My brothers and sisters in Christ, This Sunday is celebrated as Trinity Sunday in most of the churches throughout Christendom. It is an unusual feast as it is unlike most other feasts in the church. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus. Easter marks the Resurrection of our Lord. The Feasts of the Baptism of the Lord and the Transfiguration mark those other events in history when Jesus performed a certain act that helped save us. The solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity honors the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who we honor every Sunday when we sing the Gloria to the Lord. At the same time when we are honoring the Blessed Trinity, we will also be honoring the Uganda Martyrs whose feast day is June 3rd. Ugandans from other parts of the world and from different parts of the US will be joining us to honor those brave Christians who died for the faith. They worked in the court of the King in Uganda, but through the teaching of the Missionaries they learned about another king – the True King – the King of hearts and minds – the King of the Soul – the King of life who was worth dying for – Christ the King. Please know that you are all encouraged to attend this solemn celebration this Sunday at 2:00 PM led by Bishop Egidio from Kasese, Uganda. Blessed Trinity Day and happy Martyrs Day to all. Father Michael Nolan ANOINTING OF THE SICK The next Mass with the anointing of the sick is scheduled for this Monday, June 4th at 12:10. Anyone in need of physical healing is encouraged to come forward for the anointing. Anyone who is physically healthy is encouraged to come and pray for the sick. CONFIRMATION Last Sunday, 25 people were confirmed by Bishop Egidio Nkaijanabwo. The sacrament of Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism and increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit, just as such graces were granted to the Apostles on Pentecost. May the newly confirmed be enriched with the strength of the Holy Spirit and continue to be true witnesses of Christ throughout their lives: Reina Aguilar Mauricio Arboleda Yemby Barrera Claire Chiodini Justin Deveaux Laura Duran Sandra Franco Jacqueline Garcia Karla Rengifo Gaviola Jennifer Gonzalez Transito Gonzalez Otto D. VINCENT de PAUL As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day. Believing in this, our lives can then overflow in thanksgiving and praise. Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to believe in the mystery of God’s love for them. Thank you for your continued support of this parish ministry. O Holy Trinity, truly you are a God of mystery, a God of majesty, a God of presence, a God of creative power. Give us hearts filled with gratitude. Amen. STATUS OF HAITI RECONSTRUCTION FUND We’ve collected an additional $544.50 to bring the new total to help rebuild St. Peter’s Church in Haiti to $33,652.63. Also, see the informational video on our website stmarywaltham.org. Please keep saving coins for St. Peter’s. Thank you! SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK In 2009 we began including a Psalm in the bulletin to encourage the reading of Scripture. There are 150 Psalms and we are on Psalm 118 this week. Please read and meditate on this Psalm throughout the week: PSALM CXVIII Hymn of Thanksgiving to the Savior of Israel Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.” Let the house of Aaron say, “His mercy endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord say, “His mercy endures forever.” In my straits I called upon the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is with me; I fear not; what can man do against me? The Lord is with me to help me, and I shall look down upon my foes. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. All the nations encompassed me; in the name of the Lord I crushed them. They encompassed me on every side; in the name of the Lord I crushed them. They encompassed me like bees, they flared up like fire among thorns; in the name of the Lord I crushed them. I was hard pressed and was falling, but the Lord helped me. My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just: “The right hand of the Lord has struck with power: the right hand of the Lord is exalted; the right hand of the Lord has struck with power.” I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Though the Lord has indeed chastised me, yet he has not delivered me to death. Open to me the gates of justice; I will enter them and give thanks to the Lord. This gate is the Lord’s; the just shall enter it. I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me and have been my savior. The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the Lord has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. O Lord, grant salvation! O Lord, grant prosperity! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; we bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has given us light. Join in procession with leafy boughs up to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I give thanks to you; O my God, I extol you. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his kindness endures forever. SPIRITUAL TEACHING OF DESERT MONKS Sand into Cereal They also said about Saint Abba Macarius the Alexandrian that when he was a young man living in Alexandria he was a mime by trade and was world-famous. When he had become a monk, exalted in virtue in the desert places, his fellow mimes heard that he had become exalted in God’s work. (Jn 6:29; 1 Cor 15:58) They came to see him in the desert, seven in number, and when they had greeted him they sat beside him. They were full of admiration for him and his way of life. When it came time for them to eat, he put water in the pot and carried it to the oven, wanting to cook some cereal for them. While he heated the water to bring it to a boil, before he poured the meal into the pot he sat and chatted with them as he had when he had been a mime living in the world. When they saw how he was behaving, they said to one another, ‘Weren’t we told that he had become a man of God? Now look – he’s the same as he was when he was in the world with us. We don’t see any change from the way he behaved when he was with us in Alexandria’. When Abba Macarius saw them speaking to one another about the great freedom of speech he used with them, he brought in an empty dish, gave it to the greatest among them, and said to him, ‘Fill this dish with sand and pour it into the pot so we can cook the cereal and eat’. When they heard ‘sand’, they joked among themselves, saying ‘Truly Macarius has become more of a mime now than when he was with us in the world!’ Once again he said to them, ‘Do what I told him’. They obeyed him: they filled the plate with sand and poured it into the pot. He made the cereal and it turned out like a cereal made from tasty wheat. When the seven mimes saw the miracle that had taken place through the holy old man Abba Macarius, they did not return to Egypt but renounced the world. They became monks and adopted the practices of the holy old man Abba Macarius. 133 CLUB NAME STREET CITY, STATE, & ZIP TELEPHONE 133 CLUB PROMOTION- THANK YOU Many thanks to those who have already responded to last weekend’s appeal for the 133 Club. 53 numbers have been sold so far. We would like to complete the restoration of the sanctuary floor in the next few months. We have received one generous donation of $5,000 from a parishioner towards this work. We still need over $20,000 to complete the job. Instead of holding a fundraiser at this time, over the next few weeks, we will encourage parishioners to purchase the remaining open 133 Club numbers. There are approximately 300 open numbers at this time. If all of these numbers were purchased we would raise over $17,000. We ask everyone who has not purchased a number to buy one or two. We also ask everyone who has a number to purchase an additional number. This gives you a better chance of winning the monthly prizes totaling $2,000 and raises money for the restoration. Each month, every member of the 133 Club receives a letter about parish news along with a list of the winners. Let us remember that we have been blessed with the restoration of the church without having a capital campaign or fundraiser. Please help us complete the work for the glory of the Lord. Sign up sheets can be found at the doors of the church and will be in the bulletin over the next few weeks. Thanks for your consideration. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR YOUR MARRIAGE? ATTACKS ON GOD- 19 Egypt: Christians convicted, Muslims acquitted for violence A dozen Christians have just been sentenced to life imprisonment for their role in violence that took place in the northcentral Egyptian city of Minya in April 2011. Eight Muslims were acquitted. The violence had erupted after a Muslim bus driver became angry over a speed bump in front of a wealthy Christian's home. The bus driver got into an argument with the home’s security guards who then beat him up. Upon returning to his home village, the Muslim driver assembled a group of people to get revenge for the alleged wrong and the violence suffered. The retaliation squad was joined by groups of Islamic extremists, who surrounded the homes of Christians, intending to launch an attack. In fear of being overwhelmed, the inhabitants opened fire from the roofs of buildings, killing two people in the crowd and wounding two others. In the days following, Muslim groups torched dozens of Christian houses and shops to avenge the dead. CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES A number of parishioners are graduating from Waltham High School this Sunday. Congratulations to them and their families. I would like to make particular mention of two graduates, Jen Mark and Richard Rivera, who faithfully show up and serve the 8:00 AM Mass each Sunday. Congratulations to you all for your perseverance and work. May the good work begun in you by the Lord be brought to fulfillment. MASSACHUSETTS CATHOLIC BUSINESS ASSOC.
