My dear parishioners,
On October 1st, the Catholic Church celebrates
the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, also known as the
Little Flower. St. Therese lived a very short life, born
in the year 1873 and died in the year 1897 at the age of
twenty-four. I first became familiar with St. Therese
when I was discerning my vocation and a priest I respected told me of her. He had a great devotion to her
and so I bought her autobiography, “The Story of a
Soul.” I admit at the age of twenty-two, when I started
reading her life and other stories, I did not get what the
big deal was. She died young, lived in cloistered convent in France and really was not known outside the
convent during her life. In my immature mind, she did
not do anything major. She did not go off into the missions to preach the Gospel, she did not work with the
poor in the slums, she did not die a martyr’s death, she
did not do anything that adventurous in my eyes. I
was missing the point. It was not that she did anything
major in the eyes of the world, but she did small things
with great love. She lived the martyrdom of daily life
and offered everything she could to God. The only
reason we really know anything about her is because
her sister who was also the superior of their convent,
made her to write about her life. Her sister saw something in her that others might not have. In this small
volume, The Story of a Soul, we have a masterpiece of
a young woman who struggled with her faith and her
vocation, but entrusted herself completely to Jesus. In
the last century, millions of people have read this book
and have been inspired to love the Lord more. Her
way is called the Little Way, and one of her great devotees was St. Teresa of Calcutta, who used the concept
of doing small things with great love to amazing effect.
St. Therese’s love for God did not come out of
a vacuum. She grew up in a household, where it was
the desire of all to become saints, to love God and the
Church completely. Her parents, Saints Louis and
Zélie Martin, sought to keep Christ as the center of
their home. St. John Paul II desired that a married couple be canonized to show the world how marriage can
be a way of holiness. St. Therese’s parents were seen
as a model of how to authentically live the Catholic
Christian life. Their cause for canonization was begun
in 1958, picked up steam under St. John Paul II, were
beatified under the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI
in October 2008 (150th anniversary of their marriage)
and then canonized by Pope Francis last October. If
you have not read The Story of a Soul, I recommend
that you do and learn of this great Doctor of the
Church.

El 1ro de octubre la Iglesia Católica celebra la
fiesta de Santa Teresita de Lisiux, también conocida como La Pequeña Flor. Santa Teresita tuvo una vida corta,
nació en 1873 y murió en 1897 a la edad de veinticuatro
años. La primera vez que fui familiarizado con Santa
Teresita fue cuando estaba discerniendo mi vocación al
sacerdocio y un sacerdote que yo respetaba me habló de
ella. El tenia una gran devoción hacia ella así que, compre su autobiografía, “Historia de un Alma.” Tengo que
admitir que a la edad de veintidós años, cuando empecé
a leer su vida y otras historias, yo entendía cual era la
gran cosa. Ella murió muy joven, vivió en un convento
de clausura en Francia y realmente no fue conocida fuera
del convento durante su vida. En mi mente inmadura ella
no había hecho nada grande. Ella no de misión a predicar
el Evangelio, ella no trabajo en los barrios pobres, no
murió como un mártir, ella no había hecho nada aventurado a mi parecer. Yo no entendía su mensaje. No era
que ella hiciera grandes cosas a los ojos del mundo, pero
que ella hizo pequeñas cosas con un gran amor. Ella vivió el martirio de la vida diaria y ofreció todo lo que pudo a Dios. La única razón por la cual sabemos acerca de
ella es porque su hermana quien era la superiora del convento, le pidió que escribiera acerca de su vida. Su hermana vio en ella algo que los demás quizás no veían. En
este pequeño volumen, Historia de un Alma, tenemos la
obra maestra de una joven que lucho con su fe y su vocación, pero se confió completamente a Jesús. En el siglo
pasado, millones de personas leyeron este libro y ha sido
de mucha inspiración para amar al Señor mas. Su forma
se llama el Caminito y una de sus grandes devotas fue
Santa Teresa de Calcuta, quien uso el concepto de hacer
pequeñas cosas con gran amor con un efecto extraordinario.
El amor de Santa Teresita por Dios no salió del
vacío. Ella creció en un hogar, donde el deseo de todos
era de ser santos, amar a Dios y a la Iglesia completamente. Sus padres, Santos Louis y Zélie Martin, buscaron mantener a Cristo como el centro de su hogar. San
Juan Pablo II deseo que una pareja de esposos fueran
canonizados para mostrarle al mundo como el matrimonio puede ser un camino de santidad. Los padres de Santa Teresita fueron vistos como
modelos de una autentica vida Católica Cristiana. La
causa para su canonización comenzó en 1958, se levanto
bajo San Juan Pablo II y fueron beatificados bajo el pontificado de del Papa Benedicto XVI en Octubre de 2008
(en el 150 aniversario de su matrimonio) y después fueron canonizados por el Papa Francisco el pasado octubre.
Si no han leído Historia de un Alma , les recomiendo que
aprendan acerca de esta gran Doctora de la Iglesia.

Blessing of the Animals
The traditional blessing of the animals will
take place today Sunday, October 2nd at 3 pm
in the courtyard in front of the rectory. In case
of bad weather, the blessing will take place in
lower church. You may bring your dogs, cats,
fish, rabbits, snakes, lizards and any pet you
have for the blessing. St. Francis of Assisi,
pray for us.

Parish Poland Pilgrimage
Recently Fr. O’Connor announced a parish pilgrimage to
Poland and the Czech Republic, July 2 – 11, 2017. Flyers
with more information are available at the entrances of the
church, in the rectory and on the parish website. Join us as
we walk in the footsteps of some of the great saints of the
last century, St. John Paul, St. Faustina and St. Maxmillian
Kolbe. Mass will be celebrated each day as we deepen our
faith. Join us as we travel to the land of the Divine Mercy
apparitions.

There will be a special collection to assist victims of natural

Thank you to all who supported the Food Pantry and Outreach Raffle. We sold 129 tickets, raising $2,580.00.
Our Pantry is ready for business as usual at our new home
on 48th Avenue.
We welcome you to stop and check us out. Our Volunteers
are committed to helping in this ministry. We hope to reach
out to families, that are going through some hard times,, by
supplying groceries and other dry goods.
Bridge Women’s Support Center
(Formerly The Bridge to Life)
Bridge Women’s Support Center is a pregnancy resource center with locations in Flushing and Astoria.
They provide pro-life counseling to abortion-minded
women. They also give material assistance (such as
clothing, strollers, car seats, and cribs) to thousands of
mothers and their children each year.
They are sponsoring a baby bottle fundraiser. There will
be bottles at the exit doors during the weekend masses
on October 1st and 2nd. Please take one or more home,
fill it up with donations and return it on the weekend of
October 15th and 16th. Please only take a bottle if you
are sure will be able to return it. Thank you for your
support.

Join the St. Mary’s Children’s Choir!
What better way to serve the church, and our Lord Jesus
Christ, than through the power of music? Register your child
to join our music ministry for FREE. Each practice will take
place in the new music room on Wednesdays at 5pm, after the
3:15 session of Religious Education Classes, and we will be
singing for Family Mass every month at 10am. The new music room is now located near the lower church, downstairs
and to the right from the bathroom. If interested, please pick
up and fill out a choir registration form at the back of the

Bendición de los Animales
La bendición tradicional de los animales se llevará a cabo hoy

Recientemente el Padre O’Connor anunció una peregrinación
parroquial a Polonia y la Republica Checa del 2 al 11 de julio
de 2017. Volantes con más información están disponibles en
las entradas de la iglesia, en la rectoría y en el sitio web.
Únanse a nosotros para seguir los pasos de algunos grandes
santos del siglo pasado. San Juan Pablo, Santa Faustina y San

Centro de Apoyo para Mujeres (Bridge Women’s
Support Center) Antiguamente se llamaba
The Bridge to Life
Es un centro de recursos para mujeres embarazadas con
centros en Flushing y Astoria. Ellos proveen consejería
pro-vida a mujeres que están pensando hacerse un aborto.
Ellos también dan ayuda material como (ropa, coches,
sillas para el carro y cunas para los bebes) a miles de mujeres y a sus niños cada año.
Ellos están patrocinando una campaña de biberones para
recaudar fondos. Los biberones estarán en las puertas de
la iglesia al terminar las Misas el 1 y 2 de octubre. Por
favor lleve una o mas con usted, llénela con donaciones y
devuélvela el fin de semana de octubre 15 y 16.
Por favor tome un biberón solo si esta seguro de que lo va
a devolver. Gracias por su apoyo!
