Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ
On October 15 the Church celebrates the feast of St. Teresa of Avila, the great Carmelite mystic and Doctor of the Church. She is a
true treasure of the Church, who shows us the essence of what it means to be holy.
Teresa grew up in a fairly comfortable Spanish family. Her father was very holy and her mother, who died when Teresa was 14, also
formed her in the Catholic faith. Her decision to enter religious life came after she read her father's copy of the "Letters of St. Jerome." In his letters, Jerome gives the traditional teaching that the contemplative life of religion is the safest path to salvation. Seeking
this secure path, Teresa entered Carmel, leaving home without her father's permission, at the age of 20.
Teresa was a young woman of extremely high voltage. She was intelligent and talented and charming and relatively worldly as a
young Carmelite nun. She would visit regularly with family and stay current on worldly affairs. However, God had other plans for this
impressive bride of His. Even in the midst of her sinfulness and imperfections, God began to favor her with special locutions and visions. She received spiritual assistance from St. Francis Borgia and St. Peter of Alcantara, who helped her to discern that these experiences were from God.
In one of her visions, God showed Teresa the place prepared for her in Hell if she were to be unfaithful to Him. This was a turning
point in her life. At the age of 47, Teresa began her life's work of reforming the Carmelite Order. She would found many new monasteries throughout Spain, all of them dedicated to living the ancient Carmelite Rule in its fullness. In this reform, she would also be the
spiritual mother of St. John of the Cross, who would enact similar reforms among the Carmelite friars.
From age 46 until her death at 77, Teresa wrote several ingenious works on prayer and the spiritual life. Her fundamental insight is
that true perfection means perfect union with God, whereby the soul has nothing in it that is not explicitly and entirely of God. This
doctrine of transforming union with God has solid roots in the theology of the great St. Thomas Aquinas, evidence of the influence on
her of her Dominican confessors. For her outstanding doctrine on prayer, St. Teresa was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope
Paul VI in 1970.
Teresa fundamentally and finally understood herself as the humble bride of the King of Kings. She sought only to please Him. This is
her true genius. As we celebrate her feast, we ask her intercession for this same grace, that we may be entirely wounded and healed
by Divine Love.

La obediencia y gratitud y la fe también van juntas en nuestra
lectura profética de este Domingo sobre la curación de
Naamán el Sirio en el Río Jordán. Naamán sabe que en por
sentido común que las aguas del Jordán no son más poderosas
para limpiarlo a él que la piscina de su casa. Sin embargo,
confiando en la palabra del profeta Eliseo, el obedece la orden
de lavarse en el Jordán y, a causa de su obediencia, experimenta curación. Su fe en el Poder de Dios que obra por medio
del profeta le llevó a obedecer la palabra del profeta. Pero no
se detiene allí. El luego, regresa al profeta, lleno de humildad
y gratitud, ofreciendo regalos a Eliseo.
Nuestro Evangelio nos enseña que la solamente la obediencia
no garantiza la salvación de nuestra fe; el agradecimiento
también es necesario para vivir una vida fructífera en la fe.
Los diez leprosos obedecen el mandato de Jesús de ir a mostrarse ante los sacerdotes. Todos ellos fueron sanados de su
lepra. Sólo la fe del Samaritano leproso es alabada porque
sólo él volvió a ofrecer gratitud. Esto nos enseña que la obediencia no es suficiente; hay que volver a Aquel a Quien somos obedientes con gozosa gratitud.
San Agustín interpreta los diez leprosos como una alegoría de
nuestra vida espiritual en la Iglesia. Los leprosos están enfermos con su enfermedad, pegados a una falsa doctrina y la
herejía. Llamar a Jesús "Maestro", los leprosos vienen con
una fe verdadera y aceptan Sus enseñanzas mediante recibiendo la d autoridad de la Iglesia. Reciben su curación, y luego,
dirigiéndose a los sacerdotes de la Iglesia para recibir los sacramentos, especialmente en el poder curativo de la confesión. Nótese, sin embargo, que esto no es suficiente todavía
para ser salvo. Para la salvación, la gratitud es necesaria para
seguir con una conversión.

WEDDINGS/ BODAS
Couples planning to be married must contact
a priest well in advance of the wedding date.
They must also receive personal preparation
for entering marriage. If either party has
previously gone through any form of civil or
religious marriage with another person, the
priest is not permitted to set a date for the
wedding until the Archbishop’s office has
been consulted. It should be noted that
Catholics, in order to marry validly, must marry before the parish
priest or his delegate and two witnesses. A civil marriage or a marriage before non-Catholic minister is not a valid marriage. Couples
in such “marriages” should contact a priest to have the situation
rectified.
Parejas que estén planeando casarse necesitan ponerse en contacto
con un sacerdote antes de planear el día de la boda. Ellos también
necesitan recibir preparación personal durante su matrimonio. Si
cualquier persona de la pareja a estado casado anteriormente con
otra persona el Sacerdote no puede poner la fecha hasta que la oficina de la Arquidiócesis lo apruebe. Tienen que tener en cuenta que

WORLD MISSION MONTH
As part of World Mission Month,
World Mission Sunday is celebrated annually on the next-to-last
Sunday wherever Christians are
committed to bringing about God’s
reign here on earth, a world where
every single person’s dignity is
recognized and protected. This
year World Mission Sunday is celebrated on October 23, 2016. On
World Mission Sunday, Catholics
of the world unite at Mass to recommit themselves to their
vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries. The Church’s
missionary activity begins with the proclamation of faith:
“Jesus is Lord!” He is our common hope – a hope that saves.
On World Mission Sunday, we are called in a special way to
be “missionaries of mercy” through prayer and participation
in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection.
World Mission Sunday was established by Pope Pius XI in
1926. He saw the day as a way to “foster understanding of
the greatness of the missionary task, encourage zeal among
the clergy and the people, and offer an opportunity to make
the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (a Pontifical Mission Society like the Missionary Childhood Association) ever
more widely known and encourage offerings for the missions.” Jesus’ mission of creating a world where all can live a
fully dignified life is still far from completion. Therefore, the
entire month of October has been dedicated to reflecting on
the central mission of the Church to help all Christians in
their commitment to Christ’s mission of salvation for the

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
El 15 de octubre la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de Santa Teresa de Jesús, la
gran mística Carmelita y Doctora de la Iglesia. Ella es un verdadero
tesoro de la Iglesia, que nos muestra la esencia de lo que significa ser
santo.
Teresa se crio en una familia Española bastante cómoda. Su padre que
era muy santo y su madre, que murió cuando Teresa tenía 14 años, también la ayudaron a formarse en la fe católica. Su decisión de entrar en la
vida religiosa se produjo después de que leyó la copia de su padre de las
"Cartas de San Jerónimo." En sus cartas, Jerónimo da la enseñanza tradicional que la vida contemplativa de la religión es el camino más seguro hacia la salvación. Buscando esta ruta segura, Teresa entra en el Carmelo, saliendo de su casa sin el permiso de su padre, a la edad de 20.
Teresa era una mujer joven y de muy alta tensión. Era inteligente y con
talento y encantadora y relativamente mundana como una monja joven
carmelita. Ella visitaba regularmente a su familia y estaba al corriente
de los asuntos mundanos. Sin embargo, Dios tenía otros planes para
esta impresionante novia de El. Incluso en medio de sus pecados y las
imperfecciones, Dios comenzó a favorecerla a ella con locuciones y
visiones especiales. Recibió asistencia espiritual de San Francisco de
Borja y San Pedro de Alcántara, que le ayudó a discernir estas experiencias que eran de Dios.
En una de sus visiones, Dios mostró a Teresa el lugar preparado para
ella en el infierno si estuviera siendo infiel a El. Este fue un punto de
cambio en su vida. A la edad de 47 años, Teresa comenzó su trabajo de
por vida para reformar la Orden del Carmelitas. Ella encontraría muchos nuevos monasterios en toda España, todos ellos dedicados a la

Este es su verdadero genio. Al celebrar su fiesta, le pedimos su intercesión por esta misma gracia, para que podamos ser enteramente heridos
y curados por el Amor Divino.
