Monday – January 27
The true joy
It is not always easy to be happy. We live in very difficult
times in the world, the country, in our communities, and surely,
even within our own family. Finding the light of God’s glory
that dawns in us, which the first reading speaks about, can be
rather complicated. From the shadows where we sometimes
seem to live, we must learn to distinguish the glory of God’s
presence, as well as his belongings and gifts. Above all, the
glory of having been called to be his disciples. The document
from Aparecida insists on this a lot: When we have found the
call of God and his invitation to follow him and become his
missionaries , there is only room for an enormous joy.
Perhaps pure joy is not necessarily manifested in laughter,
entertainment or noise. True joy is the profound security that
you have been reached by God and are in Him. And that meets
all expectations of true homeland, life, and hope. It may be that
such happiness occurs in the midst of profound suffering: they
are not conflictive, although it may appear otherwise, because
even in suffering, there is the certainty that the presence of God
who accompanies and supports, gives light and strength. And
that is the source of life and true joy, therefore, joy is a deep
sense of serenity toward life. Joy gives us new eyes to see what
is good and recognize the presence of God in everything;
capable of being grateful before all that has been received and
the grace of strength and patience, even in the midst of pain.
As Christians, this is our mission: to transmit the joy and
glory, not that you have reached God, but that he reached out to
you; of being saved, redeemed, lifted, and filled with life by the
work of Christ. Some saints say it is impossible to be sad
Christians. We have received the joy of salvation and our
responsibility is to pass it on to others. How is this done? Fist of
all, by cultivating a grateful heart in ourselves. We have
received much and received plenty each day in the form of
kindness from the people around us, in our own talents and
capabilities, in the strength we find to continue fighting n life, in
new families and friends. A thankful heart knows no
resentment, and therefore, can be happy and such joy is
noticeable in others.

For reflection
Am I convinced that I have been reached by God? Is the joy
of being with God reflected in my daily actions? Could
others tell that I am Christian by my joyful way of living
my identity as a child of God? How can I cultivate a
grateful heart in me? What gifts, talents, grace, and
blessings have I received these days? How do I thank God
and others?

Dear Parishioners,
TODAY … we welcome 12 new members to the parish … they are
students in our elementary school as well as several young children …
congratulations to their families and godparents at this time of
Baptism.
OUR LADY OF HOPE NICHES … the niches for cremains (ashes)
have been completed in our cemetery and you may call the cemetery to
make an appointment to view the new mausoleum … please call 718792-1133 and ask for Marlene.
LATE FOR CHURCH … how about a New Year’s resolution --- on
time for church, in church 5 minutes early, ready to begin the Mass
when the priest walks down the aisle? Late to church is very
distracting to the priests and to the people. ON TIME, EARLY AND
READY TO PRAY!
PARKING … a reminder to be courteous in the parking lot and do not
block others … we have the parking lot on Purdy Street open on
Sundays so you should be able to find a spot there as well and walk
through the alley way to the church … please do not block the parking
lot with your car --- we may need to get through with an ambulance or
fire truck and you are in the way!
TRIP TO IRELAND … August 4 through 14 … with Monsignor
Graham … cost is $3000 and includes hotels, most meals, coach,
guides, airfare, taxes and sightseeing … come to the rectory for a
brochure with complete information about the 7 cities we will be
visiting.
CHRISTMAS COLLECTION AND FLOWER COLLECTION … we
will close these two collections today … thank you for your generosity
and final figures will be printed in next week’s bulletin.
VOLUNTEERS PARTY … once again we will be hosting our annual
party for our parish volunteers on Saturday, February 1 … we thank
the company of the late Stuart Miller for continuing this wonderful gift
to the parish … this year at the Mass at 5:30 pm we hope to have our
Academy Chorus lead us in song and then at the party … please
complete the coupon below and bring to the rectory or drop in the
collection basket, please check your calendars to be sure that you can
attend … too often we have too many NO SHOWS and we have
already ordered the food! Mass at 5:30 pm followed by dinner and
dancing at 6:30pm. You may invite a guest but 18 is the age limit --- no
children may attend.

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Catholics should be married in
the Catholic Church … please speak with one of the priests regarding
your situation before planning a reception … sometimes your personal
situation can be complicated and so it is important to speak with one of
the priests … the Sacrament of Matrimony strengthens your
commitment and brings Jesus into your marital relationship — what a
great gift and grace is Jesus!
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … there is nothing to be frightened
about if you prepare for a funeral — the Mass, the wake, the funeral
home, the cemetery … it is good to plan and it will make the time of
death much easier for your family … visit one of the neighborhood
funeral homes, make an appointment to see grave plots at our
Cemetery, speak to one of the priests regarding the Mass … be
prepared.
PARISH REGISTRATION … if you are reading this, you should be
registered as a member of the parish and you should be receiving our
envelopes and our letters and other announcements … your
registration helps us to identify for purposes of financial tax issues and
letters of recommendation to be godparents — but you must register in
the rectory … the process takes about 5 minutes … register for the
New Year!
SPONSOR RECOMMENDATIONS … over the past few weeks, we
have had many people come to the rectory to ask for sponsor
recommendations for Baptism and/or Confirmation … however, they
are not registered so we cannot give them a recommendation as a
practicing member of the parish … if you are 18 years or older, you
should be registered and use the church envelopes to verify your
attendance at Mass … it is very simple and you cannot use a relative to
get you a recommendation --- you must be registered and coming to
church not someone else. COME TO REGISTER AND COME TO
MASS ON SUNDAYS!
SICK OR HOMEBOUND let us know in the rectory … we will add
you to the prayer of the faithful and ask if you would like to receive
Holy Communion at home … so often we never are aware that you are
missing!

birthdays, anniversaries, congratulations, etc.) … for more

WORLD MARRIAGE DAY … February 9 … the Archdiocese who
like to honor the longest married couple … you must be sacramentally
married for at least 65 years and reside in the Archdiocese … if you

CARDINAL'S CAMPAIGN ... very shortly you will be receiving a
letter about the beginning of the Cardinal's Campaign for 2014 ... we
went over our goal last year and so our goal was raised this year to
$47,000 ... I think we can do it but what I am most interested in is
increasing our participation with more donors giving something to the
Cardinal's Campaign ... last year 240 parishioners made gift and this
year I would like to increase that number to 270 ... we can do it! More
to come.
BAPTISMS … Catholics should have their children baptized and
brought into the Church … a parent needs to come to the rectory to
speak with a priest and should bring the birth certificate … you need to
be registered in the parish and you should have at least one godparent
PARISH COUNCIL MEETING … tomorrow, Monday, January 27 at
7:30 pm in the Flynn Room in the elementary school … the agenda
will include our outreach to the needy during Christmas and MAKING
ALL THINGS NEW report about the parishes in our area regarding
closing, merges, consolidations, etc.

REGISTRO PARROQUIAL … si usted está leyendo esto, usted debe
estar registrado como miembro de la parroquia y debería recibir
nuestros sobres y nuestras cartas y otros anuncios … su registro nos
ayuda a identificarlo para problemas con impuestos, cartas de

CAMPAÑA DEL CARDENAL … en poco va a recibir una carta
sobre la Campaña del Cardenal para el 2014 ... sobre pasamos nuestra
meta del último año por lo que nuestro objetivo se planteó este
año para $ 47,000 ... creo que podemos hacerlo pero lo que más me
interesa es aumentar nuestra participación con más donantes dando
algo a la Campaña del Cardenal ... el año pasado 240 feligreses
hicieron regalos y este año me gustaría aumentar ese número a 270 ...

REUNIÓN DEL CONSEJO PARROQUIAL ... mañana, lunes 27 de
enero a las 7:30pm en el Salón Flynn en la escuela primaria...la agenda
incluirá nuestro alcance a los necesitados durante la Navidad y el

La verdadera alegría
No siempre es fácil estar alegres. Vivimos momentos muy
difíciles en el mundo, en le país y en nuestras comunidades;
muchos, incluso, en nuestras propias familias, seguramente.
Encontrar dentro esa luz de la gloria de Dios que amanece
en nosotros de la que habla la primera lectura podría
resultar complicado. De entre las sombras en las que a veces
parece a que vivimos, tenemos que aprender a distinguir la
gloria de toda la presencia de Dios, sus bendiciones y sus
dones. Sobre todo, la gloria de haber sido llamados como sus
discípulos. El documento de Aparecida insiste mucho en
esto: cuando nos hemos encontrado con la llamada de Dios y
su invitación a seguirle y a ser sus misioneros, no cabe sino
una enorme alegría. ¡Qué enorme dignidad, qué fantástica
llamada a estar siempre con quien es nuestra vida!
La verdadera alegría quizá no se manifiesta
necesariamente en risas, ni en diversión o ruidos. La
verdadera alegría es la seguridad profunda de haber sido
alcanzado por Dios y de estar en Él. Y eso cumple todas las
expectativas de patria verdadera, de vida y de esperanza.
Puede ser que tal alegría tenga lugar en medio de un
profundo sufrimiento; no están reñidos, aunque parezca lo
contrario, porque, incluso en el sufrimiento, se tiene la
certeza de la presencia de Dios que acompaña, apoya, da luz
y fuerza. Y eso es la fuente de la vida y de la alegría
verdadera. La alegría, por tanto, es un profundo sentimiento
de serenidad frente a la vida. La alegría de unos ojos nuevos
que ven el bien y reconocen la presencia de Dios en todo.
Que son capaces del agradecimiento ante todo lo que se ha
recibido y la gracia de la fortaleza y la paciencia incluso en
medio del dolor.
Como cristianos, esto es nuestra misión: transmitir esa
alegría y esa gloria no de haber alcanzado a Dios, sino de
haber sido alcanzados por Él. De haber sido salvados,
redimidos, elevados y llenos de vida por la obra de Cristo.
No es posible, dicen algunos santos, ser cristianos tristes.
Hemos recibidos la alegría de la salvación y nuestra
responsabilidad es entregársela a otros. ¿Cómo se hace esto?
En primer lugar, cultivando en nosotros mismos un corazón
agradecido. Hemos recibido mucho y recibimos mucho cada
día, en la bondad de las personas de nuestro alrededor, en
nuestros propios talentos y capacidades, en la fuerza que
encontramos para seguir luchando en la vida, en nuestras
familias y amigos. Un corazón agradecido no conoce el
resentimiento y, por tanto, puede estar alegre; y esa alegría
se nota en los demás.
Para la reflexión
¿Estoy convencido de que he sido alcanzado por Dios? En mis
acciones diarias, ¿se refleja la alegría de estar con Dios?
¿Podrían otros saber que soy cristiano por mi manera alegre de
vivir mi identidad como hijo de Dios? ¿De qué maneras puedo
cultivar en mi mismo un corazón agradecido? ¿Qué dones,
talentos, gracias y bendiciones he recibido en estos días? ¿Cómo
las agradezco a Dios y a los demás?
