The pagan world in which Christianity was initiated
was not a favorable ground in setting the seed of the Gospel.
Paganism led to a moral selfishness that is manifested in the
lack of appreciation to human life, to the family, to marriage,
and the freedom of individuals. In the midst of an environment
of free trade and continuous persecution Christians were
growing more contagiously than by any other campaign of
preaching. Forced to live hidden lives, their testimony of life
which attracted the increasing number of Christ's disciples who
were willing to testify their faith even in martyrdom. The blood
of the martyrs was the seed of Christians.
Today the same thing happens. The world has become
pagan and Christian morality is not only
disqualified, but persecuted. The family is
being continuously attacked to the degree
that love and fidelity are already something
rare in our society. Homosexuality has been
imposed as something natural and has been
glorified through the media. The doctrine of
the Church has been disqualified and
persecuted, even legally. It seems that
Christianity has been reduced to an
increasingly smaller number of individuals
and families living in counterpoint, fighting
against the rising tide of neo-paganism.
El mundo pagano en el que se inició el cristianismo no
era terreno favorable para que prendiera la semilla del
Evangelio. El paganismo propició una moral egoísta que se
manifestaba en la falta de aprecio a la vida humana, a la
familia, al matrimonio y a la libertad de los individuos. En
medio de un ambiente de franca y continua persecución los
cristianos fueron creciendo más por contagio que por cualquier
campaña de predicación. Obligados a vivir ocultos fue su
testimonio de vida lo que atrajo a cada vez mayor número de
discípulos de Cristo que estaban dispuestos a dar testimonio de
su fe hasta en el martirio. La sangre de los mártires fue semilla
de cristianos.
Hoy sucede lo mismo. El mundo se
nos ha vuelto pagano y la moral cristiana es
no sólo descalificada, sino perseguida. La
familia está siendo continuamente atacada
al grado que el amor y la fidelidad son ya
algo raro en nuestra sociedad. La
homosexualidad ha sido impuesta como
algo natural y se ha glorificado a través de
los medios de comunicación. La doctrina de
la Iglesia ha sido descalificada y
perseguida, incluso legalmente. Parece que
el cristianismo se ha reducido a un número
cada vez menor de individuos y familias
que viven a contracorriente, luchando
contra la marea creciente del neo
paganismo.
But the Gospel is fire, even
though it is a little flame carefully
preserved in the bosom of a family or of
an ecclesial community.
We have the fire and what more
do we wish to have, other than that fire
burn, in the same way Jesus did. That it
be communicated by contact and that it light other hearts.
That it warms and illuminates the world in which we live
in.
At the vigil of each year the Church offers us a
liturgical action which is very emotional and sobering.
We consecrate a beautiful candle that represents that
Christ has risen and then each one of us, light our humble
candle in the fire of the candle to indicate that we burn
with the same fire of the risen Christ and are illuminate
with the same light. Sometimes our candle is shut down
and, without much reflection, were turn the light back on
with the light of our neighbor. Walking together, and
being together, facilitates the conservation of the fire of
the risen Christ.
If today we want to be a Christian in the midst of
this atmosphere contrary to our faith, we need the faith of
others to preserve our own. We need the Church and need
to be the Church.
If we walked alone in the midst of the darkness of
our world, we run danger of our faith being shut off and
we having to recover it.
Pero el Evangelio es fuego,
aunque sea una llamita cuidadosamente
conservada en el seno de una familia o
de una comunidad eclesial.
Nosotros tenemos el fuego y qué hemos de desear,
como Jesús, sino que arda. Que se comunique por contacto y
que encienda otros corazones; que caliente e ilumine el mundo
en que vivimos.
En la Vigilia Pascual de cada año la Iglesia nos
propone una acción litúrgica muy emotiva y aleccionadora.
Consagramos un hermoso cirio que representa a Cristo
resucitado y después, cada uno de nosotros, encendemos
nuestra humilde velita en el fuego de ese cirio para indicar que
ardemos con el mismo fuego de Cristo resucitado e
iluminamos con su misma luz.
A veces se nos apaga nuestra velita y, entonces,
sin mucha reflexión, le volvemos a encender con el fuego
de la velita de nuestro vecino. El caminar juntos, el estar
juntos, nos facilita conservar el fuego de Cristo
resucitado.
Si hoy queremos ser cristianos en medio de este
ambiente contrario a nuestra fe, necesitamos de la fe de
los demás para conservar la nuestra. Necesitamos de la
Iglesia y necesitamos ser Iglesia.
Si caminamos solos en medio de la obscuridad de
nuestro mundo, corremos el peligro de que se nos apague
la fe y no tengamos cómo recuperarla.
TO THE PARISHIONERS OF SAINT
JOSEPH AND MISSIONS
When Bishop Blaire visit our Parish, he
had a meeting with the Parish and Finance
Councils and the various Ministers to participate
in a brief consultation on the life of the parish to
identify: what needs to continue happening; what
needs to stop; and what needs to be created for
the life and well-being of the parish and the missions
in Bridgeport and Lee Vining.
The Bishop Blaire sent us a summary of the
predominant points which were made in the consultation and
asked us to have another meeting with both Councils under
the guidance of Maureena Rojas to review these points and
select one item from each category to work on.
The results are:
1.- What are the areas we need to keep doing?
Adult classes on the Catholic faith /Bible study.

Cuando el Obispo Blaire visitó nuestra
Parroquia, tuvo una reunión con los Consejos
Parroquial y de Finanzas, además de varios
encargados de los diversos Ministerios para
participar en una consulta sobre la vida de la
Parroquia para identificar: lo que debe de
continuar; lo que debe de dejar de existir; y lo que se
necesita crear para el bienestar de la Parroquia y las
Misiones de Bridgeport y Lee Vining.
El Obispo Blaire nos envió un resumen de los puntos
predominantes como resultado de la consulta y nos pidió que
tuviéramos otra reunión con ambos consejos bajo la guía de
Maureena Rojas para revisar estos puntos y elegir uno de
cada categoría para trabajar en ellos.
Los resultados son los siguientes:
1.- ¿Qué áreas necesitamos continuar?
Clases para adultos sobre la Fe Católica y
Estudio Bíblico.
2.- What do we need to let go of/stop doing?
Gossiping and spreading rumors in the parish and
speaking ill of one another.
2.- ¿Qué debe dejar de existir?
Los chismes y rumores en la Parroquia y el
hablar mal de los demás.
3.- What do we need to start doing?
A parish hall.
3.- ¿Qué debemos comenzar a hacer?
El Salón Parroquial.
Those are the areas that we are going to be working
to improve the better life of our Parochial Community.
MASS IN LEE VINING EVERY WEDNESDAY.This is a good opportunity for those who are not able
to come to Sunday Mass because their work. Come every
Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Our Savior of the Mountains.
