Opportunities
La Sociedad Americana Contra el cáncer tiene programas y servicios para ayudar a las personas con cáncer y a
sus seres queridos para aprender acerca del cáncer, como manejar sus vidas durante el tratamiento y encontrar el
apoyo emocional que necesitan. Todos los servicios son gratis: información y referencias disponibles 24 horas al
día, 7 días a la semana, 365 días al año al 1-800-ACS-2345 y www.cancer.org. Programas comunitarios y de lugar de
trabajo incluyen boletines informativos del lugar de trabajo, Asistente de Recordatorio de la Salud, presentaciones

Proveer servicios para disminuir el sufrimiento del cáncer a las familias de Nuevo México. Todos los servicios son gratuitos y están disponibles para cualquier persona de Nuevo México que se encuentre luchando contra el cáncer. Los
servicios incluyen: Retiros para cuidar a enfermos de Cáncer destinados a familias (retiros educativos de tres días, cada
primavera y otoño, en el que se darán las herramientas y la información de cómo manejar el tratamiento y el proceso
de supervivencia). Asistencia burocrática, Legal, de Seguros y servicios Financieros del programa de “LIPA” (clínicas
y herramientas para manejar un rango amplio de asuntos legales, financieros, y de seguros). Las Bolsas de Recursos
para Familias con Cáncer (un kit de información para ayudar a padres que recientemente han sido diagnosticados con
cáncer y orientación de cómo hablar del proceso del cáncer con sus hijos). Programa de Apoyo para Cuidadores (los
cuidadores con experiencia se emparejan con cuidadores nuevos para dar consejo y apoyo), la encuesta de Servicios
de Cáncer en Nuevo México (una encuesta del estado para entender los servicios de cura y prevención del cáncer en
Nuevo México).

Cancer Support Now, Inc. (CSNI) es una organización de miembros creada por sobrevivientes de cáncer y lo que los
cuidan, para construir y sostener una comunidad active de personas quienes han sido afectados por un diagnóstico
de cáncer con oportunidades para quienes se enfrentan con cáncer para proveen y reciban apoyo. CSNI ofrece,
para gratis, grupos de apoyo facilitados por sobrevivientes de cáncer y apoyo individual en todas etapas de cáncer,
fin de vida, y en sentimientos mientras se enfrentan la muerte. Los servicios son proporcionados por sobrevivientes
de cáncer quienes son veteranos de cáncer y también completaron entrenamiento en cuestiones de cáncer.
Definimos a “sobreviviente de cáncer” aquellos incluyen a todos diagnosticados con cáncer desde el momento
de diagnóstico y por el resto de sus vidas y a sus miembros de familia y amigos cercanos. Apoya y referencias
es solamente una llamada de distancia en nuestra línea de ayuda, que se contesta siete días de la semana por
un sobreviviente de cáncer. CSNI también ofrece apoyo y educación para los que tienen efectos secundarios a
largo plazo de cáncer y de su tratamiento en nuestra Conferencia Anual de Sobrevivientes de Cáncer. Nosotros no
ofrecemos consejos profesionales, consultas y servicios.

Casa Esperanza es un alojamiento fuera de casa para dar servicio a pacientes de cáncer fuera de la ciudad y sus
familiares. Casa Esperanza proporciona servicios simples a los pacientes como en casa, y familias pueden encontrar
falta en instalaciones comerciales. Tenemos cuatro cocinas centrales, y un amplio comedor para la comunidad donde
ahí ay interacción terapéutica y se comparte entre familias. Ofrecemos un programa de consejería clínica gratis
para los residentes y un programa para ayudar a pacientes con cáncer, sobrevivientes y el acceso de las familias que
necesitan servicios de salud, financiera y social. Casa Esperanza crea un ambiente positivo donde el apoyo emocional
es abundante. Lo más importante, las familias pueden permanecer juntos afrontando los retos de la supervivencia con
cáncer. Casa Esperanza aloja hasta 28 familias cada noche. El número del Programa de donación de vehículo es: 505266-4427.

La misión de El Fondo de Cáncer de Niños de Nuevo México es ayudar a niños y sus familias con las necesidades
emocionales, económicas y educacionales de cada día cuando se lucha contra el cáncer. El Fondo de Cáncer de
Niños de Nuevo México ofrece a niños y sus familias: Premios de Valor para recompensar a los niños por su valor;
gasolina y vales para comestibles y otra asistencia económica para las familias que pasan apuros; asistencia de
funeral para las familias cuyo niño o niña han perdido la batalla contra el cáncer; y becas postsecundarias para
cualquier niño o niña que haya sido tratado de cáncer en Nuevo México.

Comadre a Comadre se dedica a servir a las mujeres hispanas/latinas y a sus seres queridos por medio de la
defensa, educación, información, servicios y apoyo para la salud de los senos y el cáncer del seno. Todos nuestros

Holland’s Rose es una organización voluntaria dedicada a aliviar la carga económica para personas que necesitan
viajar a Albuquerque para cuidado médico al proveer alojamiento a bajo costo. A los huéspedes se les provee
alojamiento hogareño a bajo costo; dormitorio y baño privado, cocina y lavadero totalmente equipados, teléfono
local e internet. Los voluntarios se esmeran en satisfacer las necesidades de las personas que reciben varios
tratamientos médicos; servimos especialmente a pacientes que se encuentran solos. Por medio de nuestros
voluntarios, podemos coordinar transportación a citas y tratamientos médicos. Un ambiente hogareño diseñado
para las necesidades de aquellos que reciben tratamientos médicos o a sus familiares quienes los apoyan.

La LLS es la organización voluntaria de salud más importante del mundo dedicada al cáncer de la sangre. La

El Programa de Detección Temprana del Cáncer Cervical y de Seno del Departamento de Salud Pública de Nuevo
México está dedicado a mejorar el acceso a los servicios de revisión del cáncer cervical y de seno de alta calidad
y servicios diagnósticos para mujeres que no se les sirve adecuadamente, y aumentar el conocimiento mediante
la educación acerca de la prevención, procesos de enfermedades, y la importancia de exámenes anuales para la
detección temprana. El Programa de Detección Temprana del Cáncer Cervical y de Seno (BCC por sus siglas en
inglés) provee los servicios indicados de acuerdo a la edad y el estándar aceptado de revisión y diagnósticos de
cáncer cervical y del seno. Estos servicios son ofrecidos a mujeres de bajos ingresos en el estado. Para ser elegible,
una mujer debe tener por lo menos 30 años de edad o más, no tener seguro médico y tener ingreso limitado.
Servicios de detección incluyen exámenes pélvicos y de seno, Papanicolaou, y las mamografías son gratis para

El Prostate Cancer Support Association of New Mexico es una organización sin fines de lucro y grupo de voluntarios
sirviendo el estado de Nuevo México. Fuimos fundado en 1991 por Von Rae Shipp con el objetivo de proveer
educación a hombres y sus familias acerca de la detección y el tratamiento del cáncer de próstata. Ofrecemos
reuniones de grupo de apoyo dos veces al mes, lista de presentadores, un grupo de “A los amigos les importa” y

La Casa de Caridad de Ronald McDonald provee un hogar temporáneo para familias con niños enfermos.
Empezado en 1982, Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico (RMHC-NM) ha tenido una mission sin
cambio y sin igual de proveer alojamiento, confort y la atención a las familias con niños enfermos o heridos. La
fundación del programa RMHC-NM es Ronald McDonald House Hospedaje Programa que sirve a las familias
de cualquier gravemente enfermo o herido bebé o niño que residan a más de 50 millas que necesitan recibir
tratamiento en régimen de internamiento o ambulatorio desde cualquier proveedor medico en Albuquerque para
cualquier diagnosis. RMHC-NM proporciona también dos habitaciones Familiares Ronald McDonald para prestar
apoyo dentro del hospital. Estas habitaciones ofrecen un lugar especial de descanso, relajación y privacidad dentro
de las paredes de la UNM Children’s Hospital y el Hospital Presbiteriano donde los padres están a pocos pasos de

El Centro de Cáncer de la UNM es el Centro de Cáncer Oficial de Nuevo México, el único centro de cáncer
designado por el Instituto Nacional del Cáncer en el estado, y uno de sólo 68 centros oncológicos designados por
el NCI en todo el país. Reconocido por su excelencia científica, las contribuciones a la investigación y la entrega de
los avances médicos del cáncer a los pacientes y sus familias, el Centro de Cáncer de la UNM es el hogar del equipo

New Mexico Cancer Council Initiatives
2016
The New Mexico Cancer Council is a voluntary collaborative effort of diverse
public and private partners working together to foster coordination and
collaboration among cancer related organizations to reduce the burden of
cancer in New Mexico. To date, the partnership has grown to include over 40
local, regional and national organizations that are actively supporting the vision
and mission of the Council. The Council produces the New Mexico Cancer Plan,
which serves as a roadmap for cancer control and prevention in our state.
The Cancer Plan describes what cancer looks like in New Mexico, including
data on the most prevalent cancers, health inequities, and cancer care issues
including prevention, detection, treatment and palliative care. It also contains
goals and objectives for reducing the burden of cancer and addressing health
inequities based on national objectives and issues unique to our state.
This year, the New Mexico Cancer Council is focusing its efforts on several
priority areas, including increasing access to survivorship information,
transportation services, patient navigation services, and smoke-free housing;
increasing colorectal cancer screening rates; and beginning to plan for
development of the next iteration of the New Mexico Cancer Plan. More
