Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
World Youth Day in Krakow: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy”
This week, the universal Church focuses in prayerful solidarity on World Youth Day in Krakow, where WYD’s
founder, Saint John Paul II, served as archbishop. Its theme coincides with that of Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of
Mercy: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Today’s Gospel echoes the same
theme, as Jesus unites prayer with mercy in “The parable of the persistent friend.” Jesus teaches us not only what
words to pray, but what deeds must match authentic prayer. How beautifully down-to-earth is Jesus’ portrait of a
God who can be trusted to do what is best for us. A pesky neighbor disturbs a sleeping friend and disrupts the
household. Yet beautiful images unfold. Persevering prayer receives active, practical mercy in loaves of bread,
recalling Luke’s unique expression for the Eucharist, “the breaking of bread” (Luke 24:35; Acts 2:42). WYD, the
Jubilee, and Jesus thus unite to define perfect prayer as persevering communion with God and unconditional mercy
toward our neighbor.

KEEP PRAYING
St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known
as “the persistent mother.” She watched her oldest son, Augustine,
turn his back on his Christian faith.
Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly
to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was
better to talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about God.
The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually
Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained
and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one
of the Church’s greatest scholars.
Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer.
Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord,
continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in
Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek
and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to
you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS ... just a few words about the
procedure ... when a person dies, it is customary for the family to have
a wake, a viewing of one or two days in a funeral home ... then the
body is brought to church by the family and friends for Mass ...
sometimes the body is cremated and then buried ... usually the body is
brought directly to the cemetery for burial ... all families should
prepare for death, the funeral, the cemetery plot ... the priests can help
you but you should contact the funeral home for pre-preparations and
visit the cemetery to see the different grave plots and areas that are

ARREGLOS PARA UN FUNERAL ... sólo unas pocas palabras
acerca del procedimiento ... cuando una persona muere, es habitual que
la familia tenga un velorio, vigilia de uno o dos días en una
funeraria ... entonces el cuerpo es llevado a la iglesia por la familia y
amigos para la misa ... a veces el cuerpo es cremado y luego
enterrado ... por lo general el cuerpo se traslada directamente al
cementerio para el entierro ... todas las familias deben prepararse para
la muerte, el entierro, el terreno en el cementerio ... los sacerdotes
pueden ayudarle pero usted debe ponerse en contacto con la funeraria
para hacer estos arreglos pre-preparados y visitar el cementerio para
ver las distintas tumbas y áreas que están disponibles para usted, así
como los nichos para el entierro de las cenizas ... un funeral puede ser
costoso y por eso una familia debe hacer algunas preparaciones de
antemano ... LOS RESTOS (CENIZAS) son tratados como un cuerpo
y siempre deben ser enterrados NO SE DEBEN QUEDAR EN LA
CASA, ROCIAR EN EL OCÉANO O DIVIDIR ENTRE
MIEMBROS DE LA FAMILIA ... LAS CENIZAS SON TRATADAS
COMO UN CUERPO CON RESPETO Y CON UN ENTIERRO.

FESTIVIDAD DE LA ASUNCIÓN DE LA SANTÍSIMA MADRE ...
es el lunes, 15 de agosto ... no es un día de precepto, pero es una de las
fiestas más importantes de María ... las misas se celebrarán a las 9 am
y las 12 del mediodía para la fiesta de la Asunción.
ANIVERSARIO 175 DE LA PARROQUIA ... estamos empezando a
formar comités para planificar nuestras celebraciones durante el
2017 ... si usted está interesado, por favor complete el cupón de abajo
y colocar en la cesta de la colecta, dar a uno de los sacerdotes o dejar

abierto "las puertas de la misericordia" y nos ha invitado a todos a
practicar las Obras de Misericordia Corporales y Espirituales durante

FIESTA PATRONAL DE SAN. RAMÓN NONATO ... será celebrada
el domingo, 28 de agosto con una misa bilingüe a las 12 del mediodía
después de la misa ... seguido de la misa vamos a tener una recepción
en el gimnasio con alimentos de muchas naciones que representan el
carácter y la composición de la parroquia ... GUARDAR LA FECHA,
COMENZAR A PLANIFICAR EL MENÚ Y HACER PLANES
PARA ASISTIR.
JUBILEO DE LA MISERICORDIA ... todos aquellos que, en
peregrinación, entren por una PUERTA DE LA MISERICORDIA con
la intención y la disposición adecuada, y cumplan con las condiciones
normalmente unidas a una indulgencia plenaria, pueden obtener una
indulgencia de JUBILEO una vez al día, para sí mismos o para las
almas de los fieles difuntos. Las condiciones usuales y prescritas para
ganar la indulgencia plenaria de la pena temporal por los pecados ya
perdonados son:

ORACIÓN PARA LA PAZ ... podemos trabajar por la paz y podemos
orar por la paz ... es posible que usted desee utilizar esta oración en
una de nuestras misas como un recordatorio diario de lo que todos
tenemos que hacer ... que Dios nos escuche y nos ayude.
Señor Dios, tú diste a todos los pueblos el mismo origen y quisiste
reunirlos en una única familia. Derrama tu amor en todos los
corazones y enciende en cada uno el deseo de una justa promoción
para sus hermanos, para que, con los bienes que generosamente
otorgas a todos, se beneficie cada persona, y superada toda división,
se afiancen, en la entera sociedad humana, la equidad y la justicia.

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia

Decimoséptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Jornada Mundial de la Juventud Cracovia, “Bienaventurados los
misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia”
Esta semana la Iglesia universal se encamina
solidariamente en oración hacia la Jornada Mundial
de la Juventud a realizarse en Cracovia, la ciudad
donde fue arzobispo san Juan Pablo II el fundador
de este evento mundial para jóvenes. El tema de este
año de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud coincide
con el del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia:
“Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos
alcanzarán misericordia” (Mateo 5:7) El Evangelio
de hoy hace eco al mismo tema, como Jesús une la
oración con la misericordia en “la parábola del
Amigo Persistente”. Jesús nos enseña además de las palabras para orar,
aquellas acciones que deben coincidir con una autentica oración. Que
hermosa es la imagen que Jesús presenta de Dios en quien se puede
confiar hacer aquello que es lo mejor para nosotros. Un vecino
inoportuno que va a despertar a su amigo e irrumpe en su casa. Aún así
surgen bellas imágenes. La oración perseverante tiene una respuesta
activa, recibe misericordia en panes; recordando de Lucas la única
referencia a la Eucaristía “al partir el pan” (Lucas 24:35, Hechos 2:42).
La JMJ16 Cracovia, el Jubileo, y Jesús de este modo se unen para
definir la perfecta oración como una comunión perseverante con Dios
y la misericordia incondicional hacia nuestro prójimo.
SIGUE REZANDO
Santa Mónica, cuya fiesta celebramos en agosto, se conoce
generalmente como “la madre persistente”. Ella vio como su hijo
mayor, Agustín, le daba la espalda a su fe cristiana.
Mónica estaba exasperada. Durante años se dio por vencida de
hablar directamente a su hijo siguiendo el consejo de un obispo de la
región que le dijo que era mejor hablar con Dios sobre Agustín que
con Agustín sobre Dios.
La madre nunca dejó de rezar por su hijo. Finalmente, Agustín
abandonó su rebeldía, fue bautizado y luego ordenado y nombrado
obispo de Hipona. San Agustín se convirtió en uno de los eruditos más
importantes de la Iglesia.
Las lecturas de hoy destacan la importancia de la oración
persistente. Abraham, a pesar de temer molestar al Señor, continúa
preguntándole sobre el destino de Sodoma y Gomorra. Jesús, en el
Evangelio según san Lucas, le dice a sus discípulos “pidan y se les
dará, busquen y encontrarán, toquen y se les abrirá” (Lucas 11:9). Esta
es nuestra tarea: seguir rezando.
