tendrías que responsabilizar más económicamente.
Sería una forma de que te sintieses responsable de lo que se
hace aquí. Dejarías entonces de ver la parroquia como un
edificio del barrio y la verías como una extensión de tu casa.
Un lugar donde la familia se agranda hasta abarcar a todo la
comunidad. Y, de algún modo, todo lo que aquí se haga en
nombre de Jesús lo harás tú también.”
Felipe asintió. No se trataba sólo de aumentar su
contribución económica a la parroquia, sino que también
sería buena idea poner sus dones y talentos al servicio
de la comunidad, para el bien de otros. Ahora se daba
cuenta, también, de que la niña debería ser bautizada en
la parroquia, “su” parroquia para que ya desde el principio
aprendiese el valor y significado de la comunidad cristiana.

Now Felipe started remembering that, as a Christian,
he sometimes had limited himself to doing some novenas
and saying some prayers, but that he
had forgotten that being part of the
church is something more. Now he
was feeling called by God to a family,
a community.
The priest said, “I am not asking
you to help me personally. I am
suggesting that you return to the
family of God, accepting all that
means, and being an active member
of the parish. For instance, I am sure
you could help with the couples
preparing for marriage. If your faith grows stronger, that
and your experience in your marriage and family life could
help many of the young people preparing for marriage. In
addition, of course, you should contribute more financially.
That would be a way for you to feel more responsible for
what goes on here at the parish. You would cease seeing the
church as one more building in the neighborhood, and it
would become for you an extension of your home. This is
a place where the family expands to encompass the whole
community. In some ways, whatever is done here in the
name of God will be done by you, too.”
Felipe agreed. It wasn’t only a matter of increasing his
financial contribution to the parish; it would also be a
good idea to place his talents and gifts at the service of the
community, for the good of others. He now fully realized
that his daughter would have to be baptized at the parish,
“her” parish, so that from the beginning she could learn the
meaning and value of the Christian community.
