REVISITING OUR BAPTISM
A mere seven weeks ago thousands of new Church members were
baptized. Their new life in Christ has once again infused new life into
the Church. Their new-found faith has inspired and bolstered the faith
of those who have followed Christ for many years. As the Easter
season nears its end, we revisit the scene of our baptisms. In the
second reading we hear Christ calling us: “Come. ... Let ... the one
who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water” (Revelation 22:17).
But our baptism is not one of water only. John refers to washed
robes, and we know that this washing is to be “in the blood of the
Lamb.” To make sure we get this message, we have today’s first
reading from Acts. It is the story of Stephen, the first Christian to be
killed for his faith in Jesus. We remember the promise and also the
cost of being a disciple of Christ.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY ... all those who, on pilgrimage, enter a
DOOR OF MERCY with the proper intention and disposition, and
fulfill the conditions ordinarily attached to a plenary indulgence, can

Jubilee Year of Mercy

Seventh Sunday of Easter
Between Ascension and Pentecost, the apostles “devoted themselves
with one accord to prayer, together with some women and Mary the
mother of Jesus” (Acts 1:12–14). Mary’s presence at
the center of the disciples’ circle of prayer provides “a
source of comfort and strength,” says Pope Francis, for
Mary’s “entire life was patterned after the presence of
mercy made flesh.” At the foot of the cross, Mary
witnessed Jesus’ forgiveness of his executioners, a
supreme expression of the depths to which God’s
mercy can reach. “Mary attests that the mercy of the
Son of God knows no bounds and extends to everyone,
without exception,” Francis notes. Being able to live
that unconditional forgiving mercy is the grace we pray the Holy Spirit
to bestow. During these days of prayer before Pentecost, in this month
dedicated to Our Lady, “may the sweetness of [Mary’s] countenance
watch over us,” Francis prays, “so that all of us may rediscover the joy
of God’s tenderness” (Misericordiae Vultus, 24).
PENTECOST ... next Sunday, May 15 ... we will be celebrating
Confirmation for 3 parishioners --- two at the 9 am Mass and 1 at the
12 noon ... may the Holy Spirit enlighten and strengthen them as they
complete their RCIA journey and begin their life long journey as fully
initiated members of the Church.

Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Entre la Ascensión y Pentecostés, los apóstoles “estaban unánimes,
entregados de continuo a la oración junto con las mujeres, y con María
la madre de Jesús” (Hechos 1:14). La presencia de María al centro del
cenáculo de oración, dice el Papa Francisco, provee un “medio de
consuelo y fuerza” para la vida de María “la vida entera estuvo
marcada después de la presencia de la misericordia hecha carne”. Al
pie de la cruz, María fue testigo del perdón de Jesús a quienes lo
crucificaron, una suprema expresión de lo profundo que puede
alcanzar la misericordia de Dios. El Papa Francisco sigue indicando
que “María atestigua que la misericordia del Hijo de Dios no conoce
límites y llega a todos sin excepción”. Poder vivir esa misericordia de
perdón incondicional es la gracia por la que oramos y pedimos al
Espíritu Santo. Durante estos días de oración antes de Pentecostés, en
este mes dedicado a María que “la dulzura de su mirada nos
acompañe ... para que todos podamos redescubrir la alegría de la
ternura de Dios” (Misericordiae Vultus, 24).
RECORDAMOS NUESTRO BAUTISMO
Hace sólo siete semanas que miles de nuevos miembros de la
Iglesia fueron bautizados. Su nueva vida en Cristo de nuevo
infunde renovada vida en la Iglesia. Esta fe nueva ha inspirado y
alentado la fe de los que han sido seguidores de Cristo por muchos
años. Al acercarse el fin del tiempo de Pascua, recordamos la
escena de nuestro bautismo. En la segunda lectura oímos a Cristo
que nos llama: “Ven… el que quiera, que venga a beber gratis del
agua de la vida” (Apocalipsis 22:17).
Pero nuestro bautismo no es sólo de agua. Juan hace referencia a
lavar sus ropas, y sabemos que este lavar es “en la sangre del
Cordero”. Para estar seguros de que entendemos este mensaje,
tenemos la primera lectura de hoy de los Hechos. Es la historia de
Esteban, el primer cristiano que sufre la muerte por su fe en Jesús.
Recordamos la promesa y también el costo de ser discípulo de
Cristo.
