Dear Parishioners:
On August 29 the Church celebrates the Beheading of John the Baptist. This is a most poignant feast for our time, in which God’s law
concerning marriage is so often broken and ignored. St. John the Baptist was martyred for defending God’s law concerning marriage
and this makes him a great example and help to all in our time who undertake the same joyful task. The story of John’s beheading begins with the sinful and invalid marriage of Herod the Tetrarch with Herodias, the lawful wife of Herod’s brother, Philip. Herod had
divorced his own wife, whose name was Phasaelis. Herod, therefore, had committed adultery in entering into “marriage” with Herodias;
neither he nor Herodias were free to marry. How many Catholics and non-Catholics in our time have committed this same sin and live
in this same situation! John the Baptist is the biblical model for how the Church responds pastorally – with true love – to persons who
contradict Jesus’s teaching that “whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery.” Herod was quite fond of John and
loved to hear him preach, more out of curiosity and admiration than out of a desire for the truth. John did not let this friendship with
Herod compromise his love for God and so he told Herod and Herodias the plain truth of their situation: they were living in adultery
and they had to separate if they wanted to stop offending God and avoid eternal damnation. Herod was perplexed by John’s teaching
because he was a weak man. We might imagine he was the kind of person who knows what the right thing is but lacks the moral courage to carry it out. Herodias, on the other hand, was full of malice and hated John. She wanted him dead because of his call to repentance. She saw him as the enemy of all her desires, especially for the power that comes with being the legal wife of the tetrarch. In her
hatred for John, she prevailed upon Herod to imprison him. Herod reluctantly kept John in captivity and we are told in the Gospel that
he even continued to listen to John and confer with him. Herod’s moral weakness reached its nadir when, filled with lust after the performance of a dance by his niece, Salome, he promised her whatever she desired, even up to half of his kingdom. Salome conferred
with her mother, Herodias, who convinced her to ask for the death of John the Baptist. And so it was that she returned to Herod to declare that her only request was the head of John the Baptist on a platter. In this way, John the Baptist was beheaded out of hatred for the
law of God concerning the indissolubility of marriage. He is our model and our hero in the struggle against this sin in our time. The
Church also is hated for her preaching of God’s law concerning the indissolubility of marriage and the impossibility of “divorce and
remarriage.” She turns to John, the Friend of the Bridegroom, on August 29 to learn from him how to endure joyfully to the end in fidelity to her Bridegroom, Jesus Christ.

El 29 de agosto la Iglesia celebra la decapitación de Juan el Bautista.
Esta es una fiesta muy conmovedora de nuestro tiempo, en el que la
ley sobre el matrimonio de Dios tan a menudo se rompe y se ignoran. San Juan Bautista fue martirizado por defender la ley sobre el
matrimonio de Dios y esto lo hace un gran ejemplo y ayudar a todos
de nuestro tiempo que realizan la misma tarea. La historia de la
decapitación de Juan comienza con el matrimonio de pecado y no
válidos de Herodes el Tetrarca con Herodías, la esposa legítima del
hermano de Herodes, Felipe. Herodes se había divorciado de su
mujer, cuyo nombre era Fasaelis. Herodes, por lo tanto, habia cometido adulterio en entrar en el "matrimonio" con Herodías; ni él ni
Herodías eran libres para casarse. Como muchos católicos y no católicos en nuestro tiempo han cometido este mismo pecado y vivir en
esta misma situación! Juan el Bautista es el modelo bíblico de cómo
la Iglesia responde pastoralmente - con el verdadero amor—las personas que contradicen las enseñanzas de Jesús que ". Cualquiera
que repudia a su mujer y se casa con otra, comete adulterio".
Herodes era muy aficionado a Juan y le gustaba escuchar su predicación, más por curiosidad y la admiración que por el deseo de la verdad. Juan no quería que esta amistad con Herodes pusiera en peligro
su amor por Dios y por lo que dijo a Herodes y Herodías la pura
verdad de su situación: que estaban viviendo en adulterio y tenían
que separarse si querían dejar de ofender a Dios y evitar la condenación eterna. Herodes estaba perplejo por la enseñanza de Juan porque era un hombre débil. Podríamos imaginar que era el tipo de
persona que sabe qué es lo correcto, pero le falta es el valor moral
de llevarlo a cabo. Herodías, por el contrario, estaba llena de malicia
y odiaba a Juan. Ella lo quería ver muerto a causa de su llamado al
arrepentimiento. Ella lo vio como el enemigo de todos sus deseos,
sobre todo por el poder que viene con ser la esposa legal del tetrarca.
En su odio por Juan, ella se impuso ante Herodes para encarcelarlo.
Herodes a regañadientes mantuvo a Juan en cautiverio y se nos dice
en el Evangelio que incluso siguió escuchando a Juan y compartía
con él. La debilidad moral de Herodes alcanzó su punto más bajo
cuando, lleno de lujuria, después de la actuación de un baile por su
sobrina, Salomé, le prometió lo que ella deseara, incluso hasta la
mitad de su reino. Salomé se reunió con su madre, Herodías, quien
la convenció para pedir la muerte de Juan el Bautista. Y así fue que
ella volvió a Herodes para declarar que su única petición era la cabeza de Juan el Bautista en una bandeja. De esta manera, Juan Bautista
fue decapitado por odio a la ley de Dios sobre la indisolubilidad del
matrimonio. Él es nuestro modelo y nuestro héroe en la lucha contra
este pecado en nuestro tiempo. La Iglesia también es odiada por su
predicación de la ley de Dios sobre la indisolubilidad del matrimonio y de la imposibilidad del "divorcio y el nuevo matrimonio." Se
vuelve a Juan, el amigo de los esposos, el 29 de agosto debemos
aprender de él cómo soportar con alegría al terminar en fidelidad a
su Esposo, Jesucristo.

WEDDINGS/ BODAS
Couples planning to be married must contact a priest
well in advance of the wedding date. They must also
receive personal preparation for entering marriage. If
either party has previously gone through any form of
civil or religious marriage with another person, the
priest is not permitted to set a date for the wedding until the Archbishop office has been consulted. It should be noted that Catholics,
in order to marry validly, must marry before the parish priest or his
delegate and two witnesses. A civil marriage or a marriage before
non-Catholic minister is not a valid marriage. Couples in such
“marriages” should contact a priest to have the situation rectified.
Parejas que estén planeando casarse necesitan ponerse en contacto
con un sacerdote antes de planear el día de la boda. Ellos también
necesitan recibir preparación personal durante su matrimonio. Si
cualquier persona de la pareja a estado casado anteriormente con
