Dear Beloved of God,
It is with great joy and humble thankfulness that I become your new priest here at Notre Dame. I
know there will be lots of adjustments, lots of learning and lots of new faces and people for me to
meet. I hope to get to know as many of you as I possibly can in the coming weeks and months.
As many of you know, I am a convert to the Roman Catholic Church from the Protestant Episcopal
Church, I am married and have two children. Please know that this is as new and unique and a
little confusing to us as it is to you. To the best of my knowledge, this has never happened before
anywhere in the Church, and certainly not here at Notre Dame.
We are all therefore on a learning curve. But I am convinced that Notre Dame is blessed, protected
and guided by God’s Holy Spirit, and that if we are good listeners and followers, the Lord will
continue to bless and provide for this great parish.
TODAY’S READINGS

As you may also know, last summer I was a visiting priest here many times, and even after that I
have come to visit Notre Dame to say Mass, hear confessions and attend Deanery meetings. Psalm — Let all the earth
Never before have I been so warmly greeted and welcomed. All of the people here at Notre Dame cry out to God with joy
have been so kind and warm to me and my family. I am truly humbled and thankful to all of you.
(Psalm 66).
My hope for Notre Dame is that we will continue to grow in our love for the Lord and in our faith in
Him. Through all of our parish ministries, I hope that we can meet the spiritual needs of all our
parishioners as best we can, and to serve our Lord faithfully through the coming weeks, months
and years.
Second Reading — May I
never boast except in the
cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ (Galatians 6:14-18).
I am immensely grateful to Fr. Mike for preparing the way for me. He has taken time out of his
busy schedule to mentor me, to teach me a few things, and to offer his help to me in the future. I
appreciate all that he has done for me.

The staff here at Notre Dame have been tremendously helpful and kind to me, and for that I am
also very grateful. They are all very patient, helpful and reassuring to me as I begin my ministry
here at Notre Dame.

Con gran alegría y humilde agradecimiento me he convertido en el nuevo Sacerdote de Notre
Dame. Sé que habrá muchos ajustes, mucho que aprender y muchos rostros nuevos y gente
que conocer. Espero llegar a conocer a tantos de ustedes como me sea posible en las próximas
semanas y meses.
Como muchos de ustedes saben, soy un converso a la Iglesia Católica de la Iglesia Protestante
Episcopal. Estoy casado y tengo dos hijos. Por favor, sepan que esto es tan nuevo, único y un
poco confuso para nosotros como lo es para ustedes. Tengo entendido, que esto nunca ha
sucedido antes en la Iglesia, y, ciertamente, ni aquí en Notre Dame.
Por lo tanto, todos estamos en proceso de aprendizaje. Pero estoy convencido de que la
Parroquia de Notre Dame ha sido bendecida, protegida y guiada por el Espíritu Santo de Dios, y
que si somos buenos receptores y seguidores, el Señor seguirá bendiciendo y proveyendo para
esta gran Parroquia.
Como también lo saben, el verano pasado vine aquí como Sacerdote visitante muchas veces, e
incluso después de haber venido a visitar Notre Dame para celebrar la Santa Misa, confesar y
asistir a reuniones de los Decanatos. Nunca antes había estado tan cálidamente recibido y
bienvenido. Todas las personas aquí en Notre Dame han sido tan amables y cálidas conmigo y
mi familia. Me siento muy honrado y agradecido con todos ustedes.
Mi esperanza para Notre Dame, es que seguiremos creciendo en nuestro amor por el Señor y
en nuestra fe en Él. A través de todos nuestros ministerios parroquiales, espero que podamos
satisfacer las necesidades espirituales de todos nuestros feligreses lo mejor que podamos, para
servir a nuestro Señor fielmente a través de las semanas que vienen, meses y años.
Estoy inmensamente agradecido al Padre Mike por prepararme el camino. Ha tomado tiempo de
su apretada agenda para ser mi mentor, para enseñarme algunas cosas, y me ha ofrecido su
ayuda para lo que necesite en el futuro. Agradezco todo lo que ha hecho por mí.
El personal aquí en Notre Dame han sido tremendamente útil y amable, y por eso también estoy
muy agradecido. Todos ellos son muy pacientes y serviciales conmigo al comenzar mi ministerio
aquí en Notre Dame.
No puedo agradecer lo suficiente a los feligreses de Notre Dame. Muchos de ustedes nos han
dado a mí y a mi familia alimentos, una canasta para los recién llegados, y se han ofrecido para

de la forma en que práccas tu fe? ¿Cómo
respondes a ellos?

Our Sunday best used to represent the finest duds we
owned. Time was, church was formal, and folks
dressed that way. Of course dinner was formal too.
So was theater. So was photography. Now it’s
different. People come to church wearing everything
from tuxedos to cutoffs, from formal gowns to sandals.
Society clings to few rules about dress. Restaurants
make you wear shoes and shirts. People laugh at your
bathrobe, curlers and bunny slippers.
A backless dress may be elegant at a Saturday
wedding, but gauche on a Sunday morning. Under the
roof of God’s house, some dos and don’ts prevail, but
there is no telling how the brothers and sisters will
dress for the family faith meal. The advance of casual
wear has succeeded in many parts of society, not just
churches. What constitutes appropriate attire for
business and leisure activities continues to fluctuate.
Even when invitations specify formal wear, business
clothes or casual dress, respondents may remain
confused.
Expectations for Sunday dress vary from one
worshiper to the next. A young participant’s outfit
reveals some flesh. Some see no problem; others find
it scandalous. Some cannot afford nice clothes; others
are coming from work or stop on their way to play.
At its best, the variety of church dress displays the
universality of the call to worship. At its worst it shows
carelessness and confusion. The harrumph-o-meter
generally short circuits when a worshiper, who arrived
expecting a place in the pew, serves as a communion
minister, reader or song leader for a short-handed
celebration. Having communion offered to you from
someone dressed in shorts and a grunge rock t-shirt
may shake the most fervent worshiper’s belief in the
Body of Christ.
However, ministers generally prefer to dress right.
When duty calls them unprepared, they do their best
with hearts of faith, seeking to serve, not to offend.
When we prepare for church, charity demands
consideration in our dress and moderation in our
judgment.

Vestir con respeto para asistir al templo

Aprovechamos el domingo para lucir nuestras mejores
prendas de vestir. Hubo un tiempo, que la iglesia era
formal, y la gente vestía de esa manera. Por supuesto, la
cena era formal también. Así lo era el teatro. Y así
también lo era en las fotografías. Ahora es diferente. La
gente viene a la iglesia vistiendo de todo, desde trajes de
etiqueta hasta pantalones cortos, desde vestidos
formales hasta sandalias. La sociedad se aferra a
algunas normas sobre la vestimenta. Los restaurantes
hacen que lleven zapatos y camisas. La gente se ríe de
tu bata de baño, tus rulos y hasta de tus pantuflas de
conejo.
Un vestido descotado pudiera ser elegante para una
boda en sábado, pero no un gauche en un domingo por
la mañana. Bajo el techo de la casa de Dios, hay algunas
normas que prevalecen, pero no se sabe cómo los
hermanos y hermanas se debieran vestir para la comida
de fe de la familia. La promoción de ropa sport ha tenido
éxito en muchos sectores de la sociedad, no sólo a las
iglesias. Lo que constituye la vestimenta adecuada para
las actividades de negocios y de ocio continúa
fluctuando. Incluso cuando se especifican en las

para una celebración, rodea para buscar lugar en una

VINNIE’S ON BROADWAY NOTES
FROM THE HEART
The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway
would like to share with you our work that your
donations and thrift shop support make possible while
keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and
sisters in need.
Just as our forefathers on the frontier helped their
neighbors, we see those we serve offering to help each
other, often total strangers. Rides are the biggest
aid. Kerrville is very spread out and roads and drivers
are not pedestrian friendly. Neighbors will pick up
neighbors for the food pantry and families also
carpool. We have those we serve have faith enough to
let a stranger in their car to help a stranded motorist in
our parking lot. Also, those we assist have taken
travelers to the bus station. Even a shopper in our store
did that recently. Our brothers and sisters in need
usually arrive in barely running vehicles. Sometimes a
group tool and fix session goes on to get the vehicle
home. In the food pantry, we see sharing. A man
needed dog food, which we don't have. Someone else
getting food offered two bags of food her dog couldn't
eat and also to deliver it. Often we hear, I don't want
this, give it to him. We sometimes put out carts filled
with it-has-to-go-now bread and donuts. The first
person does not take it all, but it will last almost the
entire session.
Our biggest source of advertising is word of mouth. It
works for us and no fees are involved. A couple years
ago an amputee with an ARMY cap in a wheelchair
came in with a friend. We hastened to help the Vet,
who quickly told us, "I don't need any help. I brought my
buddy in, he does".
On a community bases, volunteers from St. Vincent de
Paul attend certain community group meetings to share
resource ideas and to become knowledgeable of help
available in the area.
These include Interagency
Partnership of Kerr County which is opened to all
charities,
Ministerial Alliance of Kerr County that
members not just the ordained, but also the ministering,
Community Garden, Transportation Council, and Hill
Country Homeless Coalition. No one agency has the
volunteers and funds to assist the entire area
alone. Together, we can accomplish much more.

she found on our shelves:
Saint-Watching,
by
Phyllis
McGinley, is
a
charming
and
fascinating book about many of the
more popular Catholic saints, and a
few of the lesser-known ones.
I found myself carrying it with me in
my purse so that I could read it
anywhere I had to wait in line, and
taking numerous breaks from tasks
to read just a few more pages before
reluctantly putting it down and
returning to work. Of course, in five
minutes I'd find some excuse to take
a
break
and
read
a
bit
more. Perhaps shirking work isn't
the best method of finding time to
read about saints, but McGinley
managed to make the tales of the
saints that I've grown up with as
riveting as if I had never heard of
them before.
The light, conversational tone of the
book, as well as the many humorous
anecdotes about less-famous facets
of the saints' personalities, make for
a refreshingly funny and wonderfully
relatable look at the lives and
characters of that "peculiar race," the
saints.
BEFORE GOING INTO THE VOTING BOOTH
With politics swirling around us every minute of
every day, we might be unsure as to where we
might turn to understand what the Catholic
Church teaches about voting in an election, and
what the guidelines for voting as a Catholic
really are. There are two publications in the
Narthex that may be of help to you: 1) a twopage flyer (found on the credenza) called “The
Challenge of Forming Consciences for Faithful
Citizenship” published by the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops, and 2) “A
Guide to Catholic Voting” (found on the
bookrack) published by Our Sunday Visitor
